A child, in order to be able to come into their own, as an independent sentient individual, as callus and as savage as it may sound, the parents, must, and inevitably do pass on. As a species, for us to further evolve, in our minds, God Must Die, as that is from where he was originated. We must finally ween ourselves off this crutch of ignorance, and revel in our abilities as mere microbes, in this infinitely vast Multiverse, and indeed in the beauty of just the one Universe we can discern.
I am deeply, DEEPLY offended as a free-thinker by Dinesh's comment that "we don't believe because we don't want their morality to get in our way." How dare he say such slander. This is no different to him saying "... NUH-UH, YOU'RE JUST CLOSED-MINDED HAHA I WIN!". Ludicrous. My disbelief in the supernatural is rooted firmly in their being no sound reason to believe that any of it is true. I don't feel "better for not believing", I feel better for having reason to accept my views as valid.
@vincentk99143 I want to love it ---(where-ever you got it) except "religion sounds dandy"? ---you must have copied. At least I am giving you the benefit of this doubt in an otherwise clean octalog (8). Am I right? Yes? No? It's ok, so, the Q: Why do I say this? A: Because who-ever this is from and it well may BE you, it seems (out of place) as all the others are sound/cute, yet would you not agree about sentence I mentioned. Seems awkward. LeMarc
"No one is forced to convert to islam"? What about every single child of muslim parents that has ever lived, who has been told, from the moment they could understand the words, that the sentence for apostasy is death. That their religion has been decided for them and that if they are anything other than a muslim they should be killed. How is that not forced religion?
So Dinesh thinks morality involves commandments that one has to follow? That's not morality. He clearly doesn't understand what morality is. I wish Hitchens would have said something about that.
i would have to say that anyone claiming dinesh to be an "idiot," is convoluted at best, he is a truly impressive debate expert...but this debate just goes to show you that Hitchens operates on a completely different plane than even the most elite, well read, sourced, and academically gifted. He is a true inspiration and his works will echo on the walls of eternity. With love and great humility i say thank you for your contribution is goes neither unnoticed or unappreciated.
@AylaPersephone he's not strictly anti-abortion, he recognizes what a complex issue it is, and that the decision should be left to the relevant parties, and that those parties should be well informed and taking their situation very seriously.
@guitar789 Actually, that's the current North American standard for debate. Look up American or Canadian Parliamentary debate, and you'll see that the first speaker always gets the last word.
@guitar789 Wikipedia American_Parliamentary_Debate_Association and National_Parliamentary_Debate_Association. See 'Flow of the round' and 'Rules of NPDA Debate', where the Prime Minister or Proposition speak both first and last. Same goes for Canadian Parliamentary.
@OrrWilson Ok I read something about the prime minister and 2 teams consiting of two people, where the proposition starts and ends. Not sure if it can be applied to this non political debate though. But if this guy in the video is referring to debate standards, then you are right. Just sounded to me like he made this up, also see christophers reaction being upset and souza cocky appearance at this moment. Also hear the laughter of the audience.
Fellow atheists, Dinesh is not an idiot, and claiming that he is certainly does not help your case. The greater stance is to realize that very intelligent, rational individuals such as Dinesh can be genuine theists. What does this say about theism? It means that the views held by theists can be adapted to withstand the obvious truths about reality. That in some weird way, they can be compatible. Dinesh has developed false assumptions of the world before applying his rational mind.
"No one is forced to convert to islam"? That their religion has been decided for them and that if they are anything other than a muslim they should be killed. How is that not forced religion?
@kairobinson Same goes for xtians too, children tend to follow their parent's religion until they decide to change. Also this apostasy you talk about is not entire true. I know tons of muslims who renounced islam for personal beliefs and never got harassed for it(I got aunts, uncles, friends) and thus far I see no death warrant hanging over their head. The apostasy thing came way after the death of the prophet by a certain caliph. agreed some arab countries are guilty of this in this day and age
And I dare say Dinesh made fine points in this debate and so did Hitchens but no all the comments I've heard so far is Dinesh is a fool,a bastard, idiot,a liar this and that. I don't entirely believe what he said but for the most part Chris's argument doesn't have proof as well..the situation is 50/50..could be there is no god, could be there is really a GOD. I do believe in a higher power at least..why the fuck am I here for then??lol
Dinesh pulled the same old tricks out of his ass as every creationist. He even hinted upon pascal's wager somewhere in this debate. What a piece of trash argument. It has been debunked so many times by so many people. I'm glad Hitchens went out of his way to make a different argument about it than is traditionally posed because I can't stand to hear people rejecting the same solid arguments time and time again.
@TumshieX I think it is inprobable that religious ppl would respect an atheist because he makes sense when he bashes religion. I just can't imagine them saying in their head....yah this guy is actually making sense, but fuck it, he's wrong ! The moment they think that they are subject to doubt their fate. What I suspect happens in their mind is more like: Bla bla bla...shut up damn it I wanna hear Dinesh speak !

No compulsion in religion under Islam, eh? With the alternative being a death sentence, enforcing Islam in countries with Sharia is something even D'Souza might manage. As for mounting an even vaguely solid challenge to Hitchens, he's way out of his league.
