I was surprised how well the men do dance,I got to see the guys from the balcony at my wedding party. My BIL (15 at the time) and his friends are good.
It is very nice to see men dance the baladi-it is elegant, masculine and absolutely not the standard must of us westerns experience via bellydancing. Having had an Egyptian ex, it is great to see men dance this dance in this style.
I love the culture. The food is amazing, too. I wish the whole world was at Peace so people go travel around and experience other cultures without prejudice.
Love the music. I bet this is one of the boats I went on over there. See what the girl is doing near the end? You only do that when you are WAY out on the Nile, away from prying eyes!!! There's nothing to do there at night though - just ride those boats - and walk around . . . the breeze from the water feels great, though.
There's tons to do at night. You just have to know where to go and have a bit of a budget. I'm in Cairo right now heading over to the boats right now :-)
nice song brought lots of memories back . miss our parties on the street in Egypt and parties on a small boat like that . Yaaah ya Misr, ana moshtaq .
I just wanted to thank you for posting this, Tarik. I find the way the guys in this video dance very inspiring. They seem so free and joyous.
I'm guessing you've seen this already but, in case you've haven't, there's a really cool turkish dancer you can find by looking up "snY1c3DiS44" on youtube. His style is less relaxed, more boisterous than the style exhibited by the men in this video. And it looks equally fun!
Thanks. I've added it to my collection. That is the Turkish style of social dance. It is much more earthy and there's a lot more abdominal movements than Egyptian dance. But you're right, the spirit is very much the same. This is the real spirit of these dances for both the men and women as versus the sexy image we're use to seeing in the media.
There were women also, but they were on the other side of the boat with their families. It would be morally wrong for me to post those videos as Egyptian women are very modest and object strongly to being photoed or videod by strange men. I stoped this clip when I did because the girl almost kicked some guys ass for taking her picture with his cell phone earlier!
In my culture, modern women love men who can dance. They love a man who can samba, salsa, soca and merengue their way into their heart. The old mentality of "real men don't dance" is definitely out. Still Aruban (dutch caribbean) men view as men who love to dance as queers, but it's changing. Most men in my family are excellent dancers and get a lot of female attention (except for me, i'm so stiff).
She's full of crap. ISlam has no position for or against dancing socially at all. There is no such thing as muslim dancing. Each country has its own musical and cultural traditions which are qnique and distinct. It would be like saying Soca is christian music and dance. Give her one Jamaican rass lik fi mi! WhaT NONSENSE.
Thanks man. Any help would be appreciated. I visited Egypt a few years ago and went on one of those cruises (for tourists no doubt) down the Nile where I was fortunate to witness belly dancing in person for the first time, but it was performed by a woman so I had no idea men did it professionally. So I'm glad to learn it isn't a professional exclusively for womaen.
Well honestly, its just recently that men have begun performing in public. They always danced and still do for fun, like this guy. He's just an average joe from the local area. Guys started doing the dramatic version in the US back in the 60's. Now there are guys like Tito in Egypt doing it on syage, so more of us are now dancing in public, not just at home socially.
Awesome video! Glad its out there! People need to know and understand that "bellydance" is not a womans dance and men bellydancing does not mean the men are gay! It means the men are cultural and embrace their heritage! Great dancing too!
Thank you for making this statement. You are absolutely correct. Its really amazing how many Arabs are totally losing their culture to the point where they have no idea that this kind of thing exists. They are totally brainwashed and media fed. They know more about thechno and hip-hop than they do about their own culture. Really sad.
Why's it called "oriental"? Egypt's in Africa (Islam is largest religion there?). Anyways... it's Euro/Western mentality that hip movement in guys looks gay. I'm west african and our dances have alot of hip movements aswell. Ours doesn't look as "femanine" cuz we incorporate more footwork. But whenever we pull o
... when we did an afro dance for school, one part involved more rolling & ticking (tickin the hips). Alot of people thought it was tight, but I remember this white/american guy sayin it was girly. Notice that if guys hold hands in the US its gay; in foerign countries its ok.
The reason is that Western dances are all legs and arms. African dances move every part of the body. Westerners who saw this thought that it was a sexual display and only women are sex objects, so they assumed hip movements are feminine. The Hawaiian Hula had the same problem before they started reasserting their culture. By the way, the dancing from the local areas in Cairo have movements very similar to Congolese dance.
BEcause Egypt is located in the region known as the Middle East to Europeans, the nightclub entertainers started calling the professional dancing performed in the clubs "Oriental", meaning Eastern Dance to differentiate it from the Western ballroom dances that the European entertainers were performing in those clubs as well.
You are right though Egypt is in Africa and you can see that there is a strong relationship between Egyptian movements and other African movements as well.
O yeah dats hilarious..sorry dont use drugzz..az for bellydancin..its onliee for WOMEN and fagets like u..seriously wat the fusk iz wrong with you..wat world did u grow up in..iz dis wat a man does..lookk a little closer
LOL, you are obviously an uneducated person! How can i, or anyone expect you to understand the traditions and ways of other cultures when you can not even spell right?! I feel very sorry for you that you have to go through life with such a narrow and limited mind, it's really a shame! Especialy in a world with so much to offer and so many rich cultures! My sympathies on to you.... Are you a male or female? Where are you from?
no honestly i feel sorry for u..if u dont like the way i spell..well too bad..anyways im not gonna keep arguin over stupid youtube but imma juss say that u simply are one of those people who turn out to be gay..if not u, then ur kids..its idiotic people like u who let shit like this happen..if i wuz there i wouldve been the first to tell him to sit his ass down..
Such a silly little twit you are. Whatever. So young and stupid. !9 and you think you know everything. I've lived your entire life twice, get a life.
First of all, like myself, he's West Indian and we grew up seeing guys move thire hips dancing to Calypso and Reggae all our lives. Second of all, this clip is showing you the REAL dance traditions of Egypt, not fantasy bullshit or nightclub shows. Guys all over the Middle East and Africa dance like this. If you don't know something don't assume, ask questions. There is a lot about the world that you do NOT know. By the way, at the end of the clip the guy's dancing with his girlfriend,
There are 2 reasons 1 women in public are very reserved because its a conservative country 2, I do have footage of the girls dancing, but they have a cow if they see a guy taping them. Out of respect I wont post it since I dont have their permission.
