My personal opinion is that Trucks is an amazing slide player, and quintessential bluesman. He's absolutely amazing at what he does, Frusciancte is really creative and a great rhythm guitarist but doesn't really have the proper feel of a great lead player. John mayer is the complete package, he is the most versatile, amazing rhythm and lead, writes songs and sings.

You can't judge Frusciante's skills based on this jam because it's obvious he didn't even want to be there. He looked totally uninterested, and was the first to stand up and say "That's it?" at the end. He's never liked cooperating with the media and schmoozing. The other two guys are quite good but aren't even in the same universe creatively as John F. Doesn't matter how many blues solos you can play, they'll never write anything as innovative as BSSM or Frusicante's first solo record.
I'm a big RHCP fan, but after hearing this derek trucks guy and listening to a couple of his songs off his albums, he is by far the best guitarist sitting in that room.

What he lacks is the passion and creativity that John Frusciante plays with. I love listening to what John Mayer does and I love listening to his music but John Frusciante leaves me in awe every time I watch him play. They're two completely different beasts although I prefer John Frusciante any day.

All these guys are great guitar players for very different reasons. What they share in common is that they have and will continue to influence lots of guitarists for years to come. They also don't give a shit about who's better.
If not for this video, I would have never discovered the musical genius known as Derek Trucks. Thanks Rolling Stone for exposing me to some amazing music :D Also, I would just like to say that these guitarists can't be compared to one another. Apples, Shoes and Carpets, my friends. :)

John Frusciante only improvises, he makes up solos and riffs on the spot depending on his mood, that's why it might not sound so perfect. A guitarist shouldn't only think about technique, as this limits them as an artist. Playing guitar is an art, not a "read the manual" type of thing. 34 years of playing guitar is enough time to perfect upon a style, and he's good at what he does.

Pretty funny comments above --- Frusciante and Mayer are very good guitarists, but like the man says, Trucks is doing something different. The other guys wind up sitting around and admiring it.
To me, John Frusciante is the most creative and soulful of them. Mayer seems to be trying to show off, while Frusciante is a humble enough and doesn't need that. He looks lost in the end of the video, but he's not into blues like Mayer or Trucks... he's more into funk/rock playing. People who think he isn't good, I suggest you to watch the "Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live at Slane Castle" and "Off the Map" DVD. Simply mind blowing. I doubt you won't change your mind.
@peu239 ofcourse there is no guitar player that would actually base frusciante's skill or any of these guys' skill of off a 4 min blues vid. They all have their own styles, and these three are pretty much a good rainbow of different guitar colors put together. Mayer actually IS a showoff sometimes but when it comes to either fingerpicking to picking, pop or blues, electric or acoustic, he has something to show for it.

This interview is awkward. John Mayer seems to be the only one comfortable and charasmatic, which helps him break the ice a little bit.
Unfortunately, that charisma and comfort in the spotlight has turned him into more of a tabloid celebrity than a musician. Much less a blues musician.

Derek Trucks plays one hell of a friggin' solo. Incredible phrasing and note choice... not to mention John Mayer's fantastic progression/rhythm playing.
Would LOVE to hear a full on jam between those two... DT soloing over JM chords?

we can all be objective regardless of our opinions, it depends on how willing you are to accept the truth.Like me you can love Frusciante' stuff in RHCP, his composing and playing goes perfectly, this is obvious. You can still say objectively that he is not much of a guitar player. You can hate all the crappy music that Mayer has sold and still appreciate his guitar playing, becaus he IS great. Don't be impressed by the superiority of Trucks over the others, And don't fight about it! PEACE :D

John is not humble or quiet but he's kills john frusciante and its pointless to compare him to trucks because they are to different. I think John Frusciante is the second most overrated guitarist behind slash. He has no feel for his instrument and even though he can write good riffs, he plays like crap.

@Mattydilly Dude, I think we can all say something bad about guitarists, because none of them are perfect. John Frusciante only improvises, he makes up solos and riffs on the spot depending on his mood, that's why it might not sound so perfect. A guitarist shouldn't only think about technique, as this limits them as an artist. Playing guitar is an art, not a "read the manual" type of thing. 34 years of playing guitar is enough time to perfect upon a style, and he's good at what he does.

You have your opinion, and that's fine (not everyone has to think that Frusciante is a great guitarist), but then just keep it to yourself. all my respect and admiraton t Frusciante and Mayer for their guitar playing. Of course Mayer is a little arrogant.but people i don't understand how you can't see it! Derek Trucks is just in a level of his own. It's obvious that playing slide is quite different, but i'm sure that if you try it you would understand that Trucks is just way ahead of them. To me, John Frusciante is the most creative and soulful of them. Mayer seems to be trying to show off, while Frusciante is a humble enough and doesn't need that. He looks lost in the end of the video, but he's not into blues like Mayer or Trucks... he's more into funk/rock playing. People who think he isn't good, I suggest you to watch the "Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live at Slane Castle" and "Off the Map" DVD. Simply mind blowing. I doubt you won't change your mind.

@peu239 ofcourse there is no guitar player that would actually base frusciante's skill or any of these guys' skill of off a 4 min blues vid. They all have their own styles, and these three are pretty much a good rainbow of different guitar colors put together. Mayer actually IS a showoff sometimes but when it comes to either fingerpicking to picking, pop or blues, electric or acoustic, he has something to show for it.

@ballofcrap I think hes overratted as a guitarist not musician. I love there music but he cant play well. And i think his concepts are all obvious hendrix funk playing. He hasn't dove into trying to play original stuff. All of his riffs and licks are poorly played and taken from some other very famous guitarist. RHCP makes great music but fruciante cant play well.

@Mattydilly I seriously dont understand hows his riffs are poorly played? Yes his riffs may not be over complicated due to the fact he also does backing vocals/ lead vocals over them. His solos are allmost unbeatable for soul etc. And saying he takes from other guitrists, Yes he does, like pretty much every other guitarist does, John Mayor plays just like clapton and clapton plays just like blues players before him. But they add there twist on it. And I do play guitar im currently studying it.

Watch the above video, he struggles with his solo and stops playing all together from 3:45 on beacuse he doesnt know the blues chord changes mayers playing. He was only comfortable playing the most simple of riffs. Nothing original or impressive.

Which if you listen to frusciantes stuff he isnt a Blues guitarist. Im willing to bet you any money if you threw Mayer or Trucks into any situation with the RHCP that they wouldnt be able to pull off stuff that john can do when they are jamming. As a guitar player myself Ive listened to John Mayers music and while he's not a bad guitarist I dont see evidence that he is as good as he is given credit. My thing is while there are guitarists like Mark Tremonti and Keith Urban who are great guitarists and they get no credit or very little confuses me. Anyways thank you for your input if you feel I may have missed something with Mayers music please let me know.
