The fact that its an suv is where you went wrong. Real 4x4's are trucks. 2.2L diesel? Try 7.3L Powerstroke diesel next time. Leave the kiddie ride at home.
This typifies the credit generation. "i want a 4x4" so they go and spunk a few grand on a Freeloader. Why not buy a real 4 wheel drive like a Series Land Rover instead. Oh yeay, you want heaters, soft seats, wind and rain protection. Off road ability doesn't come into it. In this year's heavy snow it took me 5 days to NEED to select 4wd. It's all about ability and perceived need for the vehicle to do the job.
I'm a big LR fan, and I'm sorry, but technically, the Freelander is much better than Defender or an older Discovery. They'll be better off road, at towing, less to go wrong, but in every other way, the Freelander is much better. The 2.2 diesel is a pretty strong and economical engine, it drives and handles nicely, it is comfy and decently equipped, and is spacious enough. It also IS "tough enough" to do off-roading and was many types of awesome in the snow we had last year.
@cl998 Here's the thing. 4wd is great on a level surface, but due to the independent suspension, and no chance to lock the drive front to rear (like in a Series or a Defender/RR Classic/Disco 1 with centre diff lock) as soon as it bellies out, drive is lost. There's no ground clearance, RBO angles are compromised by the long wheelbase, overhangs front and rear mean attack and depart angles are also compromised, couple all this with the road biased tyres, and the owner not reading the manual yet.
I can't argue with that (hey, there's a first for everything in Youtube comments, righ!? ;-)), but the Freelander is MEANT to be "softroader" for the sort of Honda CRV/Toyota RAV4/BMW X3ish kinda market, i.e the as you said, "I want a 4x4" lot, who don't actually NEED the abilities of a Defender or a Jeep or whatever, but it is better at the rough stuff than its criteria needs it to be.
The new 2WD Evoque, and the recent 2WD Freelanders, that's another matter entirely though...:(
@alphadogs1 Rovers are very capable r in snow and rock terrain...if this idiot kept his tires to the ground......now if the Ford was raised, no problem getting stuck....don't think a raise Rover would look good though
@alphadogs1 i don't know about that saying, my brother has a chevy trailblazer and the only time we got stucked on the snow was when the snow got to the hight of the hood, he had ford trucks before and plenty of times we couldn't get out of where we were parked on the street having cleaned the whole truck around
land rovers suck, specially that freelander might as well drive a honda civic in that snow. theyr nothing but head gasket oil leaking overpriced lazyboy reclinable chairs on wheels.
@shizlnit have you never heard of a little place called England. and the 4x4 is working,,, its just a terrible 4x4 system so sometimes all 4 tires dont spin. YOU ARE A DUMBASS
@shizlnit no im not from england, i just find it amazing that you couldn't realize that is where this was filmed. and if you cant understand what i am typing then read it twice. i know its hard for you to string two points together at once.
Getting (nearly) stuck is an INTEGRAL part of the 4x4 life experience!!!! If "not getting stuck" is why you are buying a 4x4 then this may be all nice and sweet but you could have a lot more fun. How often have you gone a road or path just to see how far you could go? It is really fun doing it, but getting (almost?) stuck is part of the fun. You don't even need 4x4 to enjoy that, I once was in Australia and we went unsealed rough roads with our regular (front wheel) car. Cool bananas :)
Land Rover build both vehicals. 'Land Rover' Defender is a rough and ready, all round, all weather, farmers field, rock hopping, sheep carrying and holds no luxury. The 'Land Rover' Discovery dose the same job as the Defender but has a more luxury status [Electric Windows, Pile Carpet, Front facing 5 seats]. The 'Land Rover' Range Rover is the most luxurious [Leather Seats, Electric Windows, Air Suspension]. All have off road capability.
@defender5151 And the you've missed out the Freelander (the one in this vid) which is still 4 wheel drive, but doesn't have the hi/lo option. Freelander was launched to capture the market that was buying Rav-4 and similar
Get a grip you boring git. "Show off" ... have a laugh more like. Good man. Life is for living. He's not the only one who does 4x4 off road driving ... and certainly not the first, nor last, to get stuck!!
Wow... That's all I have to say. He should have checked it out before he just drove over it. For a small SUV, the Freelander is fairly capable but this is so totally operator error.
Needs proper Mud & Snow tyres for better grip and the suspension lifting for the clearance, cos as it is here, it's not a true off-roader, more of a soft-roader that doesn't like small bumps like that mound, it's predecessor could easily scale that and thensome... :)
It's even worse around here in the winter with people in H2s and H3s. They think they can do anything and get stuck and some guy in a beat up 80s jeep comes and pulls them out. But you can have all the four wheel drive and diff lockers and off road tires in the world, if you high-center yourself, your screwed however you look at it. I know i've done it. We thought we were driving on ice in my buddies durango, we werent lol
There's nothing to say that this guy is an idiot OR a show off. People who have 4x4's are the type of people who like to push their vehicles to the limit. This is just an example of that. It's also easy to misjudge a surface when it's covered in snow.
