I've been driving VW LT 35 for more then two years and I simply loved that van. The 2.5 liter 5-valve turbo-diesel along with great gearbox are nothing but great. For some reason however my employer bought me a brand new Peugeot Boxer. Such a fucking piece of junk! A little bit over 20k kilometers and the ABS is gone, EGR failing... not to mention that the engine's performance is low all together and the whole thing looks and feels like if it was built of paper.
I never drove Boxer but before I bought my LT I did couple of test drives of Relays and other Ducati like vans. As much I don't like German history as I'm Polish I must say that I admire their technology and nothing compares to their cars and vans. I bought my van 4 years ago and only thing I had to change so far was diesel pump. I've crashed it badly once so I can honestly say that it's safe too. Now I brought it from UK to Poland, convert it to LHD and want to use it for maybe 2 years more.
I know what you're talking about, I'm Czech ;) Same for me - as much as I don't like Germany's history, I admire it for it's cars. BMW with it's M-power, Audi Quattro's 'Vorsprung durch Technik' and last but not least VW turbodiesel common rail, these are the things others can only envy...
I've got A8 4,2 Quattro too... This one is real fun :)
My first car was old Audi 80 1.8 from '86 which I bought from my savings 10 years ago when I was 19yo. I loved it! It was stolen (sic!) and thieves crashed it head on to a huge lorry. Both killed instantly ...so very loyal car too :). I've also had Passat 1.8 GT Estate when I started my building business. With 2 step ladders on a roofrack fully loaded with tools it reached 200 km/h. And this was real working horse! :)

Ich bin im Besitz des 7,6 meter langen Crafters als Superhochdach Version. Was ein Schlachtschiff
