This is the first time in a long time that I have felt sorry for King Henry the Eigth. He truly loves Brandon...and he's truly delusional enough to think that he can save him.
all he had to do was take his horse over to the nearest pharmacy and get him some antibiotics. There, problem solved. But no, he had to take the whole "by the grace of god" approach....
Stop making fun of this! What we see is love. The love of two best friends. The love Henry bore Charles. We might find it ridiculous that he commanded Charles to be healed, but in this time, they maybe believed in it. Maybe not. Maybe, it was just a denial of the truth. Henry mourned his friend, Brigitte mourned her love and Edward Brandon mourned his father. What we see is sorrow and love. You guys shouldn't make fun of it.
Hertford, later the Duke of Somerset, by all intentsand purposes was an absolute shit. It's a shame he would be my 14xgreat grandfather - BEHEADED. Duke of Buckingham (episode 2, series 1) would have been a 15xgreat grandfather - BEHEADED, Thomas 13th Lord Dacre - HANGED, Sir Henry Norrys - BEHEADED - or direct great grandfathers and all met grisly ends. Good thing they had already shot their bolts at my respective grandmothers otherwise I wouldn't be here typing this ...
This scene wa perfectly shot, with Henry VIII claiming he had the power to heal Charles. He really did believe that he was more than human; that he really had that power. They purposely showed Charles dying right afterward to show that king or no king, Henry was a human being, and the only thing that made him powerful was his position. I guess you could say it was a real "Haha" in Henry's face.
Henry Cavill's acting through all the 4th season is really overwhelming. With a performance so calm, quiet, austere but so internal and full of emotion, he managed something remarcable: He outshined every other actor in the series, including JRM himself. And JRM is a really powerful actor... The more Henry Cavill matures, the gratest actor he becomes. And for such a gorgeus man to be also a great actor... that comes once in every 50 years or so... Expecting great things from you, Henry!! <33
In reality Charles outlives Henry for a long time but for some reason having one without the other is just not interesting. This however is a good representation of their friendship.
I cried at this scene, JRH and Henry Cavill played their parts so well, it's so tragic, King Henry saw himself as having the power of God, and believed because he absolutely wanted it he could heal Charles and all would be well again!
@enteecee Historically, Henry outlived Charles Brandon... And yes, Charles married Catherine Willoughby who was initally engaged to his son. In the Tudors series, they are still legally married but living apart. The French lady, Brigitte, is a fictional character.
@connahharvey21 Indeed but he felt devastated after it, there is a scene after that where he is mourning her. And after that, he became more responsible towards matters of love.
I like this scene so much... but it's so sad and very emotionally powerfull.
I love Henry's reaction. It's a mix between madness and truely sadness to this part. He want to save his friend but he can't. But i think before this moment, he want believe he has power... just for this time, for save his best and only true friend.

I honestly am so overwelmed by the comments I am reading, about the mistress, how some of you feel bad for her, and saying that the wife was mean, Let me remind you guys that in this series Charles Brandon was a Womanizer and he fucked almost anything that had a hole!, he never was faithful to any of his wifes, and you guys just think it is so bad that a wife is not understanding about her own husband taking a mistress, do you think she should just role over like a dog, HELL NO!! what would u do
Frankly, I think it takes a certain kind of gaul for a mistress to walk up to the widow of the man she was sleeping with and address her. It's amazing she was at his wake. Even today it would be in poor taste imo irregardless of the mistresses 'feelings'. She certainly did not seem to think of the wife's when she willingly became Brandon's mistress.

Does soemthing massive happen between Charles and his wife for her to hate him this series? I mean he was a right bastard in series 3 with hanging the women and children of the rebellion, plus being behind Cromwell's demise...it's always the women that get a bad name, yet they were manipulated by their own family, the only way to get ahead in the King's graces was to put a daughter in his bed and subsequently on his throne.
@cookiemonster2482 Uh...yeah. I think you answered your own question. Catherine couldn't stomach the fact that Charles had butchered innocent women and children at Henry's command and felt sick at the thought of sharing any intimacies with him from that point. She couldn't divorce him, of course, given the times, but she did everything she could to distance herself from him.
@thehistoryfreak13 Mean or no Charles was cheating on his wife from the get go. It's hard to stay in love with a man who is so disrespectful towards you and his vows.
lol .. i love how henry says "i command u to be healed " @ 5.48 and then the next scnece shows that brandon is dead. Well u definately healed him, king Henry lol hahaah..
people hate his wife because she was mean to his mistress, but who would want to be polite with a woman who's having sex with your husband, she has every right. Most people would say well she deserved to have Charles take another woman, but if the situation was reversed and she slept with another man she would most likely be beheaded.
i hate charle's wife what a uncompassionate bitch smh poor brigette was completly heartbroken and it looked as if she felt like she didn't belong there and was just pushed away even though she truley deeply cared for him. smh
Following Charles Brandon's death in 1545, it was rumoured that King Henry had considered marrying Catherine as his seventh wife, despite being married to her friend Catherine.
An outspoken adherent of the reformed Protestant religion, she fled abroad to Wesel and later Poland during the reign of Queen Mary I, to avoid persecution
Catherine Willoughby, Duchess of Suffolk, suo jure 12th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby (22 March 1519/1520[1][2] - 19 September 1580), was an English noblewoman living at the royal courts of King Henry VIII, King Edward VI and later, Queen Elizabeth I. She was the fourth wife of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, who acted as her legal guardian during his third marriage to Mary Tudor, the younger sister of Henry VIII.

