My favorite rendition...thanks are due to ksatyr for uploading it---figured that there was as much chance of locating this Muppet sketch after all these years as there was of seeing one of Rolfs puppy pictures!
Omg. I had this playing whilst I was on another page, and at 2:06 I thought he'd shot himself cause it sounded like a gunshot. Scared the shit outta me.
The Muppets musical numbers are always fantastic, best examples are this and "Windmills of your Mind", two interesting songs with very unique takes on them in the form of the interesting skits.
Even though I'm a metal guy, this is a song that a real songwriter dreams of writing in his life. I love this song, always have, and having the Muppets do it makes it even more special to me. I'm glad that technology like the internet is available so that my child can now enjoy the same things I did as a kid :-)
@Madams1977 I agree with you. I'm a metal gal and I've always appreciated deep lyrics with meaning. not all but most rock songs have meaning behind their songs. I love the muppets, and this song is awesome. I have it on my ipod. :P I've always liked music like this. rock originated from songs like this.
how many times have you found that a musical artist deals with things before they happen by their music.
it would be interesting to speak with him to see what he was exactly thinking when he wrote it.
a interesting subject of a song for a young man to write unless he had a sensing he was leaving soon will do some googling to find the reference where I picked this up from
I cry everytime this song comes on. This was played at one of my best friend's funeral, and it really hits me every time I hear it. R. I. P. Jean Good! :,(
It has always hit a spot with me just something about the background that jim croce seemed to know he was on his way out when he wrote it or so I have heard
It seems like a good going away kind of song. Actually, when they played it at my friend's funeral, they said that it had been played at her wedding, and so that makes it even more special.
I hadn't really seen too much of the Muppet Show so we got them and were watching a bunch last night, this was in one of them and it made me cry, just had to find the vid today and share it around. So amazing.
This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. Why is it that we take muppets so serious, Why do we let these characters affect us in such was that we feel hurt when they hurt, or happy for them when things go their way. Jim Henson is a total genius for creating such enduring characters.
it's called anthropomorphism- assigning human characteristics to nonhuman things. we we see things we can relate to we see the characters as "real" with real personalities instead of, in this case, felt and foam.
It's far easier to do when the characters have such well defined personalities and even little things can make it more real. That was Mr Henson's genius, the ability to breathe "life" into his characters and create strong stories that spoke to both kids and adults.
I'm not neglecting the other puppeteers and story writers that worked with him, they deserve equally as much credit, but it was his overlying vision that created such an enduring legacy.
It's not suppose to be sad, it's suppose to be romantic. The concept all revolves around the idea of desire and wishes in the face of inevitability.. you can't live forever and things won't go your way. But wouldn't it be nice if..? Henson just sang it with a tragic tone to his voice. guess he played it that way.
i am TODAY 26, and comming from croatia, just remmembered some stuff and this song on this day, i have album that is a real record from 1978 that my brother got from america, on it I rly like that song and those from Gonzo Wishing song, both are SO TRUE...those who made muppets is genious, and its best from the core of humanity, all best things....THX to tham, and all ppl that like tham, we are few but we belive:))
This vid is a fine interpretation of the song. But the Muppets were specialized in that. Their way of getting a meesage across was part of their universal appeal.
I wouldn't dare to say that the singing is better than the original, but the "video" is very awesome and adds allot for me personally. I love me some Muppet Covers. (I wouldn't buy an CD of them, but a DVD would be sweet)
I've been looking for this EVERYWHERE! Does anyone agree with me that the songs on the Muppet Show are better than the original? Haha, I honestly think so.
Yeah... I mean, I love the Muppets, but Jim Croce should come out of the grave and kick the asses of those saying this puppet's cover is better than his heartfelt and awesome singing. However, Jim was cool... and would probably just forgive them because they're obviously mentally impaired.
Comparing a Muppet to Jim Croce is just flat out wrong. The Muppets used this to make a point, and we should leave it at, "Point well taken!" There is no need to compare.
If anything, Jim Croce's song put the point in our head, and the Muppets version of the video drove it home.
I love this. I never actually saw this clip until now... I only heard it on my "Muppet Show 3" LP when I was little. I always wondered why his voice got higher with each verse. :) That record was why I love this song, though.
If you look, no liquid ever actually goes into his mouth. Bubbles do, and sometimes he tilts one back, but nothing really goes out of it. The liquid just washes about a little.
Wow. I barely remembered this bit having only seen it once over 20 years ago. But still it stuck with me, although a number of the details got muddled. I didn't remember the lab or why he got younger and for some reason I had always thought it was Statler who performed this bit. Ah how time dilutes memories. A shame I can't really save time in a bottle.
Jim Henson is a GENIUS... It is such a shame that since his death, the Muppets have become more and more child-oriented and lifeless. (the Muppets, NOT sesame street).
