@zshadows Thats what happens when a turbo blows. The compressor-side seal of the damaged turbocharger is breached, so the engine can continue to run on the oil that leaks out. Only way to shut it down is to overload the engine, or block the intake.
Can't shut it off, its Runaway Diesel. Either kill it in a high gear, dump the clutch with the brake on, or spray CO2 extinguisher into the air intake.
saw this happen on the grapevine (southbound) and the smoke ignited sending flames 30 feet in the air , the driver finaly pulled over and flames were blowing over the trailer while the engine idled, I pulled up by him and told him to shut it down!
If only the seal on the exhust side fails then oil will not get back into the engine.
@496velle I heard rumor, though I can be wrong... That when it does that, the oil becomes fuel for the engine when the seals break or something in the turbo.
So seals break, turbos pushing air/oil into the engine through intake manifold, it causes an ignition, exhaust is expelled, spins the turbo, the turbo continues to feed oil into the intake manifold and it repeats...
I bet you anything there was a big pile of oil underneath his truck prolly spilt every drop to the ground. I had the turbo go up with my KW w900l the other day and it leaked every drop of oil. It sucked
@rokindalanche1 Umm, highly doubtful. He may have left it running. See my channel. One vid, and a link to another. Drivers leaving the vehicle on. TURN IT OFF! Geesh.
looks like coolant in the cylinders to me, a blown head gasket or cracked head. a blown turbo is either extremely messy with oil all over the place and black smoke lol, or no mess, no smoke, you'll just be driving 35mph empty... lol.
@cw9tv you tend to see more blue smoke when turbos blow our, i know when my seals when out it was a friggen mess. coated my whole exhaust system in oil that i burned off for months.
so they smoke when they blow the turbo? there was a tri-axle dump that was smokin even worse than that one time on our way to church, the engine was barely runnin
Not so. I used to be a glass hauler. Blew the turbo in my ISM powered Century class just a couple miles from Wytheville, VA on I-77 coming out of WV. Not much smoke somehow, though the intercooler was thoroughly gummed up with oil. Took a day to get someone to relay my load, and another week stuck in a Cummins dealer break room. Though you know what, I think I was pulling a van load. Chicken wire or something. Still not garbage. ;)
Looks like engine runaway.

At least that's how I learned it happened.

@496velle I'm sorry what I was getting at is that it can't be turned off due to the engine being fed oil.
