  • LBJ's "We. Shall. Overcome." times infinity.

There may never be a greater Presidential moment.

But there will be – when he signs the DOMA repeal, and who knows what more beyond that. It will happen.

Keep playing your cards close, Mister President. I am honoured to live in your era.

  • Thank you Obama for honoring Harvey-all gay people will remember this.

  • How moving to see our first black president honoring the first openly gay man elected to political office. Truly amazing.

  • @bboinnng Yes it is. I expected this as much as people expected Civil Rights from LBJ. He will be remembered as the Greatest President Ever.

    YES WE CAN

    YES WE WILL

    YES WE DID

  • He was assasinated for reasons other than being Gay along with another SF politician. The assasin was displeased with how the city was dealing with public works.

  • @dirtdemon6 Dan White from what I've read was a spoiled, pathetic individual who couldn't accept it when things didn't go his away. Perhaps homophobia didn't inspire his crimes but homophobia helped White get away with double homicide

  • harvey was shot, point taken now follow whites lead right.

  • What many of you don't realise... is that fear is often ingrained into us. If you are taught that being different is wrong, you are conditioned through fear. Obama would have to have dealt with that same fear of "difference" growing up as any person of different race or sexuality to the majority.

Fear becomes a condition when generations have been effected, it becomes part of your heritage, even if the times are better. It takes more then sorry, more then legal fixtures to overcome hate!

  • Obama knows about unreasoned hatred. About ignorance. Of course he would stand with gay Americans. Freedom isnt a bumper sticker or a slogan. Its about people being able to make choices of how to live their life. If that doesnt fit into your view of the world thats too bad.

  • No their path is not the same as American blacks. However everyone deserves equal protection under the law. Everyone deserves freedom from violence. If you think Obama is putting on a show I feel a bit sorry for you. Any American should feel strongly about ensuring these basic rights for American homosexuals whether or not they agree with their lifestyle.

  • The fight for gay rights is a fight for human rights. When you pass laws that allow the persecution and discrimination of one group of people, you make it easier to discriminate and persecute the next group of people. It doesn't matter what their skin color, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. are. Wrong is wrong! If "we the people" truly believe all men are created equal, then it is time to do what is right for ALL AMERICANS.

  • @MaryWaterton Nice Bible reference there... Unfortunately, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah has been perverted by people like you to come to be a story of "evils" of homosexuality. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were punished because they were inhospitable and cruel, something the homophobes of the world have come to represent very well. So when a fire and brimstone rains down from the heavens, it will be YOUR fault, not Obama's nor the homosexuals.

  • @sugarcube440 - HOMOSEXUALITY was the primary EVIL for which Sodom & Gomorrah were destroyed. Being "inhospitable and cruel" were additional sins. Stands to reason that if you are going to sink to the filthiest of all sins that being "inhospitable and cruel" costs you no extra effort. In the future, God will not rain down fire and brimstone ... He will send you to Hell where you will swim in it.

The wicked shall be turned into Hell and all the nations that forget God. (Psalm 9:17)

  • @sugarcube440

    Bravo!

  • the derogatory comments here about harvey milk and obama are absurd. get your facts right before you go mudslinging. any idiot who looked up any info about harvey milk would know that he fought for all minority rights and that dumbass comment about little boys is silly because it is still true to this day that 90% of child molesters are straight.

  • well said obama i give u props XD

  • for someone who doesnt like gay people you seem to be watching an awful lot of content about it.

  • Wow

  • i shouldn't be surprised but as always i am by the intellect of so many republican supporters. throwing out big words like marxism and communism, i'd have to shoot myself if any of them could actually tell me anything about those concepts having lived in a democratic nation all their lives. oh and by the way a lot of communist countries are doing just fine. it must be really easy to talk out of their asses when there's no brain function.

  • You're right. I didn't vote for Obama because I don't believe in Marxism.

  • So let me guess you voted for mccain who hated christianity btw.

  • lol @ :39

    the village people? haha

  • Empty Gesture

Repeal DADT and DOMA you liar.

  • Good job, now go repeal DADT like you promised.

  • Is somebody trying to win over some lost voters there?

  • NO OBAMA got 90 percent of the LGBT voters

  • And then he trashed their hopes for change. "A promise to be an ally, no less a fierce ally, to marginalised people who suffer institutional discrimination, whose inequality is codified into our very laws, who live at disproportionate risk for hate crimes because of the violent prejudice woven into our national fabric, is the kind of promise that cannot be made casually." One law after another. It's unlikely they'll ever vote republican, but If I were gay, I wouldn't give a shit anymore.

