  • Won this game about a 800 times. I must have played this for over a month of continuous play time in total when i was young. I know all the ins and outs. Won with all characters, can win every jousting. Great addictive game, but actually full of bugs. Bugs were all your armys are reset to zero when the enemy takes a random castle far away; where your away team is suddenly duplicated in your home team (doubling your men), battle hangs when you click ferocious attack to fast. C64 has less bugs.

  • Cedric of Rotherwood looks like David Hasselhoff. Seriously, you hum a tune, enter it in youtube and there it is. I love this intromusic.

  • The DOTC is awesome. I want it as the Earth national anthem!

  • This is the most frustrating game I've ever played. Great graphics, great idea and setup, but completely fucking impossible to win! But yet I kept trying again and again and again and again again and again and again and again.

  • As a child i had a commodore 64 then the amiga 500 plus, i loved it. Despite the fact i was too young to understand games like DOTC, i remember the exiting part for me was the swordfighting in the castle, though i could never figure out how to play it and therefore i allways got beat, along with the jousting and most of the battles because i didn't know how to build an army lol.

God bless you cubex55 for your extensive archive on amiga games, it's a pity i won't get to play them again though.

  • one of the most beautiful memories i have of my childhood :D thanks for the video, i watched it all and i wish i could play it again at least once :D

  • @Bruciatino You can download an amiga emulator at amigaforever website. Its only 10 bucks and all u do is download the link-install and your ready to play any amiga game. They have all the cinemaware titles too.

  • OMG, the memories!

  • aw, u didn't call on robin for help. although u didn't need it. lol

  • Sorry, irgendwie ist das doch ein Scheißspiel...

Du verlierst 2 Soldaten, während der Gegner 10 Mann verliert.. Wo ist die Challenge?.

  • @GermanAdamSmith

Uh, I thougt, you are german :)

Where is the Challenge, when only 2 soldiers dies and on the other side, there are 20 casualties?

  • @GermanAdamSmith was erwartest du das spiel ist zich jahre alt und du willst hardcore action

  • @Onemanshov

Hä? Das will ich überhaupt nicht.. Scheinbar hast du nicht verstanden, was ich wollte... Lies nochmal durch, was ich geschrieben habe....

  • @GermanAdamSmith ja mist hast du geschrieben

  • @Onemanshov

Was ist eigentlich dein Problem? Hier nochmal -> Minute 6:19

. Von Hardcore Action habe ich nichts geschrieben...

  • 20:55 Denmark rules!

  • Holy crap - I LOVED THIS GAME!!! As a kid I actually thought the maidens were hot. Ha! God damn this ruled. One of my absolute favorite games ever. Thanks for posting.

  • Awesome video! Bring back old school memories!

  • I beat this on the C64. The jousting on the Amiga was buggy and I could never win.

  • face it ~ amiga 500 did It bettr til ~ well windows :)

  • 21:12 - that's still his hand she's holding right?

    *innocent childhood*

  • I never played this game when I had an Amiga but remember hearing a lot about it. But watching it now, there doesn't appear to be much to it at all.

  • I am far to be a C64 freak and totally amiga spoiled but got to admit that, besides graphics, c64 gameplay seemed better (my take). Finished it whatever Reginald,

Wilfried (my favorite and the easiest)... can't remember the third one... ://///

  • I saw this on a Amiga 1000 first (1 MB Ram), then I got it for my Amiga 500 (512 kb RAM). Back then I thought this is Grafics as good as its gets ;)

  • @dekkard And it was. ;) It was awesome pure and simple.

  • In that period, this was one of the most beautifull made games.

One of my favourite games together with The fairy tale adventure and Barbarian.

    Good old days.

  • Hey i can't get defender of the crown to work on WinUAE it just goes to black screen then crashes on me. What do i do?

  • @20:54 dude gets laid

  • Gotta love how the image of Ivanhoe is smiling after he's scored... :p

  • Were knights a waste of money?

  • I used to love this game. This vid brings back some really good memories

  • is there a defender of the crown multiplayer ??

  • @spoukas Unfortunately no, it's not.

  • I was about 7 when playing this one.. Never managed to win a tournament.. To be precise, never managed to win anyone.. How did you do it? Going for the shield?? I always had this question!

  • @Ermapeto Its almost impossible to with with anyone but Wolfric the Wild, as he was the only one with the STRONG rating in jousting. I always played as Geofrey Longsword.

  • One of the best Amiga games around. This is what made us fall in love with Amiga in the late 80's as kids. It looked and played so incredible.

