I’m 17 & have been playing cello for 6 years. Like everyone else, I have a dream-to be the next Yo-Yo Ma. I have a long way to go but it would be great to have some professional advice from fellow musicians so I can improve. So if anyone can take a few minutes to check out my videos, I would greatly appreciate it
@crazycelloful which genre? classical, baroque, romantic, contemporary??? whos your favorite composer? do you prefer slow musical pieces with rubato or fast very temporate pieces??? you are being very vague sir. ;)... btw im 14.
@jigglypugz Classical and romantic. The speed would depend on the composer. I enjoy Beethoven's fury in his faster piano sonatas, but I also love the slow enchanting feel of Rachmaninoff... Contemporary music seems very random... Maybe I just cant comprehend the musicality of it.
@sibeliusviolinc It certainly isn't a competition.... I and hundreds of thousands of others started listening to classical music before I could read, being young and into classical isn't a unique thing. ;-)
(That isn't to say that you SHOULDN'T be into classical music, though)
@1219GreenChristine, I agree. I played this piece some 15 years ago for my diploma, of course, not nearly as good as Yo-Yo Ma. 2:21- 2:37 was a craziness. Good luck with it! ;-)
I don't agree with those people who tell others to not write anything negative. While nobody should write anything obscene or that is simply bashing Yo-Yo, these videos can stimulate great conversation about musical interpretation. Listen, enjoy, and critique if you want. :)
even fools are entitled to their comments. Yo Yo Ma is one of the greatest musicians of our time. All those negative comments are laughable and just show how many fools we have out there.
if you are going to write comments that are negative towards this piece, then just don't. These pieces of music are online to be enjoyed. If you like another interpretation better than go and post on that video about how much you love it. Please just save everybody else from having to deal with these comments and leave them to enjoy the video if they'd like to.
@4K88 : you're absolutely right about the "too this or that thingy! This is how he hears and feels it PLUS the conductor seems to agree (or vice versa ha-ha) because none is exactly chasing the other ... of course everybody's entitled to disagree and change channel - but that doesn't make Yo-Yo Ma "wrong"
It's really beautiful. You people should be appreciating this more than criticizing it. Yo Yo Ma is a great artist and creates his own interpretation of the piece. If you have complaints, learn the song yourself and play it the way you like it. Otherwise, just enjoy it.
actually most people play it slower than this, and besides, its my target for speed. besides the orchestra is fast enough and they play in a large group (strings and woodwinds and timpani), so i wouldn't complain if i were u
can u play the artificial harmonics in 1-3? my cello's strongs arent good enough to produce the right tone but i can do it

Music is a way to speak. This is how he chooses to speak. You might not like his accent, but it doesn't mean that you can't appreciate the message :)

Ummm..if you'd try to play one part really fast, then you wouldn't make it (I'm playing this piece).
Yes I know there are other people who play it faster, but they want it to be fast.
It's their opinion.