  • wimscheers

no 90% of the gay community voted for

him including my gay cousin and bisexual twin cousins =]

  • I like this, but it's not enough. He needs to push for full equal rights of LGBT people like he said he would.

  • It's coming. He had a meeting with the LGBT leaders recently. It's going to take a lot of political capital to give equal rights to LGBTs. Unfortunately, it'll have to come after healthcare & energy.

  • he just signed a Presidential Memorandum regarding federal benefits for same-sex couples

    =]

  • are you wondering why people are calling you a backwater crossbred idiot? go play your deliverance banjo and take social skills cleasses.

  • LOL I live in the Bronx you fucking moron. No banjos or back water there.

  • wow -- there is lots of stupid everywhere. even in the bronx. harvey milk wasn't an attorney . oops. dumb on you. i don't know why a revolutinary in latin america would want or need an attorney in san francisco anyway. to the best of my knowledge che was in the united states only once -- at that was as the head of the cuban delegation to the UN -- not on trial. i seriously doubt harvey and che ever even met. someone needs a fact checker before their slow dumb fingers type. .

  • Milk was never really a mayor just a city supervisor.

  • i never said he was. he was nicknamed "mayor of castro street". did you think streets really elect their own mayors?

your facts have been false all over the place -- why would anyone respect your opinion?

  • so that's what they honored him for? for being the so called mayor of the castro? a man who only sponsored two laws gets all of this accolade? face it he wasnt the man that penn portrayed in Milk he was a short tempered demogouge who invented stories about victimhood to further his career. no wonder why Obama's given him the medal. it's jsut what he did.

  • i think you protest a little much. he gave a lot of people courage to stand up for themselves. he was not short tempered or a demogogue. he actually cared about the people in his neighborhood. his association with jim jones was distant at best -- people from his church helped man phones you got a long way to go before you are rush limbaugh. are you even morbidly obese yet? after that you have to figure out how to land a few million a year from donations from your sheeple. and lots of oxys.

  • calling harvey milk a communist is just plain stupid. he didn't help jim jones kill anyone. i hope one day someone you know turns into a serial killer -- then everyone can say you are a communist that associates with murderers. the reality is you are a morbildly obese windbag that can't get laid and spend your nights wet dreaming about horses so to make up for it you go on the internet and call everyone names. kill yourself. you have my blessing. wheres the liberal death squad when you need em?

  • you never saw me, you dont know me lol you dont know what i look like lol. yeah, ok. psycho.

you made no point whatsoever. how much do you get paid to sit here all day. how much does obama pay you 10? 15? per hour?

milk supported jones that means he helped jones kill those people. hey people who looked away in nazi germany werent murders but just b/c you dont actually murder doesnt mean that u dont help the actual murder. sip that kool aid.

  • Well, you know, maybe if he wasn't killed he could have accomplished more.

  • Oh and I'm sorry I mustve had a brain fart. it happens.

It was JIM JONES who Milk associated with. even worse. Killing 1,000 people with kool aid in order to rule by dictate over subjecated idiots in a communal type setting. Milk occasionally spoke at Joness San Franciscobased headquarters, promoted Jones through his newspaper columns, and defended the Peoples Temple from its growing legion of critics. Jones provided conscripted volunteers for Milks campaigns. Sorry my mistake lol.

  • What the hell does supporting H. Milk have to do with Marxism? Sometimes I think you people don't even know what Communism is and just think everyone left of Reagan supports Marxism.

  • 1. Che can go fuck himself for all I care. The violent prick.

    2. You can go fuck yourself to. You arrogant generalizing prick.

    3. I don't know what righ-wing rag told that Milk represented Guevera but it never happened Which would explain why I can find not even one mention of it on the internet. Not even on the most paranoid of right-wing sites. Odd.

  • oh yeah it's all right wing rags to you people. you're just ignorant and dont want to see any other opinions except your own. your the classic example of the intolerant liberal.

  • Yeah. Because I call for evidence of your lies that makes me intolerant. You're a joke.

  • Um, Harvey Milk wasn't a lawyer...He was a stock man in New York and then moved to San Francisco to open a camera shop. Che was dead long before Milk was in the newspapers, as a matter of fact, Che was dead long before Milk switched from Republican to Democrat. It appears that you're quite ignorant. I'd love to see your sources for that load of b.s.

