I saw his Unsung on TVONE and was so heart broken to find out that he was a parnoid schizophrenic. All I knew was that he comitted suicide and hearing his ex wife say that around that time he wasn't taking his meds was so sad. When I hear this song it makes me wonder if he wanted to be free from the pain.
@MissCaramelKitty Being a Manic Depressor myself, I can say from experience you get TIRED POPPING PILLS. But I WANT TO LIVE. So I AM AGREEING W/you on this one. But athe one song that really makes you hear HIS DEPRESSION IS ,"I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW."
@MissCaramelKitty Post civil rights anthem. It was personal to Donny's battles with his own mind, but when I first experienced this song many years ago, back in high school, it was a song I leaned on during some of the hardest times of my life. I guess that's the beauty of a song, in that we can find new meaning in it for ourselves.
@bolder2009 Yes, and along with "Someday", there's Nina Simone's version of "Everything Must Change" (her version is especially moving); Gloria Estefan's "Always Tomorrow", Nina Simone's "YG&B", and to be proud of myself, Nina Simone's "Ain't Got No".....it's sort of like "someday we'll all be free", because "everything must change - nothing stays the same", that's why "there's always tomorrow", which makes me realize I'm "YG&B", and "what I've got; . . I got my freedom, my heart, I’ve got love
I have no idea what this guy went through to leave this legacy.....but every time I hear his name...my heart just skips a beat...because he's still with us..he must be..why else do I sit up until 4am listening to his music....we miss you Donny.xxxxx.
Didnt know he song this until I seen unsung. This captures the basis nature of being black in American. Very Very inspirational. Had to play it 5 times
@mrspatj95 Me too. I know all the version of this...but not this one. Didn't really no his history in our music until I seen unsung. I was a lil broke up at the end too. For my age (32) I know a lot of music.....But did know his .....he is truly a treat
This really is a thing of great beauty, have been a fan of Donny since my boyhood & this song still makes me very emotional 30 years later. A great loss but we still have his amazing music and for that we should be thankful.
Someday we'll all be free. His death (or suicide) was a result of his schizophrenic. A person trapped between reality, his reality and the "world" reality. Yes, a person longs to be "free"
Donny's voice also especially with the slow songs, gives me the creeps, you know that HolyGhost feeling you get when you in church? that's the type of feeling I get when I hear his voice, especially with this song. Is voice is so good, like cotton candy, the warm feeling that comes through from him is like a blanket of arms wrapping around my soul..making me feel so loved. God Bless you Donny..i love you so much. Thank you Jesus for creating Donny and sharing him with the world. Amen.
I believe with ALL my heart that God HIMSELF! used this man and sang right through him, literally sang right through Donny. God definately used Donny for HIS own personal vessel. As if HE (GOD) came straight down to earth to play with us, to have fun with us, and to let us have a little piece of HIMSELF in the flesh to us. Say whatever you want..this my opinion. God Bless you and Thank you for posting cuz....Amen.
He will forever be a Legend and one of my favorite singers I'm 21 but I've always had an old soul I love singers like Maze ft Franky Beverly, Aretha Franklin, The Dramatics, Chaka Khan, Teddy Pendergrass, The O'Jays, Patii LaBelle, and other artist.. Donny Hathaway's music capture this essence and emotional fills like no other with such songs like this giving up, a song for you, the closer i get to you and Little ghetto boy.. I found my self in tears like the first 50 times hearing this R.I.P
Masterpiece! I have always loved this song because of the message it gives but after reading the notes above about how this song came about and Donny's reaction after hearing the final playback, this song has me crying like a baby! To Mr. Edward Howard, the lyricist, Thank you.
Donny Hathaway is REALLY remarkable... I educated myself about true musicians and musicianship, but there was one rock I left unturned... discoverin the fullness of Donny Hathaway. Donny touches me so much cuz he reminds me so much of David Ruffin as far as the heartfelt passion displayed in his vocals are concerned. it's a shame artists don't make music like this anymore. Rest in peace Donny.

