Thanks for your video John, I'll be watching more. Very thorough explanation of how agave is a product of a lot of processing. I was wondering, how do you feel about organic maple syrup? While I do want the vast majority of my sugar intake to come in the form a fruit, I quite enjoy maple syrup and planned to tap some maples for the first time with some friends during sugaring season, then gently heating it until the I've removed much of the water...?
Is stevia ok on the liver? I have hep c through a blood transfution years ago and have to be very careful with the liver. By the way, what can I eat that would really work on healing my liver.
What about growing your own agave plants...or can you buy the agave plant leaves at markets and such? I am in London, so I doubt if I could grow it here in England, but I do grow my own aloe vera plants, in my flat (apartment), on the window ledge, when they are big enough I hack off the leaves and add the gel to smoothies or chew on it to help teeth problems.
Yes, please try that! Im sure you will quickly find out that you can not eat the agave "gel" like you can of aloe gel. Agave gel contains toxins that have been known to "burn" your skin if gets on you. I dont want to imagine what it would do if you ate it..
@okraw Oh, I didn't know that. I was just thinking of a way of consuming the agave fresh, as opposed to processed like corn syrup and I assumed that you could consume the agave gel, like aloe vera, so no, won't be trying that at all ! lol. Regular agave syrup does have that golden colour, like it has been heat treated, but I did get hold of a clear agave that was labelled "really raw", it came in a glass bottle, from a raw spirit festival some years back, it tasted ok, from what I remember.
@okraw That's true of only a portion of the agave species. Eating the fluids of these species would cause phytotoxic burns pretty much no matter how you processed it. For the fructose/sucrose intolerant, Stevia is the way to go. Honey is metabolically identical to most organic brands of white agave.
I agree John, there should be more emphasis in the raw world with purely natural foods, as opposed to imported, processed stuff. You will find on some raw food sites, selling all sorts of magical, potions etc..but the whole point really about locally sourced, fresh fruit and veg? Growing your own is the answer, and it is so sustainable and logical, from making your own cleaning & beauty products, to creating your own compost! The more you look into it, the more "right" it all seems.
I guess I can't have any type of sweetener! I got a fatty liver from just plain sugar & honey. so guess I give up all sweeteners. I go into grand Mal seizers with artificial sweeteners. I do grow and use a little stevia. Can't handle any refined simple sugars or starches now.
This may be a little off topic.....But is that a q-link necklace your wearing? If so... Do you feel that its working for you? Anyways, thanks for all the great videos. I might try growing some of my own food. The only snag I would probably have to deal with is winter since im on the east coast.
@okraw Hi John, i have a Q-link also, been wearing it for just under a year and it def works for me! I got it to help me be able to use a cellphone and help me stay online for longer as I found I could only stay online for a few minutes due to EMF allergies..well..it has helped amazingly with the computer, but not the cellphone, but no big deal, I am happy enough just to be able to stay online and to go into cafes and pubs without having to worry about wifi.
Our sugar 'addiction' is one of the biggest cause of depression in this country. As soon as I learned that and began controlling/diminishing my intake, my own depression problems came considerably under control.
Besides fruits, honey has always been my #1 choice for a sweetener, but I wanted to try agave and bought some but now that I finally finished the bottle I don't plan on buying anymore. I'm going back to good old raw honey.
Thank you John for all the free information, I am new to raw living and I wish I saw this video before I went to whole foods. I wish you would have a receipe series and save me from making more mistakes. Thank you :)
Hi John I agree with you that the agave is not good. I make ice cream and I am experimenting with stevia and honey which I think would be much healthier than agave I've been using. Thanks for your great videos!
I harvested lovely forest onion which grows here in Denmark in the forest wild and its delicious! And soon it gets lovely white flowers which you can eat XD Love nature so much! How about honey, raisins and dates?

Turbinado and Sucant are not raw. They are heated too much. That being said, we want to KICK the sugar addiction. Fresh fruits are best followed by dry fruits. Im sure your liver would appreciate the turbinado sugar more than the agave, but your blood sugar might not..
I think honey is an excellent sweetener. A locally raw, produced honey from a local beekeeper (from a farmers market). Many honeys now are being imported from places like India and China, where I have heard they may be adulterating them. That being said, we want to "kick the sugar" addition. I use honey maybe once or twice a month. Eat fresh fruits, they are the best sources of sugar.. Followed by dry fruits.
Funny story: I actually got a bit drunk from salad dressing made from agave and apple cider vinegar that sat at room temperature for a few days. I didn't realize that tequila was made with those ingredients. Needless to say I no longer do agave.
Wow thats crazy in agave syrup. I never tried agave and never will. I love just fruit!! Its the best sugar to eat:) I dont need extra suger like agave. like the natural sweetness from fresh fruit:D
Darnit!!! Just finished off a bag of agave sweetened granola i got from wholefoods last week. Why didnt i watch this video sooner!?!

One more question. I usually use raw honey as a sweetner or stevia. Is the honey and stevia ok. I must have a sweetner.

The best "sweetener" is fresh fruits - They contain sugar, but in small amounts compared to the water, fiber, and all the other nutrients.