  • Here here!

  • So Native Americans are gay?

  • Yes, some of us are. Native Americans also accepted transgendered people into their communities without a problem. You'll just have to deal with that.

  • I live in SF, I'm used to it.

  • yeah but he doesn't support gay marriage. He might as well piss on his grave to close.

  • actuallty harvey milk would have laughed at that he was not one for marriage

  • Lol! Who invited the Village People?

  • I think recognizing Milk like this qualifies as Obama throwing the GLBT community a bone. Symbolic gestures are appreciated, but this is not what the GLBT community needs (and Obama knows it). GLBT need meat, not bones. Repeal DADT. Repeal DOMA. Give gays the same rights as straights. Allow America to live up to its promise that ALL, not some, are created equally (& thus should be treated equally)

  • Here here!

  • Keep in mind who murdered Harvey Milk.

    Keep that in mind.

Nice to see some Native Americans in the crowd.

  • Wow! This is right on!

  • Seeing Sidney Poitier made my goosebumps come out. He has done so much for the AA community that it is taken for granted.

  • I'm proud of you Obama. Pulled a few bullshit kicks in the past few months, goods, bads; but this is far closer to the internal positive doctrine that your campaign ran on.

    Awesome.

Very few other men deserve such a great honor as Milk.

  • Obama is all about trying to raise his public approval ratings - and that is what this whole thing is about.

  • Yeah sure, the best way for a politician to raise his approval ratings in a country teeming with homophobes and inbred troglodytes is to publicly commend a gay man.

Next thing you're probably gonna tell is for a Latino to get on the good side of white racists is to advocate illegal immigration and a $5000 tax credit for each newborn child.

    You stupid fuck!

  • Obama has been LOSING HIS BASE.

With all of his "compromising" with Republicans on health care -- WHICH IS NOT WHAT WE ELECTED HIM AND GAVE HIM 60 SEATS IN THE SENATE TO ACCOMPLISH!!! -- the left is expressing DISAPPROVAL.

Its not the right who is leaving him. THEY NEVER LIKED HIM!! His approval ratings are plummeting, because he has taken the public option off the table. And single payer never even got ON the table!!

He better GET BACK to the man we elected.

  • I agree. We do not have to be bi-partisan. That seems to be the excuse everytime the president won't pass something. Or allow the American people to set the standard. I still like him. But my vote can be used elsewhere.

  • "Their relationship was troubled: McKinley was prone to depression and frequently threatened to commit suicide if Milk did not show him enough attention.[13] To make a point to McKinley, Milk took him to the hospital where Milk's ex-lover Joe Campbell was recuperating from a suicide attempt, after his lover—a man named Billy Sipple—left him."

    He was against big government!

  • the "goldwater republicans" were conservative. gay rights at the time would have been more embraced by conservatives -- real conservatives. less govternment -- as in keep your laws out of my bedroom. at the time the apa still decried homosexuality as a mental disorder. ask relatives -- you usually had to produce an opposite sex spouse for any professional job. it was a different world and conservatives weren't neo-conservatives yet. i can't name a real conservative in govt now -- can you?

  • "He started a relationship with Jack Galen McKinley, and recruited him in the fight against the proliferation of big government by persuading McKinley to work on conservative Republican Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign.

  • the best President

  • What about Harvey's enthusiastic and wholhearted support of Jim Jones and the People's Temple?

  • He did not enthusiastically support Jim Jones, nor did he support him wholeheartedly. Jim Jones was a powerful man in San Francisco during the 70s and many politicos attempted to stay on his good side. Harvey was frightened by Jone's influence and saw it as a necessary evil to do moderate business with him. Their relationship went no further than Jones ordering a few of his followers to campaign for Milk.

  • "Rev. Jones is widely known in the minority communities here and elsewhere as a man of the highest character"

Excerpt from a letter to then President Carter defending Jim Jones, AFTER defaming articles had already been published.

I'm not saying he knew what was at the heart of People's Temple and overlooked it, or was at even charmed, but he didn't look any further than the fact that "they can get me some more votes." Just like any other politician.

  • I stand by my previous statement. What you have just stated isn't proof that Harvey was "just another politician." Again, Milk knew the influence of Jones and the purpose of a campaign is to win**, not lose. I'd take votes from anyone I could get. If they vote for me they endorse me, I don't endorse them. Jones played his hand in many other local politico's campaigns as well. I'm sure he did defend Jones in the context of the times, for no one knew what was really going on w/ the Peo. Temple.

