@sleestalk Cass Eliot had a name. She was an exceptional singer before being "sooo fat". It is incredible how people instead of listening to music, look with more attention to the body where it comes from. Largerfeld Karl said something like this when him talked about Adele. But both, Mama Cass and Adele or Ella Fitzgerald or Montserrat Caballe... all of them are above comments like that. So without a purpose that it is not enough to weigh a gramme.
I'm from San Jose Ca, the Bay area is a beautiful place but, over the time it has gotten a little strange. I do love the bay area... born and raised in the Silicone Valley.
the confusion is understandable,,,this song was written by John Phillips of the M.and P.'s It's sung by Scott McKenzie who used to be in a group with John Phillips (I forget name of band) and,,yes thats them singing harmony,,possibly from Monterey Pop festival,,when they re-formed in 2000 Scott took Denny's place in the band,,along with Johns daughter Makenzie and singer from "Spanky and our Gang" 60's pop group
Back then it was so easy to be anti-establishment. You just had to protest against anything. today, we are so overwhelmed by ideas and concepts that it is so very hard to make out whats the best for the planet and the life on it. of course, love is basically all we need. but how do you act when someone points a gun at you? sing a song, get high on acid and grow my body-hair?
@PhuckFase What a joke! You ever hear the saying "the more things change the more they stay the same"? Back then it was easy but we have it so hard now. WHAAAA
I grew up then, it wasn't easy. 30 years from now when you look back you will realize how naive you were.
For those of you wanting to have been born inthe 60's you have it wrong. You needed to be born in the late 40's to have enjoyed this music. We were young hippies in the 60's hearing this for the first time. Mamas and Papas were great. So was San Francisco inthe 60's.
@coolsweetgroovy the new music generation with their parents' money and instant electromusic creations could never get it in a million years.. thank you D ((=~.~=))
@amarisisamazing really? no mobile phones, running hot water, washing machines? Plus not all the music was as great as this. I would be just gratetful that this has survived and we can listen to it now.
too bad cass elliot gagged on an apple what a sorry ass death. she could still be alive hustling gigs in los vegas and old timers and old fart conventions singing the old old songs that everybody has heard at least 100,000 times before
@nattylovegreens Also 19, seems there's quite a few of us young'ns still listening to proper, legitimate music, there is some hope yet. Flower Power forever! :D
Funny thing, my parents grew up in the bay area during that era yet did not smoke pot, attend Woodstock or protest. Instead my mom was a music teacher and my dad enlisted in the navy.
I wish people wouldnt say they likes a song despite their age!!! as if something to be proud of! yeah we may be 90 50 or 20 and love this song its not an age thing, it just recognising a good track and a great group! be proud of it, dont show off, just acknowledge it!
Im a was a little to young at the time to have really appreciated her but they were great. I am so glad the ham sandwich has been put to bed at last! RIP Mama we love you!
I also like Scott MacKenzie's version, especially with the psychedelic sitar part. He seems more melodic and less beat-driven; maybe more of the 60's feeling in his style.
This sounds like Mckenzie is singing the lead with the Mamas and Papas doing the backing vocals. Neither John nor Denny had the ringing in their voice that McKenzie did
It's almost like John Phillips wrote the song and gave it to Scott Mackenzie and then Scott was kind enough to let the Mamas and Papas do a version...Dan O'Niallain
a great song its a pity the mamas and the papas didnt record this back in the 60s def would have been a great hit with dennys vocals and john and the girls adding their magic
I wish less (insert #) year olds would wish that more (insert #) year olds would listen to the mamas and the papas.