wow listening to this song made me cry. with Donny Hathaway's beautiful voice and those incredible lyrics, it can't help but reach down deep into your soul and touch it.
once in a while a life touches us/ we stop in our haste/ take in the light/ moved in our stillness/ we long, like they do/ for the freedom that is true/ their hunger hits our gut and expose our wanting state/ Donny Hathaway/ James Baldwin/ Miles/ Ralph Ellison/ and others/ we are ever thankful to the Almighty/ For sending them our way/ We are richer for it/ we find our being in Him/ the Author and the Finisher of our earthly struggle/ xolinorman

the people who love are afflicted with sadness and broken hearts..i can hear the universal sorrow for the state we are in as human beings.. it runs through his songs..but his voice confirms hope and soothes
I think he is the most sophisticated singer of all time. He was actually talking about issues at that time. The only sing that is like Donny Hathaway is Donny Hathaway . And I feel sorry for the 13 people disliking this.
Im only 24 and I JUST seriously started listening to him a few days ago... and his music has literally consumed me. I whole heatedly believe that vocally Donny Hathaway can be touched by few if any. He is nothing short than amazing and was ahead of his time. Songs like this and "Giving up" shock me because of his ever present talent and emotion that cant even be imitated by an artist today, & saddens me bc he was gone all too soon, along w/ Sam Cook & Marvin Gaye. BS artists... LEARN from them!
Hi I just have to say that although I'm an 80s baby I was raised on the classics every Saturday my parents would play records (Yes records) and there was always some Donny, some Stevie, and the rest of those soulful voices. I feel in love with the sounds of Donny Hathaway and just love his songs they inspire and uplift.
This song is so amazing; the lyrics were great as was his voice but the arrangement, especially the horns left me speechless. I come close to tears constantly when I hear this. He was gone way too soon. We miss you Donny:(
The first time I heard this song was during the credits of the movie, "Malcolm X". Ashamed that I never heard Donny's recording of this awesome, emotional and heart moving song, the message and the music brought out in me an emotion I'll never forget. I've been trying to find the sheet music to it with no results. Can anyone help me here in my search to locate it. I'd like to play it for a friend's family reunion. Thanks.
This soulful and truly spiritual tune song by the legendary and late...
DONNY HATHAWAY is for each one of us who are looking for comfort and solace during difficult times. It reminds me of the healing that I receive when I read Psalm 23.
@CMARIE hold on, and keep ya head up. Your emotions are not isolated ones. Many feel them daily. Each second you breath is a blessing to those around you. Wherever you reside, just know your life counts, even though billions walk the earth.
@CMarieSanders It may sound like judgment when people criticize the way in which he left this world. I believe it is more pain from losing a friend or loved one from the people that knew him, or just pain from losing a musical talent as powerful and strong as it was from fans of his work. The same that I am sure people think of you if decided to leave this world as a result of your own making. You are not alone in the way you feel. If it is your loved ones, that keep you motivated, use that.
@gropegrape I'm right there with ya Bro. I shed a tear that brilliant brothers like Hathaway can't find away out of their troubles and leave the ones that love them behind. [PEACE BE UNTO YOU.]
I got all of Donny's records and every time I put one on I swear to the good creator above it's like hearing it for the first time.. Incredible song..
beautiful. well done. i love this song and i am onlyy 11. but this is very remarkible and powerful. nice i mean wonderful job. i did a praise dance to this. but it could not match the powerfulness of this song. thank you donny hathaway.
I find it interesting that this song is remembered as some sort of Civil Rights anthem (due to the Spike Lee movie about Malcolm X), yet the song and the 'freedom' Donny is talking about is actually freedom from his own mental struggles and depression.
This song was made during the civil rights movement I miss those days when we all worked together for a cause. I think these days we seem to take a lot for grated.
He was an amazing artist and I am so glad he left such beautiful music behind for us to listen to over and over again. He wasn't troubled as much as he had a mental illness. He was scizophrenic (sp?). My heart broke for him and the torture he endured and still managed to use the gift that God gave him. Wow....
A genuine classic, Timeless music like this will never die and even though Donny is no longer with us it is music like this that will continue to have his memory live on for future generation. His daughter Lalah will be in the same category gifted singer.

