I love Desslok, but I once absolutley hated him. It was my first experience as a child actually being able to and wanting to forgive someone who was such a apex enemy. in a way, this show taught me that sometimes you should forgive your enemies.
Never will I forget the first time I saw Yamato: New Journey in 1983 at a con in Dallas. Desslok is PISSED that the Dark Nebulans are mining and using up Gamilon while he's been gone and he orders his fleet to follow him to the attack, guns blazing! Me and the rest of the audience are practically on our feet CHEERING. Then I have a moment of "wait-a-minute... I'm cheering Desslok? I'm cheering the -bad- guy??" ... *pause* ... "Oh what the hell... GO DESSLOK!!! DESS-LOK DESSLOKDESSLOK!!!!" ^_^
If it ever to have a english actor to play Desslok it would have to be a young Malcolm Mcdowell. Has a resemblance to Desslok (add the makeup) and his voice is almost on par (check out a Clockwork Orange to compare).
Leader Desslock went kind of nuts after he lost Gamalon. I guess I can't blame him, I would go nuts as well if I lost to a small group of people, and lose ,y planet to them.
Iknow his name is DESSLER , but igrew up watching STAR BLAZERS, and though i have no doubt the original japanese version is better....I will not stop calling him DESSLOK....DESS-LOK DESSLOK DESSLOK !!! DESS-LOK DESSLOK DESSLOK !!!
@AWFULERIKTHERED in some ways, Star blazers is actually better. for instance, in the Japanese First series, the reason Kodai (Wildstar) wants to attack the Gamilon Base on Balan was because the Gamilons murdered some Lizards. in SB, however, he knows the base must be destroyed because they would have to fight it on the way home otherwise. Sorry, but tactical reasoning is better then ecological revenge in this scenario.

@mattmanganon in all honesty, all I've seen from Yamato is Plots about Sacrifice and honor "we must destroy Yamato and kill everyone to bring peace to our people" SB, however, is honest to goodness Sci-Fi action, with a more believable plot line: there's a problem, we need to solve it. i've seen all of both series including the movies, and i feel SB is just better.
I think much of the reason my generation is more drawn to the "honorable villain" is because of characters like Desslok who was a great combination of dramatic charisma, desperation and honor. He really believed in his home and his phrase "As long as I live, Gamelon lives" is equal parts bravado and loyalty to a cause.
Yeah, he was a little crazy but that was part of his charm. In the end, he wanted to save his home and people to the point he would obliterate everyone else.
(cont) the obvious connection is that of the United States in WWII. That the US was so caught up in winning the war and preserving their way of life that they would destroy Japan in the process (do not mistake me: its a poor analogy, but one the Japanese makers of this piece may have given more than just a passing glance to).
In the original version, you see the original Yamado sinking in WWII: the music accompanying the Americans is the SAME music that introduces the Gamelons.
Yeah, Desslock is probably one of my favorite (if not my favorite) movie villans in history. Even though, he's not really a villan about halfway through the series.
You know the scene when Gamilon goes up in flames? What did Starsha do? She pushed a button, and it looked like Iscandar was destroyed, but there was only a flash of light in Desslok's face.
Both of those scenes appear in the movie "New Voyage," but the scene with Starsha appears much later in the movie, not right after Gamilon's destruction.
Starsha decides to sacrafice Iscandar in order to keep the Black Nebula Empire from taking advantage of the planet's resources for the purpose of war.
"Desslok Desslok Desslok!"...I always liked how the Gamalons did that...Still, Desslok, perhaps...no there's no question about it, He is the Greatest of the Insane/Honorable Villains I have seen!
Cool video! You even have the footage of Zordar and his group bringing Desslok back to life. I remembered that scene when I was a kid but the tape from Voyager Entertainment edited it out.
Nice... but, the scene where Desslok and Talan visit the Yamato and he kneels down in respect towards Captain Okita's portrait... what movie/series is that from?
I can't stand a man who laughs at his own jokes.

Desslok, the villain we all loved, until he inspired George Lucas to create Darth Vader! So, why do we love Desslok like we love Vader?

I kind of felt sorry for Desslok in the very end. Plus, for a cartoon character, he was kind of cute...
