...erm....no he's definately a prick....even if he can blow thru a pipe particularly well. You can tell from old clips that he (and Dylan) is (are) definately very rude, very early in their career. It's not just because he's been around a while. It's ok folks...you ARE allowed to not be mesmerised by musicians when they aren't performing. They have a hole in their arse too
I'll agree with all of you that Miles is an amazing musician BUT I don't mind sticking my neck out and asking if anyone else thinks that he comes across like an arrogent pr*ck?
John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Jack Dejonette, John mclaughlin, Marcus Miller, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Kenny Garrett -- so many have made their name, devoloped their style under the tutelage of the king, the legend, the angelic voice -- Miles Dewey Davis III
it's so sad that there's only one bassist on your list who is even considered more of a producer than bass player (although he's good).. no one cares about bass players T__T
Miles didn't lose his voice because of drugs. It's in his book-- he had a problem with his vocal chords and the doctor told he to rest them for a couple of weeks. But later that day, he got in an argument with a manager or someone and he yelled at them.
That yelling ruined his vocal chords forever.
Yes he used drugs, but that's not why his voice was reduced to a whisper. And as you can hear, there was nothing wrong with his lungs.

He used drugs so much it fucked up his voice. You would expect that someone with such a voice his lungs are completely fucked up, but then you hear him play...
This song brings a tear to my eyes, everytime I hear it. Anyone who thinks that Mr. Miller is a Jaco clone is an ignoramus. He was influenced by Jaco, as was every serious bass player...including myself!. Marcus Miller is the modern day Jaco...in my opinion, and I think the jazz charts speak for themselves.
Marcus Miller wrote it as a tribute to Jaco, who died in 1987. Jaco was a huge influence on Miller, to the point where in his VERY early career (late '70s) he was dismissed as another Jaco clone) But fortunately, he found his own voice and has quite possibly the most recognizable bass sound of all time
First CD I ever bought , before that everything I owned was on vinyl . We didn't own a CD player until that point......... man, these kids today are so spoiled with all that technology lol
I think that Miles was just saying that he got the same feeling that Marcus got but dealt with it in a different way.

I think at a certain point in your career you deserve to be a little arrogant. He had had the skills to back it up.

any one know what kind of sax that dude's playing??

That dude is Kenny Garrett, he's playing a straight alto. I'm not sure of the brand.
He usually played alto, but that one looks funny because it's 'straight' kind of like a soprano
