  • This version has a real magic to it, beautiful.

  • I used this song to break into secret Drax labs! No joke.

  • How can I get this on my iPod?

  • I think this 7 inch single came with my full Soundtrack recording.

  • Awesome post!

  • Ahhh got a funky beat

  • WONDERFUL !!

  • 1977-1985 on WRKR (The Rocker) in Racine, WI..

  • omg my mum has this version i heard when i was about 11

  • Awwwwwww yeah! WFIL in Philly used to dog this song out, taking me back.

  • FANTASTIC

  • feel like a pimp w this joint.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!! I remember my older brothers got this 45 when we bought the LP Soundtrack!! I was 8 when the movie came out, last year in Chicago before moving to San Diego. Brings back some great memories of a happy time :)

  • Wow, I just can't stop listening to this. This is a master piece. A very slept on master piece. I liked the Meco Version and the original, but this version was the best of the best

  • @mrpower328 I made a list of movie soundtracks released on 45s in mypsace this was in it it was in the film music club in myspace all the clubs are temporarily shut off

  • I sampled this beat for a hip hop group.

  • I so remember this,very cool.

  • I loved this song so much, wore out the 45 just like this one!

  • awesome

  • Great song. Hearing it always reminds me of the major snowstorm we had in Louisville in January of 1978.

  • If you mean the whole soundtrack album, yes. It has been released four different times. The first one was an Arista Records CD.The second a Varese Srabande release including the song you hear in this video. The third was on Collectors Edition released in the 90s and the 4th one was an exclusive release by Walmart when all 3 versions of the movie were released in both DVD and Blue Ray. MECO produced his own disco version and so did Gene Page and others.

  • Boy... that sure brings back memories! I remember owning this!

  • nice i love this theme im using it for my science project XD

  • yes, it's not MECO - It's a special track on the lesser known Close Encounters soundtrack by the Electric Moog Orchestra. That's the one I owned and have searched for this track for a while.

    Thanks

  • does it sound like captain from & tennille?

  • it's not MECO it's whom?

  • It's" Close Encounters Of THE Third Kind", not "Of A Third Kind".

  • Music like this is what shaped me to be the musician I am today!!!

  • Not much today that gets your toes tapping....

  • NO kiddies u be wrong...THIS IS JOHN WILLIAMS VERSION...HE was a lil ticked off that MECO made a ton of money off his theme, of star wars...SOOOOOOO he did this..on the "B" was Nocturnal Pursuit.

  • @strathacker Yes please!!! how can I get it??? =)

  • :D James Bond - Moonraker Doorcode melody xD

  • This is by The Captain

  • I've been searching for this for a long time

  • I wanna hear the other side. I used to have this same 45

  • I'm with those who feel this is the best version of this song. I also have the 45 with picture sleeve, and it's in really good condition. Good cartridge+good turntable = great sound - for decades if you take care of them. I love the authentic synthesizer sounds in this tune. It leads me to believe that the producers worked directly with the sound designers of the movie, namely Phillip Dodds, the one who plays the big ARP 2500 system in the movie. They were probably given the sound charts. 5 *'s

  • freaking awesome, i'm totally digging this

  • I think it's a group called MECO, they did Star Wars theme too. I used to burn this 45 up when I was a kid after I'd seen the movie! Great post, Thanks

  • @williamkball Its Daryl Dragon, aka The Captain

  • @williamkball just type in Daryl Dragon close encounters and there's the vid of him performing it on 'freaky synths' in the desert

  • @williamkball I had more than one copy of this record because I wore the others out! Good stuff!

  • @vintagekiddiedisc this was a bonus 45 with the soundtrack LP

  • @williamkball

No, it's not by MECO, it was recorded by the great master John Williams himself. At that time it was very popular to promote movies with disco-versions of the main theme. So John Williams felt to do so as well. This is the result and it was released as a bonus 45'' single togehther with the album. Later it was released in best digital quality on an older issue of the original soundtrack as a bonus track. For God's sake I bought it as it is not available anymore for many years.

  • @williamkball This is not Meco, but John Williams. As stated by someone else before, this 45 RPM came as a bonus in the original vinyl album released in 1977.I know because I bought that year and stll got it.

  • @williamkball Believe it or not, this was actually from John Williams himself! He was clearly influenced by Meco Monardo's (Meco) success with the Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band (disco) theme. Meco did come out with his own version of music from CE3K also.

  • @williamkball If you are talking about this video, it's not MECO. Although I liked the MECO Star Wars, the MECO Close Encounters sucked compared to this one by John Williams.

  • @williamkball

It's not Meco, but it does sound like them. Meco had their own version of the Close Encounters song (findable here on YouTube). This production is credited only to John Williams. Who knows, he could have commissioned some of Meco to actually play some of it, but I don't know. Meco was certainly "the thing" then, and Williams must have just been tipping his hat to them, as they have been to him. Meco sure had a lot though, from Star Wars to Oz.