@usermel1273: Ignore those attention seekers....they only come here and select the dislike button to get a reaction out of ppl....because more then likely they are of very low self-esteem.....bottom line is,if they really don't like it why did they come here and if they did so by mistake then why did they stay here? Some ppl are ignored by everybody in their life and being neg about everything is how they get noticed. For some ppl neg attention is better then none at all.
unfortunatly donny found his freedom early, in a way that is disturbing and tragic. what donny stood for is a natural musical style that never wavered in its ability to make us better. music does that, brings out the better side of us, the humanitiy seeps through.
we need to use his message as a calling, a call for peace and harmony.
From Tokyo, Japan. I listen to this song over and over again. Keep on walking' tall, hold your head up high, sing your brave song, you keep growing, growing on.
Any day is a good day to discover Donny Hathaway.... I just wish more people would open their ears and realize that the music we are been belt fed in 2011 is nothing more than a bi-product of the greed that is gripping the world today. Those of us who love the likes of Hathaway, Vandross, Warwick, Knight, Womack, Felder, Franklin, Ross, Jarreau, Benson, Holloway, Labelle, Gaye, Cooke and other of that generation, should spread the word.... Music is the Key
You know, A. Keys sang this a couple days after 9/11 and knocked it out of the park ...but this original is pretty sweet, pretty necessary, right about now, too ...
"Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out." Edward Howard, lyricist of the song, adds, "It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny. He was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him.
@havewhatiwant I either cry or am filled with hope when hearing this myself. So I can imagine his tears when hearing this. This cat was a genius, hands up, down and all around.
YES......

once in a while a life touches us/ we stop in our haste/ take in the light/ moved in our stillness/ we long, like they do/ for the freedom that is true/ their hunger hits our gut and expose our wanting state/ Donny Hathaway/ James Baldwin/ Miles/ Ralph Ellison/ and others/ we are ever thankful to the Almighty/ For sending them our way/ We are richer for it/ we find our being in Him/ the Author and the Finisher of our earthly struggle/ xolinorman

the people who love are afflicted with sadness and broken hearts..i can hear the universal sorrow for the state we are in as human beings.. it runs through his songs..but his voice confirms hope and soothes

I think he is the most sophisticated singer of all time. He was actually talking about issues at that time. The only sing that is like Donny Hathaway is Donny Hathaway . And I feel sorry for the 13 people disliking this.

How much do you have to hate yourself to "dislike" this? Seriously.

Thanks.

Peace and Love.

I find it interesting that this song is remembered as some sort of Civil Rights anthem (due to the Spike Lee movie about Malcolm X), yet the song and the 'freedom' Donny is talking about is actually freedom from his own mental struggles and depression.

He was an amazing artist and I am so glad he left such beautiful music behind for us to listen to over and over again. He wasn't troubled as much as he had a mental illness. He was scizophrenic (sp?). My heart broke for him and the torture he endured and still managed to use the gift that God gave him. Wow....

READY4REVELATION 9 months ago 4
unfortunatly donny found his freedom early, in a way that is disturbing and tragic. what donny stood for is a natural musical style that never wavered in its ability to make us better. music does that, brings out the better side of us, the humanitiy seeps through.
we need to use his message as a calling, a call for peace and harmony.

First time i heard this song, it was in the Malcolm X film, covered by Aretha Franklin, i had no idea Donny Hathaway made this song, pure genius!!!
sn00per8 11 months ago
"Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out." Edward Howard, lyricist of the song, adds, "It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny. He was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him.
havewhatiwant 11 months ago 55
@havewhatiwant I either cry or am filled with hope when hearing this myself. So I can imagine his tears when hearing this. This cat was a genius, hands up, down and all around.
