I have a question for the second problem: as x = 6 - 3y, if I plugged the value of x into the first equation, I would get

6 - 3y + 3y = 6 which simplifies to 6 = 6. Doesn't that mean that the two lines are the same and have infinite solutions?

Drawing lines helps lots. I didn't get it until you started drawing lines in the second problem and then I was like, "Derp, this makes perfect sense". Most people are visual learners, so drawing lines helps them to rationalize the relationship between numbers.