  • the moment I fell in love with the Amiga. Can't believe it still looks and sounds so good 25 years on

  • This Game is for free with every other cinemaware amiga game (except the cd32 and cdtv games) as a winuae rom. I Love this game but its hard in the jousting tournament.

  • @AlienX99999 i was wrong you can also get the cd32 images on cinemaware

  • how'd u record this video?

  • @Slim6694

    WinUAE AVI Output

  • @cubex55 so was this played on a amiga computer or was it played on a computer with a floppy disk drive? If it was played on an amiga, how did u install the WinUAE AVI output?

  • @Slim6694

WinUAE is an amiga emulator for PC - google it :)

  • Geoffrey Longsword = Warren Beatty

  • I remember that while playing Ivanhoe and whenever I had to raid a castle (for loot or a maiden), I mostly got my behind handed to me in the swordfights. What's the secret for winning these bouts?

  • Ich finde die Grafik heute immer noch geil! Das Spiel war auch super. Da werden wieder Erinnerungen an die gute alte Zeit wach! :-)

  • I always found jousting for land was a waste of time. If you won the land, on your next turn the opponent would just take it back...

  • You know if you hold down the right mouse button as you click the left mouse button to buy/move soldiers, it does it by 5's instead of 1's? Just sayin'...

Phillip Malvoisin is one Norman you don't %&#@ with. He is the only character in the game that has ever been able to defeat me with any regular consistency.

  • DOTC was hard as shit. Never beat it.

  • I remember this game, it was average as :P

  • i remember this game. it was average as :P

  • My favorite part in this game was the end theme, when the hero is crowned king. An epic piece of music!

  • Wish the Amiga emulator could handle the music better. The romance sequence sounds especially atrocious. Still, thank you for the longplay vid!

  • Best game ever. :)

  • wow, i remember this game. it was like the first thing similar to a grand strategy RTS game I remember playing. now i love games like Europa Universalis 3 and Empire: Total War, which are more advanced versions of the same idea - i guess. lol. funny.

  • Fire so real, you could burn yourself!

  • One of the best Amiga games ever made!!!!!! TY for this video.

  • I remember how difficult was jousting or saving princess. :)

  • Pure ruddy class!

  • The graphics for the Amiga are much better of course. Or is it just me but I find the C64 soundtrack more appealing?

  • @jkeelsnc The sound was way better on the C64/128

  • when I first played this I was around 12... I never succeeded in winning the tournaments :)

  • In 21:02 before the brownie girl appear another girl that is blonde, and showing more cleavage. You have to be fast to stop the video in the right moment!! :D

  • holding the k on the keyboard when game was loading was a mad cheat it gave you 1000 knights

  • I find this game impossible on the nintendo ds

  • Wonder if Amiga makes laptops nowdays

  • @jaymorpheus1 They went out of business years ago.

  • Cedric of Rotherwood SERIOUSLY looks like David Hasselhoff...

  • Why do the enemy lords ever agree to tournaments when they know they're just going to lose, and will have to reconquer their territory?

  • HAVE AT YOU! XD

  • There is very good remake of this game on pc

  • God I remember I got horny like a dog at that love scene....... Now, old, bored and nothing could excite me like that.... I will never be a kid again!!!!

  • I remember in the jousting, I accidentally killed the horse doing this, once

  • After that PoS 8-bit nintendo... I was expecting the amiga graphics to suck a lot also.

  • the trick in jousting is simply put ur spear on the stomach of ur enemy(middle between spear and shield)

  • Amiga 500,the best computer ever

  • @ilovenanako2008

Actually (AGA) Amiga 1200 was much better. Depending who made the games.

  • i've seen this mistake now a few times in these descriptions and its bugging me too much:

lose - (v) to come to be without

loose - (adj) free or released from fastening or attachment

  • you played easy mode, right?

  • What is the Trick at jousting. I never win one!

    The Game was Super!

  • @SirAceMcFly

Just aim for the shield. Works a charm.

  • Nicely done, but you can complete the game a lot faster. Nice to see that you sticked around to trigger the Lady Rescue. But you forgot to show a few features of the game like 1) The aid of Robin, 2) Killing the opponents horse in the joust and 3) Raiding (ok its a lot like the rescue part) ^^

Nevertheless, nicely done good work! :-)

  • @Fuzzietech Exactly the features I'd have liked to see as well. :-)

  • what a great game with great music

  • I was horse shit at jousting.