  • @williamkball Actually, Meco Monardo (Meco), who was most famous for his Star Wars disco record, did release a record for Close Encounters. This however isn't it. Believe it or not, the composer himself, John Williams recorded this record. I think he was enspired my Meco to release a pop record.

  • @williamkball This is definitely NOT the Meco version. I have the Meco album in question (Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk). It is in a similar vein, but this version is better, IMO.

  • @williamkball This is actually a single that was included as a bonus with the original soundtrack album in 1977. MECO did record a version of the song, however, on an album called "Encounters of Every Kind".

  • I don't know what it is about this music but it had me mesmorized.I use to check out the cd many years ago so that I could play it over and over again,ha I got youtube.I can now hit it as my favorite and play it over and over and over

  • Awesome! Thanks for posting!

  • OMFG.. I have been looking for this song for 30 years.. I had the 45 and it was smashed... Thank you so much!!

  • "this is the best version"

  • Was absolutely obsessed with this movie when I was a teen. Williams is still the greatest film composer ever to come along.

  • @dillmanbradford

Same here, but I was only 9. It hasn't lost much of its potency over the years either. After seeing it as a kid, I didn't see the night sky the same ever again. I'll never forget the first wide shot of Devil's Tower just before the last encounter, with the clear starscape. I could almost feel the night air in the theater.

It opened another pane of in my window of imagination. I found it hard to relate to kids who weren't as moved. "What do you mean it was just OKAY?"

  • @TheJediCharles re: "What do you mean it was just OKAY?"

    It was an experience.

  • @TheJediCharles Same case here, I can repeat each your word, thanks for this gem :-)

  • I finally found the right version of this! This was the same record I had in 6th grade. My first exposure to electronic/synthesized music.

  • This is very powerful, good stuff. Thanx.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG (smiling), you made my day with this one friend. Music in the 70's was and still is the soundtrack to everyday life. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY !!!

  • I have a memory with this SP Record.

  • I had this Record when I was a little kid.

I am sorry I have lost this piece of my memory.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind !!

  • Big hit in the 70's, along with the Star was theme song - for about 2 weeks.

  • Sounds so good from 2:15 on!

  • I'm starting to feel the vibe of Dave Grusin, because of the of the funky beats and mixes

  • how can you not groove to this?

  • I uploaded the digital remastered version. search for

Original Theme from CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (Disco 45") HIGH QUALITY

    (just use copy and paste)

  • yes, this version was released on a Cd.

There was a re-issue between the original release and the collectors edition.

And THAT interim version has this disco version in perfect remastered sound on it. I have it at home :-)

    oh, wait a moment...

i just grabbed it out of my shelf.

It was released on VARÉSE SARABANDE records, CD no VSD-5275, released in 1990.

its track 11, so its sort of bonus as the original cut only featured 10 tracks.

  • @Starglance Was it the Close encounters of the third kind CD?

  • @LaMona1965

yes it was an alternate version of the original soundtrack.

  • @Starglance Varese Sarabande released a lot of great CD's in the 90's, but I don't think they're still in business, which is a shame. They were as good as the Rhino, Collectables & Sundazed reissue labels.

  • @tamspeci

    they are STILL in business:

    varesesarabande

    com

  • @Starglance

i dont think there cd is in print anymore.

  • This is the best version of this song to date. It was also used on the price is right from 78 to 92 for some showcases

  • @glennon67 they should bring back the Time Capsule Showcase on TPIR!! and Use this music as the cue ... that again ... the only people who got to do those showcases were the late Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy i believe!! I think it's time they let Rich Fields do a "Time Capsule" showcase with this music lol

  • @Fieldsfangirl28 That's Great but not Rich Fields, he left so JD Roberto, Brad Sherwood or Jeff Davis can do it along with Space Wars by Clark Gault or the theme from Star Trek.

  • Waoh!

At last I find this, great!

I've wanted to hear this theme for 35 years.

Does anyone know this theme on CD(digital remastered sound)?

    I want to hear indeed!

    Someone tell me the way,please!

  • @AANASUN

I'd love to hear that too.

  • If you can find it, look up Star Tracks, it's a collection of the Cincinnati Pops' greatest hits, that's where I first heard the theme.

  • @AANASUN accually yes with an extra drumbeat at the beginning before the "bass" comes in.

  • I can get you a better condition copy. I remember this 45 when I was a wee small child. I also remember the album with the bonus one sided single in it. I got me another copy for one dollar with single at a used record store, found this on 8 track tape, plus POST UP THE B-SIDE if you wanna have fun. Funny.
