It's too bad the public finds the shuttle so ordinary - it's the greatest single piece of engineering in human history.

Well, it's hugely admirable, but there has been better engineering. What makes the shuttle impressive is how it's such an old design yet was useful so long.

Now, if there's impressive human engineering, that was the Saturn V. That was the most powerful machine in human history, was made with vastly lessened technological assistance, and one might say had a better safety record. THAT was a greater offense for the public to have found ordinary at the time.
