why small braids? why not big twists+ protective style?. Here is my favorite short style for protection.watch?v=9w6rLOYUwCA&list=PL37FADA845E85F289&index=105
you could go to a professional braider and ask them to only braid your real hair w/ out adding extra to it. im a slow braider as well so this is what works best for me. the only drawback is that you have to continually remind them to not braid sooooo tight....hope this helps;)
I've had one too many bad experiences with stylists... they seem to hate natural hair because it's more work and hey.... time is money.... so they just rip their way through my hair and insist on heat styling to tame my hair! My last braiding experience was about a year ago... I've decided I will be my stylist going forward... nobody is going to take the time required to lovingly navigate through my strands!

I understand how you feel about how time consuming twists can be but it's worth it. I refuse to do mini twists, I do index finger size twists only LOL. Just think twisting your hair one time can last up to three weeks then wear a twistout for another week then start over.