@SpecialPrincess13 Maybe his wife turned mean because she couldn't deal with the slaughter he presided over. It's tough not to be mean too when your husband has an 'official' mistress at court in your place.
@SpecialPrincess13 You think his wife was mean, wow!!!, I am pretty sure if you got sick and tired of you husband fooling around I don't think you would be so understanding! come on!.
its about time charles dies. i personally kinda like it when one of henry's friends die. is like charles was a total jackass in season 2 and 3... its like he only served the king because he was a freakin king probably sense his wife was heartbroken in the series by his harsh actions. especially when he just sat back and allowed henry to kill his wives.. what a douche
@Belindagirl13 it was VERY hard to go against the king back then, though. They didn't really have laws that protected the citizens from the king's wrath back then. If Charles did anything he probably would have been executed. Back then, people were taught to have a strong survival instinct, because one false move and you could have ended up on the scaffold. Especially if you were apart of the court and close to the king. Charles did what he had to do, poor bloke.
@Belindagirl13 Perhaps you have issues understanding how the world works in that time, but it's not like Charles had any way of stopping Henry killing his wives. Henry was the King, you either live by his rules or you die. The world is different and much harsher than the world we live in now, stop judging people in that time with the same rules of law that we have now. It's a different world then.
@BetaArtemis or perhaps u dont know what an important life is? i know very well how the world was then an it stil continues till this day. bosses may not chop heads off there workers but thhey still do harm emotionally. charles could have been like thomas more. i dunno but king henrys friends just looked like pathetic puppets to me . to many innocent people ddied by charles hands and im so sorry that im the only one in this commentry who sees that
I hated Charles Brandon and thought he was a pathetic excuse for a man; but I wish Catherine could have shown some compassion for Brigette. It was her husband who was the bastard not Brigitte who tried to be kind to Catherine.
@LyricalXilence seriously, listen to what you are saying. if someone were to cheat on you with some woman or man, would you embrace him/her? no, i didn't think so. plus, brigitte KNEW what she was getting into when she became brandon's mistress. it's not like all of sudden she realized, "oh my god, you're married!"
Urgh. I can't stand Charles' wife.. I never really could. The way she looked at Charles' mistress like she had never heard of such a thing as an older man, when his wife no longer comes to his bed, to take a mistress. She - his mistress - was kind to him and loving in the time they where together. That was just my opinion.
@TheVampireLover1901 how did you expect his wife to act? She was being cheated on by Brigette with Charles. I don't understand how you people can feel sorry for mistresses.
@TheVampireLover1901 Don't forget, Charles was constantly unfaithful to his very young wife - only 15 when he married her. She was probably afraid of catching something from him, he was such a slut! He was unfaithful to all his wives
@cupidxxrawr what about the part when Henry said, i command you to be healed. when he was doing it to the peasant folk, it looked kind of awesome. but when he did it to charles and in the next two scenes, we see charles dead with his eyes wide open. i seriouly LMAO! :)
@angelmarsall1 He was the Head of the Church of England and 'Defender of the Faith' (a title given to him by the Pope). Also as the Holy Annointed King all English Monarchs are annointed and hailed as God's Representative on Earth. The 'King's Touch' was a medieval tradition that Kings could heal by touch. So the producers here are just playing on historical fact and merging it with the screenplay here.
mascaragirl818 thank you very much i think all tudor fans are having an emotional day here.i only cried two times during the show one time is now and the other was the last episode of season 2 when anne was executed

@LyricalXilence Shown some compassion? She should have slapped that whore and had her drug hair first from the house!! Whore deserve no respect!!

Urgh. I can't stand Charles' wife.. I never really could. The way she looked at Charles' mistress like she had never heard of such a thing as an older man, when his wife no longer comes to his bed, to take a mistress. She - his mistress - was kind to him and loving in the time they where together. That was just my opinion.

@TheVampireLover1901
Is it not so that his official wife refused to have sex with him? I think that is why the Duke and the Duchess became "estranged."
Kenta19191919 1 year ago
@TheVampireLover1901 how did you expect his wife to act? She was being cheated on by Brigette with Charles. I don't understand how you people can feel sorry for mistresses.

@mzmissa You don't understand how people can feel sorry for a woman who lost someone she loved?

@mzmissa Well put.
faeryquene 11 months ago
@mzmissa that is not the point. Their relationship was already broken even before Brigitte's arrival in Brandon's life.
SognatoreDiStelle 10 months ago
@TheVampireLover1901 Don't forget, Charles was constantly unfaithful to his very young wife - only 15 when he married her. She was probably afraid of catching something from him, he was such a slut! He was unfaithful to all his wives

I was so sad during this part, but i had to laugh at Henry's 'You cannot die, I forbid it' part.

@cupidxxrawr what about the part when Henry said, i command you to be healed. when he was doing it to the peasant folk, it looked kind of awesome. but when he did it to charles and in the next two scenes, we see charles dead with his eyes wide open. i seriouly LMAO! :)

@cupidxxrawr i actually cried more when he said that >_>. it was such a nice thing to say T_T

@cupidxxrawr he had such a confidence on his power he actually believed that he was the head of church and had divine power from god...
angelmarsall1 9 months ago
@angelmarsall1 He was the Head of the Church of England and 'Defender of the Faith' (a title given to him by the Pope). Also as the Holy Annointed King all English Monarchs are annointed and hailed as God's Representative on Earth. The 'King's Touch' was a medieval tradition that Kings could heal by touch. So the producers here are just playing on historical fact and merging it with the screenplay here.
