It's amazing how far animation and other things have come. We don't really notice it, but everything is rapidly changing; anime that we watch now will probably resemble this in 50 or so years
they say that the current style of anime originated in gekiga (realistic manga) that originated in the late 1960s and kamishibai (traditional japanese narrative art) that originated in the 12th (?) century. if you have never seen kamishibai, check out "What Is Kamishibai?" on my channel.
The first anime was "Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki" which came out in 1917. As for manga, the first manga was "Eshinbun Nipponchi" which came out in 1874. Just thought I would let you know. :)
"Imokawa Mukuzō Genkanban no Maki" is the first professional Japanese animation film ever made. It was made by Ōten Shimokawa in 1917. Because there are no films or photographs left now, exact contents or animation techniques are unknown.
what i read its that the first cartoon in the world was created in china in 1912 but they stopped doing cartoons and japan made their first anime in 1917, i dont know if i right or wrong.....
anime is just simply animation in japan. i could draw nickdean style in japan and it still is anime. there is no difference. only thing different is the japanese art style. not all artists draw the same either. compare Tezuka to Inoue and you'll see what i mean.
The music sounds like it was added in after wards. Which makes sense since this anime looks like it was made during the silent film age for Japan. And considering that the oldest anime was made in 1917, Namakura Gatana. This anime looks like it was made a little after, so I think the date may be right.
This might actually be the first anime clip ever, I was bored today so I did some research on the history of anime and it said that the first anime was about 2 minutes long and was about a samurai testing the abilities of his new sword (of course this was wikipedia so not very reliable) and I guess this might relate to that some how. But the only thing thats wierd is that it said the oldest anime was made in 1917 and your saying this was made in 1928...... could you have gotten the wrong year?
@examae15 Not the first piece of animation, that would be Emile Chole's Phantasmagorie from 1902. However, this does look to be original. I wouldn't consider it anime or manga in the traditional sense; that brand of animated stems from the likes of Osuma Tezuka, and is influenced by the artistic psyche of post WWII japan (Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, etc.) This is a good find though, really good animation quality for the time period.
tezuka osamu lost popularity in the late 60s because of gekiga. the style of current anime originated in gekiga (realistic manga) that originated in the late 60s and kamishibai (japanese traditional paper drama) that originated in the 12th (?) century.
the first anime was made in 1917 so no sorry this isn't the first :) courtesy of wikipedia
