This really is an HDTV recording from 1991, and not a film transfer.

Analog 1080i HDTV has been around since the late 80s, and was actually regularly broadcast via satellite in Japan since the mid-90s.

As for the quality, if the original film is still available, this can easily be upscaled to 1080p quality. The TV airings and VHS copies are not able to do this, but the original footage can be used to upscale properly. This is how a lot of old movies get proper Blu-Ray releases, because the original footage was available to pull frames from.

@byronx11 all cinematographic cameras have even better resolution than 1080p, i dont know exactly when the appeared but i think somewhere in 80s, probleme was that there were no media wich can store that wealth of information. so old records in hight resolutian store in warehouse in original resolution. and now, when we have Full hd screens etc, directors convert old records in Full hd ;)

@mikeltreycoale You can go see videos from 1969 Woodstock that are of similar quality. For the most part, analog video can be scaled up very easy. Just TVs and the distribution media (vhs, dvd) were highly compressed, so you don't think of old video being near the quality we see these days.
