Hi, I am deciding to buy either A33 or A55. Really confused. Is there any major difference in terms of image quality/color depth. or any other major difference. The price difference is $100. Thanks in advance for your time
@tvirdiTube if you can find the A55 at just $100 more, i would go with that. It offers faster fps (10 vs 7) and slightly higher megapixel count (16 over 14). Not factors that will affect the image quality, just an added bonus for just $100.
I love this review. I want to buy my first dslr. For me the video is important. What would you suggest? I have a few in mind ... Canon 5100, Eos 600d or the Sony A33. What would you suggest? I am a beginner so it is very hard for me to make the right decision.
hi i just see ur review about sony dslr.plz suggest me is it give a good image quality then the nikon dslr.and also is it give good picture at high iso?
@coolindro007 the Sony A33 and Nikon D3100 very closely matched in terms of high ISO performance. My recommend would be to head down to a camera store to compare the two side-by-side. This gives you the final impression of weight, ergonomics, button layout, etc. Hope that helps.
@kaiyun0403 I would go for the A33 and save yourself some dollars. Main difference is slightly higher frames per second (7 vs 10) and a nicer back LCD on the A55. All in all, the A33 is a very capable camera.
Nice review, but I'd like to point out something that you seem to be unclear about....
The "translucent" mirror ONLY reflects light up into to the autofocusing system, NOT to the electronic viewfinder. The EVF receives a "mirror image" (no pun intended) of what the main sensor sees. Sony states that the translucent mirror absorbs 30% of the light, with the main sensor receiving 70%. Considering we buy an APS-C sensor for its light gathering, do you think that losing 30% is too much of a penalty?
@ayokay123 thanks for the clarification. I do point out that a smaller portion of the light is reflected upwards to the AF and EVF with the bulk passing through to the sensor. Perhaps I could have been more clear.
To answer your questions if 'loosing' roughly a third of the light to the AF/EVF, i suggest you read my in-depth review. Click through to my website using the link in the video description.
@klausboedker Will definitely check out your review. Once again, NONE of the light is reflected up into the EVF. The EVF gets all of its information directly from the sensor, not the reflected light from the translucent mirror.
@ayokay123 you are right. I should have caught that when reviewing the camera. My written review is corrected. Would have liked to correct the video review, but the press sample is long since returned to Sony.
@drewkilkenny thanks for the correction. Someone else caught that in an earlier comment. Would like to reshoot video, but have returned press sample to Sony.
@ericbalcon you should be OK with a class 6 for video recording, so give it a whirl. In the end, if you find it slowing your down while shooting RAW or video, go shopping for a class 10.
"On the flip-side, you have to be OK with an electric viewfinder over a traditional optical viewfinder." what does that mean electric viewfinder and traditional optical viewfinder
@enJoyLifeLoveMusic in an optical viewfinder, the light from what you are photographing is guided through the lens into the viewfinder via a series of prisms or mirrors. In an electronic viewfinder the same light hits a sensor that then displays what you see on a small LCD in the viewfinder.
Great video, thanks. I'm about to purchase a camera and can't decide between this Sony A33 or the Nikon D5000, any ideas as to which is better? Any help would be greatly appriciated, thankyou =)
@Star11Light Feature for feature, you get slightly more camera with the A33. On the flip-side, you have to be OK with an electric viewfinder over a traditional optical viewfinder. Have you been in a camera store comparing the two side by side in terms of ergonomics, viewfinder etc? If not, that's a great place to make the final call which camera to go with.
@klausboedker thanks alot! took ur advice and to the store, and when comparing the two, Though i almost nearly went for the sony, I found that the Nikon was more suited to me. But thanks alot for ur help. all the best starlight =)
@Star11Light> I have the A33...very nearly went for D5000...glad I didnt. The A33 is FAST. Because the mirror doesn't move, I've been able to take shots at 7fps which with focus-tracking. My photography has reached a whole new level after 7 years. The D5000 I'm sure is very nice, but has SLOW live-view, but I would say better range of lenses, but on the flip side the A33 is compatible with AL old Minolta lenses. A33 EVF is very sharp @ 1.4mp, but the screen is also fantastic @ 91,000 DPI.
@maurice120687 - Hi. i went for the Nikon D3100 actually. its an upgraded version of the D5000, and though it doesnt have the advantage of the flip screen, it seems to be really really good. I was told that when considering a dslr, Nikon was the way to go. Hope it helps =)
Good review I have a question, but before I get to it I noticed a slight error in your review. You mentioned that the a33 shoots 10fps that is incorrect. The a55 does 10fps where as the a33 does 7fps. My question is I've heard that in video mode manual controls are limited. The user can choose whether to use auto or manual focus, but once in video mode the user cannot change the f-stop, aperture. Even if the user sets the f-stop & aperture before entering video mode the camera will change it?
@SeeBillyRun thanks for the fps correction. Appreciate it. Just checked the A33 manual, and shutter speed and aperture are adjusted automatically during recording. Before recording, you can set: white balance, creative style, exposure compensation, AF area, and metering mode.
Maybe Sony will provide more user control in a future a firmware update.
@JussBL4ZE could be that Sony's EVF technology still needs some refining. Let me reach out to my Sony contact to see if he knows anything about this issue.
@JussBL4ZE Well, it is not the sensor, so it will not affect your images. But then again having to look at the stuck pixels i darker conditions could also end up being annoying. Have you reached out to Sony's customer service?
hey man, have you noticed any stuck pixels on your a33 view finder.. Ive noticed quite of few of them on all black backgrounds or when the lens cap is attached.. its my second one from sony now.. wondering if thats just how it is, or should I return. your advice would be appreciated.
tasty review! thankee! i stumbled across your website when i was doing a Sony NEX-5 search then thought i'd slither over here and subscribe to your youtube channel!
thank you for the great review....there is more information and knowledge about this camera than anywhere else!!!
