When words turn up suggesting the decline and imminent end of RV's singing career, the ever-faithful internet is always there to prove them wrong. In June 2009, I came across similar words and, a week later, the internet was flooded with rave reviews and superlatives about RV's performance in BALLO at Covent Garden. The other day, I came across similar words and the internet proved them wrong again.Browsing around, I found YT videos of RV singing in Atilla taken by user camilla0690 from
@danbar73 ..from back of MET upper balcony, and RV sounded very solid. From his Werther in Vienna few weeks later, I found YT video of the aria from user dolchev, another very solid job. From user BayerischeStaatsoper, there is Trailer of MEDEA IN CORINTO showing a glimpse of RV's blazing, heroic salutation.Between perfs of MEDEA, RV sprinted to Vienna to sing 2 arias at a gala;very solid indeed as shown on YT videos from user Gobrias. From web critic Intermezzo:"Vargas was simply the best D Carlo.."
@danbar73 "Vargas was simply the best Don Carlo I've ever heard live, effortlessly Italianate. When he finished he sounded fresh enough to sing another one".(Review of RV's DC this week). That says a ton from someone who must have seen all these hot studs in the role over the years. RV does not have to "touch" anyone to prove anything. He was nicknamed The Untouchable by fans and critics from early 90's;declared by German music magazine Best Tenor from 1995 &thereafter. RV is still Untchbl&Best Tnr
Even if the voice is not as beautiful as it was by the past, Vargas is the number one today. What a great artist and singer. So into the music and character.
No way! Vargas can't touch Juan Diego Florez or Piotr Beczala. If you thing this is good from Vargas, then you should hear him now. I've seen him twice this season @ the Met (Faust & Attila) and I could barely hear him sitting close to the stage in orchestra.
@whatsreallyhoodbitch Opera is not only about the volume... you need to learn what are those things that makes a great singer ... a lot of people thinks that a tenor who reaches very high notes is a great tenor ... i can tell you that there are several thingss that a singer needs to worry instead of the high notes or the volume...
@Mrrsz1 I know that Mrrsz1, you're not talking to a novice. It's a waste of time and money to go to a performance and you can't hear the singer, what's the point? And why are you talking about "great?" I didn't mention anything about anyone being "great."
@whatsreallyhoodbitch in that im agree with you.. but you said that Vargas cant touch JDF or Bezcala ... each one of them is a different kind of voice .. each one of them has different habilitties... certainly Ramon has not a very powerful voice, but he has losts of things that few tenors has ...
My last comment was in response to one directed to me regarding RV's decision to sing high C in this duet, not to praise him. In my earlier comment about the same issue months ago, I praised both artists and explained why he had to do the high C. I cannot speak for others who were angry at her for having the names of RV&Frontalli in much smaller prints than hers on the cover of the Traviata DVD(online reviews). I have defended AG before on artistic matters, not personal ones.
Because Sr. Vargas earned it by providing audience around the world with his beautiful singing for over 20 years. Becasue he is a wonderful person on and off stage.
True, the high C was not originally written for the tenor in this duet, nor was the high C originally written for Che Gelida Manina. Singing of this note forte by the sopranos is just as bad because it was originally intended to be sung very softly and fading away (pianissimo perdendosi). At least RV sang his high C in a very controlled, sensitive manner.
Lo más tierno y sublime de toda La Boheme han logrado expresar Vargas y Gheorgiu. Estan a la altura de los mejores intérpretes que he escuchado de esta enternecedora escena.
The dvd is available now. I have been wondering myself why another bohéme? each time a new one came out. I thought we didn't need another Bohéme. But after having seeing this, I must say you all NEED this terrific Bohéme seriously. Since Stratas-Carreras', this is the best Bohéme available! Don't miss it: all perfection and emotion.
Terrific performance by both. I don't think that Vargas had any option but to sing the high C since he treated the same MET audience to five blazing in-your-face high Cs from the Cenerentola aria a decade ago. But he did his best to control his volume to produce a more haunting, romantic effect. Problem is there are not too many Dorothy Kirstens around to match his idea. Tebaldi,Freni, even Caballe, now Netrebko and Gheorghiu had to go all out with their steely high Cs. Still great. Thanks a lot
Maybe your the idiot wop999!!! Changes in the vocal lines here and in Che Gelida Manina have become common practice. I don't even think you would recognize the written notes for "la speranza" in Che Gelida Manina since it is almost NEVER done! Read the score! Audiences would be shocked to hear that! Finally, the Conductor always has the final say in these matters. Look at some of Muti's critical editions of the 80's and 90's where many long practiced high notes were excluded. Play nice!
Oh, one other thing. Listen to the many O soave Fanciullas on here. When the tenor takes the C with the soprano at the end he usually sings in unison all three "amores" to the high C. Here Vargas sings the second "amore" with the harmony you so cherish and THEN goes up with Gheorghiu on the last amore. Very interesting and passionate and seemingly an intelligent and well thought out ending. If you got it and it aint forced why not do it? All that matters is that the mood is EXACTLY right
why do tenors think they also have to sing the high C at the end of this quaint duet? The score as Puccini wrote it has the tenor line go to an E- this creating an inteval of the sixth- much sweeter than two blaring high C's. Just because you have it doesn't mean you have to flaunt it!
The music should come first and in this music, this period, in a thru-composed piece, the harmonies are key. The unison high C sounds like they walked offstage and stepped on a cat in the dark. Not terribly romantic.

Ramon Vargas is the best tenor living on earth today! He have had this position for some time but PR-stunts have blurred this fact.
BRAVO VARGAS!