Glad to see a win is possible!

  • me to! I don't think I ever won one!

  • Before the Total War game series, there was Defender of the Crown :)

  • i have finished this game in 12 minutes hahahah

  • There was more than one time when I thought "what the hell is he doing NOW?", but it seems to have worked out in the end ;)

Here's a tip for the Amiga version for everyone who sucked as bad at jousting than I:

While "assuming positions", move the mouse cursor in front of the horses head (bottom left corner) and just leave it there... you'll get a whole new appreciation for tournaments.

I don't know what it says about me that I still remember this, though...

  • EDIT: I meant the horse with the carriage.

  • you are great i was always loosing at jousting and i couldnot have a victory at all battles!!! 350 enemy troops and mine 35 at the 4th rounD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you drag the mouse around 21:01 you will see that a blonde girl flicker before Katherine. Must be some kind of graphics bug while randomizing the looks or something..

  • 21:02 *wolf whistle*

I played this ages before hearing of Led Zeppelin but it sure reminds me of The Rain Song on The Song Remains The Same video. "These are the seeeeeasons of emotion..."

  • The graphics are much better on the Amiga version but its believe it or not it doesnt have as many features as the NES! And it doesnt look as hard either - the only way to hang onto territory in the NES version was to build mini on it, and garrison it with quite a lot of men, took ages.

  • I still hum the theme tune to this sometimes :P

  • We used to have this for the NES, but at the time, I was too little to figure out how to play. After seeing the playthough, I think I understand what to do now. :P

  • Yeah I had it on the nes when i was about 6 and didn't really get what to do till I was loads older. Didn't understand about building armys and gaining land - and I used to love shooting the men coming over you're wall but didn't know you wern't playing well when they did!

  • wow... I remember this game.

For the jousting, do you hit the dead center of the guy's shield or hit the tip of the lance (that's what I observed in this video).

  • omg, takes me waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back lol

  • They ported this to the GBA

  • I LOVE THIS GAME, it is so much fun!!

  • no its not

  • 21:02 - Holy shit, it's Mystique from X-Men.

  • man i could never win the joust in the atari version, i tried everything! it always said i was too early or too late, or else i killed the guys horse

  • yeah same it was hell hard

  • thanks for sharing this game

  • What a great orgasm for this game...!

  • Defender of the Crown was released on the Amiga first. It was the prettiest version.

Unfortunately, there were bad bugs and gameplay issues discovered on the Amiga that were fixed while porting to other platforms.

The c64 version for example has much better gameplay.

  • I wonder why they didn't make the battles to be more spectacular - like in the C64 version.

  • Thanks, those were the days!

  • I never could joust, but Geoffrey Longsword and I raided heaps.. this was my SECOND FAVOURITE GAME EVER when I was little.

  • Oh yeah, I remember this one. Used to play the PC version on an Olivetti M15 laptop my father brought from the office. The CGA graphics were atrocious (green and blue, anyone?) and the shrill sounds of the PC speaker will always be burned in my ears, still I remember this game fondly. Oh, and I sucked big time. In all the hours I only managed to beat this tough mofo once. Geoffrey Longsword FTW!

  • OMG WHAT U REMIND ME !!!

  • Strangely enough, I thought the C64 version was better ...

  • I was wondering what to ask youtube after in order, bitmap brothers, shadow of the beast...

Lotus turbo challenge after this one but I am hesitating with stuntcar racer(this one, was on top of the top-notches) or simply... lemmings, finished on mayem, thanks for the teams pic at the end.

  • My father brought home the Amiga 1000 and a copy of this game during the summer of 1986; my life was never the same again.

  • Wewt!! Katharine with the yummy bewbles pressing them all over you in the dark!!

  • Yeah, once you figured out the trick to jousting, raiding and amassing superior troop numbers the game was super easy.

  • good ol times

  • I remember a moment when i was young... maybe around 14.. It was when i saw a Amiga for the first time, It started rather unimpressevly.. A white screen with a hand holding a disk, and then a blue screen with some info running on it... and then this... Golden letters on a stone wall, shining like they were real.. and music like nothing i had ever heard coming from a computer speaker... That was the Amiga. The Rolls Royce of Home Computers.

  • @GR8TM4N i remember seeing deluxe paint and it proper blew me away.. ive rarely if at all had that feeling since ;p

  • @GR8TM4N I agree with what you say, as I had this game for my Amiga, but early on I still had my Commodore 64 and I borrowed the C64 version of this game. I say this totally unbiasedly, because I was a fan of both machines, that the C64 version was much better as a game. Didn't look as good (but looked fantastic!), but had more gameplay options! I do not want to take away from the Amiga though, and every other Cinemaware game was brilliant!