  • "If they vote for me they endorse me, I don't endorse them."

What is the f&%king point in representative government if you don't? Perhaps it's nothing more than a series of contests to win? Actors in a 'Fantasy Primary'

I would think that a man with so much influence would be one to be scrutinized, rather than taken at face value.

"no one knew what was really going on w/ the Peo. Temple. "

Enough people knew to speak out about abuses going on there.

  • During the GOP primaries in 2008 it was discovered that quite a few Klan members supported Ron Paul. Do you think that Ron Paul was a racist, or endorsed their behavior or even their views? No, of course not. However, he took their money. Does that make him a bad person? Plenty of powerful people are taken at face value to then be uncovered as wackos. Your out-of-context snippets isn't enough to turn Milk into an ass.

  • Those snippets were intended to make you into the ass, although I don't think you need my help.

enough of this comment nonsense, expect a video...

  • since christians have the highest divorce rate in America, i believe they should NOT be allowed to marry.

christians are destroying the sanctity of marriage!!

  • would he have gotten this without the movie

  • Yes.

  • The anti-gay people have already lost, now they seem determined to lose with absolutely no grace or dignity whatsoever.

  • when did they ever have grace or dignity? hatred and bigotry are only qualities to strive for when you have no concept of morality. like fundamentalists.

  • obama isn't liberal enough

  • Don't "feed" the trolls.

  • What if we feed them to each other? Or themselves? No. You're right. There are a few that simply should not be fed.

  • This is great, but the president needs to support marriage equality by the time 2012 rolls around, and do something on DADT (how idiotic can policy get?) yesterday.

Millenials (we're a significant part of the coalition that elected him) understand the political considerations, but at some point Democratic leaders have to acknowledge the inescapable truth. Our gay friends, co - workers, and neighbors deserve the same rights we have. For them not to have them is just plain wrong.

  • What does socialist mean?

  • When the tyrants elected to office try to take away your ice cream.

  • I don't even have any ice cream to take.

  • toilet paper rationing! toilet paper rationing is socialism! thats what you get with a moor in the white house! read Othello! Socialism!

  • I think you're going to be able to wipe your ass just fine.

  • Othello! LMFAO! My favorite YouTube comment of the week. Thanks. (Psssst... it's gonna fly over a few heads though, my friend.)

  • "socialist." Do you even know what that means? In Sweden, during the financial crisis, the Govt. took over a bankrupting bank, got it back on its feet and sold it with profit. Change the system, dont throw money at it.

  • DADT is so fucking stupid. A co-worker of mine recently told my boss that he's gay. And no one gave a shit. Which is good. Because your sexual orientation doesn't automatically mean you can't hold a gun.

  • give them hope while keeping DADT and upholding bigoted anti-gay marriage laws

  • No shit. I wanna like Obama. I really do. I voted for him. But I'm just continuously let down by him.

  • billwenham you have a friend here. The first step toward happiness - believe me you could be my kid - s to let go of all kind of "cults" created by men. Please read my channel. Religion, bible, Torah, Coran et al are but created by a bunch of psychotics which never, ever should be allowed to be published. the fact that makes us decent does not rely on any fairy tale book but within ourselves. This is the gos people should believe. This is the reason god gave us gray matter and enabled us to think

  • Give some hope to Dan Choi

  • Honor our soldiers by repealing DADT.

  • Oh the conservatives are gonna love this....

  • Do you have any responses that aren't pre-typed?

  • Even Obama's plan to bring troops home was a 16 months plan, get your facts straight before you start bitching.

    **

Just watched the 2009 Presidential medal of Freedom on tv, so moving.

  • You are correct: His commitment to bring combat troops home by May 20, 2010, and end the war gave him an edge among Democrats over candidate Hillary Clinton - But it was a lie: He has increased troops & promises to leave residual troops!

Obama promised to reduce defense spending; but increased it this year by 8%

Obama's words, America must "lead the world in battling immediate evils and promoting the ultimate good."

He wants to add 65,000 troops to the Army and recruit 27,000 more Marines.

  • hey hey ver

  • Hey hey classicallady, do we know each other?

  • Don't think so sewwt hear but everyday I make friends here.Peace.

