That was a very good tape I have not pratice siging in a few years however I love it. I found a new deaf friend and he is going to help me learn, but I was surprised that I understood a lot of what you said I took a few classes at a local college many yrs ago. I will study all of your videos thanks
I take ASL in my high school and I watched this as sort of a test (Exams soon, lol). It's nice to see someone else sign besides my classmates and my teacher. I could understand almost everything. =]
I would suggest you start out with the book - Joy of Signing - it's been around for years. Then check the junior colleges, churches in your area or deaf associations. They generally have classes at a minimal fee, if not free. Best to you.
Can anyone give me advice on learning ASL? I'm very very very very new to this and have no lessons....but I did learn the alphabet...only. I still need lots of practice to become proficient and I can't "converse"...at all. Can I learn without going to a formal class? What do I do?
Watch for signs you know. Everyone's hands look a little different, so new signers can be thrown by reading sign from someone new.
This video is good pratice. You're forced to watch his sign and not read his lips. Hearing people don't realize they're reading lips and we tend to depend on it to 'fill in the blanks'.
I have 5 deaf cousins and many deaf friends, but I started with spelling and grew from there, just like everyone else. Keep watching stuff like this - you'll get there.
Haha, that was cool. I understood a little bit of it. That he said he asked someone about sign language and got a book about and stuff like that. Pretty awesome.
the rest of the vid..i was completly lost... i only saw a few words like...look, day, interpeter, how, learn, where and that kind of stuff.. hey i'm only in asl 1 so...lol..my reception skills aren't that great...
Keep studing, you'll get there. If you got that many word and close the sound which was a little distrating. Read it again and you find a lot more words. You did see BOOK,time, long time ago, see, person,me. It was very elementary. I could even read his hearing accent. Dont get too complex in your mind.Just practice practice practice.reading signs I find more difficult than speaking them
do you or anyone know a good vid that teaches just the basics. it would be nice to say thank you in sign language. I asked some man for directions and he signed to his daughter who translated for me. it would have been nice to "say" thanks............
u got a good amount for a ASL 1 student... in ASL 1 the teacher should be focused on vocabulary... you really dont get to improve your receptor skills until you get into ASL-2 and 3...
as u said u caught key vocab words and thats good...
but he was basically talking about how he learned sign and what he believes is the best way to learn sign... by going out and meeting the deaf community and learning by interacting with them...
If you look closely, you can probrably pick up a few words.I say we hearing people already use sign language, but we do not notice it.We see only movement.Look closely and see if you can pick up signs you already use in every day life.
You did good and keep up meeting people and sooner you get to talking faster.

I'm in ASL 2. It was very clear. I like your advice "stay curious". It is good receptive practice.
