Correct me if I'm wrong, but friction will always be the coefficient times the normal force. The inclined plane does not affect the friction; it ONLY affects the normal force, and it does that by a factor of two. It halves the normal force, so it halves the friction force, and no more.

Friction will be less but it will nevertheless increase the required force instead of decreasing. For a coefficient of friction mu=0.3, the required force will be reduced by about one quarter instead of a half (F= m*g*sin a + mu*m*g*cos a).

They would have been better standing it on one narrow end, then rotating it around on one corner of the box. This would reduce surface area in contact with the floor, thereby reducing friction, and thereby the energy required to manuever the box It would also provide a fulcrum point such that the length of the box would represent the lever (and Archimedes would be proud) again reducing energy requirements. Further, it would allow greater freedom to rotate around the corners on the stairs.

@STNeish Have you ever tried moving boxes the way you suggest? The length of the box can't be used as a a lever because its weight is distributed along it, creating a moment of force! And the corner of the box may slip. For the corners although rotating the box might be useful.

From this fulcrum, you can rotate it to face whichever direction you need it to be facing, with little effort required. By rotating it so the opposite corner is on the stair, you can then use leverage to move the box onto the stair. Repeat until you reach the top.

@ShmelevJr Meh, no worries. It's hard to describe with the limited space here. Imagine the box resting on its narrow end as it was initially. You then tilt it back slightly, so it is resting on the back edge, and then to the left so it is resting on the point of one corner. You can now rotate clockwise with minimal resistance. You then rebalance on the (newly) left corner and repeat. Stairs are harder.