  • Barack, it sounds good but you need to look into prop 8. For real. Let those people get married.

  • You're kinda nutty.

  • Uhhhh, you mean the International Monetary Fund? Doesn't seem so bad.

  • European & American state aid is interlocked into the International Bank of Settlements, which is tied to World Bank, which is tied into the IMF, which is like all things: Tied into Goldman Sachs!

AIG is run by Edley of Goldman Sachs!

All roads lead to: Goldman Sachs!

Why don't sheeple want to be independent of Goldman Sachs & JP Morgan?

Instead their lives are dictated to by a bunch of arbitrage wielding sycophants & sociopathic criminals who profit by destroying the system!

  • arrest the Fed, seize their assets, and jail all that rob the treasury, but we could start with Goldman Sachs, just so long as we get started. tj

  • How about D.E. Shaw & Co, World Trade Organization, Bechtel, RAND Corporation, Albright Stonebridge Group, Koch Industries, Project for the New American Century, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Bank for International Settlements, American Enterprise Institute, Mitre Corporation, St. Petersburg Times, Latham & Watkins, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies?

Do you know any of these?! No. I thought so. You think Goldman Sachs is evil, wow...you have no idea...

  • st pete times on the same list as rand, aei, etc gives me reason to ponder why. maybe i am just outdated. i thought st pete times was one of the few independent papers left.

goldman sachs was given a big shiny colorful beach ball by the united states government and they ran with it. calling them evil for playing inside the rules the government made for them is missing the point of why government and business shouldn't be in bed together unless your idol is benito mussolini.

  • St. Peter Times is not run by Jesus. Paul Tash sits on the Pulitzer Prize board. Politifact got a Pulitzer Prize. Paul Tash gave himself an award. Paul Tash sold CQ to The Economist (a.k.a Rothschild) Just like any other business, it has a hole that leads to some kind of ridiculous conspiracy theory.

Having a lot of former employees in the government doesn't make Goldman Sachs evil. UBS sits on Obama's Economic Recovery Board. And that still doesn't stop the IRS from tearing UBS apart.

  • To my knowledge, the only thing Goldman Sachs is guilty of is "liking money". Not some kind conspiracy theory that GS is trying to take over the world (impossible). In fact, you would be surprised at how little GS know.

GS advised Dun & Bradstreet to give up ACNielsen and Moody's. Bad move by D&B. That's why they moved all their assets to Pictet & Cie. This idea that Rothschild own all the major banks in the world is also bullshit. Trust me. Rothschild has nothing on P&C. They're competitors.

  • i am sure if you told people at gs they didn't own the world it would come as a big surprise to them though. i think if the country were a little less religious we wouldn't be so eager to play the devil card. gs got a major boost with paulson/kashari. it cost a lot so i hope they enjoyed it. i think you are right they did nothing illegal -- the stayed inside government rules which allowed them to do everything they did no matter how stupid.

  • Those were just some totally random organizations I flung out to you. I can name at least 50 more because I KNOW MORE THAN YOU. And if you think Goldman Sachs is evil, then you drank the Alex Jones kool-aid. Goldman Sachs is the least of our worry. You don't really know how this world works, do you?

  • keyboard..finally someone with intellect here. kudos

  • sugarpuddintheinbred..stop copy/pasting honey. it shows an appalling intellect you know? Like sarh failing?

  • get a life, we get it you hate obama with a burning passion, no need to tell us 12 times

  • honor him with some real change in glbt rights! we're still waiting for hate crimes, ENDA, DOMA repeal and DADT repeal... Please show us some of the change you promised us in the campaign!

  • sugarpuddin88 Please, please ask your mother NOT to have sex with her brother again...Imagine how many schizos like you. dellusional paranoids white trailer trash will be there...you know, nothing personal against you but it's widely known ignorance breeds only stupidity. Inbred are NOT cool. get a job and move from the traler already. ok, I'm finish. Go back to play with your dildo

  • get a life.

  • I understand your federally mandated American education was created by Rockefeller & Dewey so that you may become another "passive cog in the wheel of society"

I can tell because anyone educated elsewhere would "debate" rather than limit themselves to uncivilized pejoratives

Why don't you give it a try: Explain the merit of your claim

Try it: See if you can rub together a couple brain cells to create a spark of dialog

  • tnichlsn Take it easy. I am a supporter of glbt rights too but right now this country NEEDS to get health care first and foremost. Peace. He will.
