The 1980's; the decade of opulence and greed. This show fit. You watched it, and either had two schools of thought: surprise and desire to match that, or envy.
I wonder if anybody in the YouTube community have a taping of the show's closing that features the tune "Champagne Wishes And Caviar Dreams" sung by Dionne Warwick during the credits? This was introduced sometime in the mid to late 80's. I wonder if that tune is on any of her abums from that period, or if it was recorded exclusively for the TV Show.
The theme fits the series perfectly. Lavish, lush and upbeat. Yet, there is a note of sadness in the theme as if Bill is telling us that.. money no matter what the world tells you or what you see, isn't everything. Great show and give my kind regards to Robin..
This song brings back great memories. The very first boner I got was watching an actress called Leann Hunley featured on the Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous. It must have been '89 or '90, and I was 7 or 8 at the time. Hunley (I think she was a regular on Dynasty or the Colbys) was wearing a bathing suit wrapped underneath a "sarong" and the episode was shot in Bali. I couldn't understand why my meat was so huge, but much later I learned about the birds and the bees and human anatomy.Yummy Leann
Bill Conti is so underrated in my eyes. He did alot of great songs for movie and TV. One of my favorite musicians. And this is coming from a guy that likes Classic Rock.
Five Days from Home, starring George Peppard (1978); the theme was done by Bill Conti. That movie song was used on the Robin Leach show.
Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman and George Kennedy (1967); theme was done by Lalo Schifrin; used on many local stations, particularly as the ABC Network O&O "Eyewitness News"
Cool Hand Luke and Five Days from Home have one thing in common: the music in the movies were used as TV show themes; hard news (local news) and soft news (robin leach).
Awesome! I've been looking for this theme for years. It originally was the theme to AM Los Angeles for KABC-TV Channel 7 in the 70's and 80's then became the opening to Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in the mid 80's. But there were cuts of the main theme that weren't part of the show. After the first loop, the funky guitar sound I hadn't heard in years! Thanks so much for posting this.
@dinfg6 Not too long. He's originally from New York and still lives there but briefly in the mid 70's he hosted AM Los Angeles for a year in 1975 while hosting a game show as well called "The Neighbors."
@dinfg6 I believe in 1986 KABC-TV did indeed air LOTRAF on Saturday afternoons around 4 or 5 which was a hour documentary. I think it lasted three seasons. Now of course, this is all from my head. If I researched the material, it would become more detailed.
This has brought back a lot of memories. If you were on this show, you made it. Robin used to stop in town on his private jet to pick up food from his favorite Thai restaurant here and then fly back off to the next exotic location.
LOL, I never knew that Bill Conti did this theme...one of his themes from the 007 movie "For Your Eyes Only" was also used on the show (it's the track called Runaway, it's also here on YouTube)
Despite that Bill Conti took the show's main title from his score from "Five Days From Home", the opening rhythm sounds like it was copied from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' "Tell The Whole World What I Think About Ya Baby", one of the last recordings Teddy Pendergrass did with the group before going solo.
I even remember as a kid when this was the theme to AM Los Angeles from the time when Regis Philbin was doing the show. But KABC kept the theme until early 1985.
I remember the certain segments of the show playing Lonnie Liston's Smith's "Quiet Moments" or "London Interlude" it was one or the other I cannot remeber which..but am not sure if that is the song you are referring to..I use to always tune in to this show..I made me fantasize out of my realities.
@dcxxxx If you're referring to "Runaway With the Rich and Famous" another related show, that theme was called "Runaway", also used in a chase theme in the James Bond movie, "For Your Eyes Only." :)
@dcxxxx I know it's been a year since you posted this question, but the answer is "Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams", and was sung by Dionne Warwick.
the beginning of the realty tv show... and like others just a platform for the publicity agents.. great theme..

As a kid it use to make me feel good and give me hope.
I think between this and dynasty, it kept my curiosity of drugs low and my hope for a better life eternal.
Anyway.. thank you!

Apprpriate song. Appropriate timing; 1980's exaggerated wealth. Great song.

This show was awesome, it put me in a trance as a kid.
It was more motivating and inspiring than new shows, like the vh1's "fabulous life". A couple of favorite segments...
Peter Nygards, Nygard Key in the Bahamas.
Sun City in South Africa.
And some of the other travel segments.