  • @GR8TM4N Well put, those were my sentiments quite exactly.

  • I remember this from so long ago.

  • Revolutionary graphics for the time. Found it hard at first, but once you get the strategy down it becomes easy. I think my record in beating it was around 20 minutes.

  • It took me a few years to finally get somewhere in this game. It was too hard but so good.

  • i like this game, this game is Numbe

    r 1 in amiga!!!!!

  • I could never figure out the jousting in this game.

  • i was just saying the same thing...it was so hard!!!!! i hear you my bad jousting brother!!

  • Haha. We aaaaaalll sucked at jousting.

  • I figured out the best way to win was to aim the lance at the bottom of the opponent's shield... But even that took practice...

  • my favorite nes games

  • my favourite computer game of all times

  • 19:10

with ivanhoe's average swordplay skill i don't kill one very guy until i'm busted... what's the trick about it? is it the cursor's position? 1000 LMB clicks per second?

    i don't get it.

  • Its been awhile since I played it on the Amiga but my clicking finger aches just by thinking about it :S

  • Man, I was *so* bad at jousting....

  • We all were...

  • Ditto.

  • where i can download this version of defender of the crown?

  • there was a remake on the ps2 a few years ago and a mobile version

  • A very beautifull game! My second on Amiga. Some of pictures come from "Ivanhoe" movie with Robert & Elizabeth Taylor

  • great theme!

  • are there ne more games like this? if so, please list them for the DS

  • You have to have basic military knowledge to play this game. For example, you have to know which land to take and how to approach domination. Just thinking out loud.

  • "You have to have basic military knowledge to play this game"

    LOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • A classic among classics! One of the best games of all time! The Amiga rules!

  • wow.. this brings back memories :) one of my fav games a kid! :) the music is timeless :D

  • come on23 minutes?? so long for someone who finished shadow of the beast 2 in 30 minutes?? thats weird man this game was so easy

  • This could make a good movie!

  • Yes the music was great. I have it as Ringtone on my celphone for a long time

  • my brother played it when i was a child of 7 years or so. it was 88 or so.

Now i played it on emulator, i loved the music all the time, never went out of my head.

Took me some time to understand the tricks, and it is still a brilliant game, a lot of fun !

  • This game is great...hard..but great; I love it!

  • its easy now ..get Gloucester for home base

  • How do you do that?

  • precisely. 7 gold per month, and move south as quickly as possible.

  • Great! Now I won't have to play it anymore if I wish to show it to my friends :)

My Amiga 2000-A from 1987 can really rest now.

btw, Cinemaware developed the music with the audio filter enabled, which couldn't be disabled through software in the Amiga 1000 and early A500 and A2000 versions, back in 1986. The music really sounds better with the filter enabled.

  • Cool music!

  • Are You Robin Hood (secret HaHaHa)

    Excellent You Played Game Congurlations

  • Your skill is great.

  • I love this game. The music is like a bug in my brain ;)

But a few things I will never understand:

Why cant the fireballs be used in the Amiga version, why don't you see the Power in the swordfight and how is the right way to fight in a swordfight...

  • @ILoveKaters17 because the amiga version was the initial version, and because of financial problems, cinemaware released it without those planned extras. They needed to get the game out quick for revenue purposes.

  • I loved this game!

  • I bet some commadore nerds jerked off to the rescued lady.

  • lol. Ivanhoe & Katharine were the best looking couple.

  • Guess you are the nerd because we never came up with that idea...

  • A true nerd dont think of that :p

  • this was a reply to

"I bet some commadore nerds jerked off to the rescued lady" thread by sscartwright

  • The bad thing about the swordfight sequences were that you never knew which one would win until it was too late.

  • The Amiga version had a stupid duplicate bug where you could amass huge amounts of troops. This was fixed in the overall better C64 verson.

  • very very very old game but

    excellent

  • lol

    I was a child...

  • So good to see this again. They really did a great job with the graphics. Love the use of colour cycling to create the flame and water effects.

  • Classic! I love the part where you have to save a girl and make her your queen

  • Sheesh, what system was this? I played it on NES and the graphics on it sucked! But, it was still a very good game though.

  • It says in the video name - Amiga - a famous home computer from the late 80s and early 90s - look it up on wikipedia :)
