@dunlaoghaire...I think it's time you sat down, had a nice cup of tea and let your medication take hold before you're allowed near a keyboard to type such nonsense.
I'm a big fan of lisa and obviously Nick Drake, but this is an awful, affected abomination. Why is she singing like that... bwak ide dwaaawgy... goneing ome and i dunt wunnit no
Lisa was in conversation with Bob Harris over the weekend ( still on iPlayer) & explained her reasons for performing the song in the way that she did. It's worth checking out. She also performed songs from Passenger, which are on here in live versions already. See Bing lounge/Kink radio channel.
Genius, absolutely genius. This is one of the best Nick Drake songs, everything about it is just perfect. Lisa's effort to make this sound as beautiful as the original but with a little bit of her in it is just perfect. Nick is a lost genius and I hope we won't lose Lisa.
Pretentious? I dont think so, just cause shes playing an instrument u've never seen doesn't maker her pretentious! This has me in tears btw. I have depression and its perhaps the worst that can happen to a human being. But this rendition spells triumph in the face of despair and sadness. Her chant at the end is just heartbreaking. Long live Nick Drake.
Really interesting cover. It takes the tired, resigned tone of the original and flips it on its head into a refusal to give up. I still prefer the Nick's, but it's refreshing to hear a cover that is essentially diametrically opposed to the original work so well.
where did you find the video recording? i want a copy, can't find it anywhere. saw the show recently and i'm still blown away, can't get this out of my mind cheers
YESSS!!! Saw Lisa perform this last night (13/11/2011) in the Melbourne (aust) version of Way to Blue - her 'Wild Angel' interpretation was fanfrickingtastic!! Multiply this video by a thousand to get an idea of how powerful it was. It was kind of Bjork meets Nusrat meets power and perfection!! Thank you Lisa, thank you Nick.
nick is from near my hometown of solihull. i have so much pride that one of the greatest songwriters and guitar players same from my hometown. he deserves so much more recognition
@hi0u50fd Wow, is that ever the truth. I started listening to Nick's music in 1969 and was totally blown away then and am to this day. He's gotten a modicum of recognition in the last few years, but he absolutely did deserve so much more. One of the best ever - rest in peace, gentle soul.
Nope. Sorry. Sometimes, you got the leave well the hell enough alone. Why? Why do this to a beautiful song. I understand in making the cover your own but what the hell is this?
to me, she renders the song differently by showing the conquering w/in the suffering. something we all do... fight to overcome that which would otherwise overcome us. as i hear it, her rendition is a tribute to that end. an offering of nick's song back to him, a man who surely would have wanted nothing more than to overcome. her love and care emanates. i can only imagine he would have appreciated it and been proud. Xx
A true sign of a good artist is creativity and Lisa shows great creativity here in her interpretation of this song. Good job Lisa and keep experimenting. You are bringing much joy to many people who love listening to your music.
Wasn't sure after the first moments if i was gonna to enjoy this cover, but wow. looking back, her eerie entrance is quite fitting for where she took the song with the accompaniment behind her. so full of life as compared to Nick Drake's version. but I've been feeling positive lately, so today, this take fits the mood.
Nickś is more Blues and this folk.. so you cant compare it at alle! -- I am a huge nick drake fan. and also lisa... Lisa is a happy kinda person, with warmth, Drake was a depressed individual... so why at all compare.. YES its a cover.. but come on.. take it for what it is.. MUSIC! AND THE REALLY GOOD KIND!!!
@justaddcorn There were several musicians there of greater weight and longevity than Hannigan on the tour with her ash she would probably assert herself.
why is this good? i love the nick drake version. this sounds like if bjork had played the jodie foster role in nell and covered this song. the song is about despair, not drunken irish jigging
Nick Drake is my all time favourite musician, and i want to marry Lisa Hannigan. Hearing her sing his song makes me so sad/happy. She's beautiful in every way. In and Out.
