In the 80's Shuttle seemed like Shuttle was right out of a Scifi show and looked great on TV. I only wished it lived up to its promise of low cost. It was promised to be be 50 million p/flight and we would have 50 launches per year. It ended up costing 1.6 Billion per flight over 32 times more that promised. Shame on US citizens for letting it continue after the 5th flight. Some people even called Shuttle a welfare program. Privatization of Space vehicles will help costs in the future.

Young and Crippen had guts. Just think, the shuttle had never been launched before. Every spacecraft before that time had been launched and tested unmanned, on a rocket that had been launch tested and proven. Not the shuttle, the first manned flight was the first flight. There had been system tests of course, but not a full up test. Also, I bet the shuttle was pretty roomy with only two astronauts on board.

so wiki says the billowing smoke at launch is caused by dumping water to dampen noise, but that didn't happen until AFTER STS-1. Guess the difference in the amount of smoke is barely noticeable. Is that true?

This should have been the only Shuttle flight. We showed reusable flight at STS-1. Shuttle ended up being a huge drain on recourses and has held the US behind in achievement for 25 years. What a waist of time, money, and tragic loss of 14 human lives. If we had used disposable rockets like an upgraded Gemini. We could have already been to Mars and beyond. Thank God for SpaceX.

i must disagree with the last comment posted. it is human nature to push the limits. young and crippen got on that shuttle knowing it had never been tested in a launch. these are folks that do what they love. nobody makes them do it. money? yes very expensive. but you can't tell me we have not gained from the shuttles voyages. as far as a needless waste of human life... there is risk in any task as great as these folks have dedicated them selves to do. they are like any pioneer who as ever been
They proved reusable flights after STS-1. They should have stopped after the maiden flight. Shuttle ended up being a huge drain on resources at 1.6 billion per launch and needless waist of human life. Shuttle had no escape system and humans should never be put on a rocket with solid rocket fuel. A winged shape craft is is not a good design for atmospheric re-entry. Luckily, the Falcon9 rocket will be its replacement and its looking like the safest rocket ever created for human travel.
@3rkid2 2/134 is not a bad record for a satellite delivery system. However, 2/134 is really really bad when people are involved (in this case 14 deaths). I realize Russia had some deaths in the back in 1967 and 1971when developing a new system. Also the Russian deaths by a ventilation valve and parachute failure, not by a major hardware design failure like shuttle and certainly nothing past 1972.
2/135 is decent when you're reusing the most complex machine ever built in history. The Apollo program had a really shitty record in comparison. The first one ended in three fatalities, and one was almost lost in space.
@3rkid2 (they have not had the 135th flight yet). The Shuttle's complexity makes it also the most dangerous manned vehicle in history. SRB,s should never be used with people and we were warned by Von Braun not to use SRB's. The lack of an escape system is not good. The position of crew cabin parallel with the main tank is not good. A winged shaped craft is not an ideal shape in re-entry. Basically, landing like an airplane in the 20 seconds of flight is not worth the cost.

My understanding is that the center tank was left unpainted in all subsequent launches in an effort to save weight. It took 800 pounds of paint to cover it. If you get the chance to tour the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex and take the tour, by all means do it. Very exciting stuff... they do America proud!

@tackN2Wind I'd say it had more to do with most video back then being stored in analogue on magnetic tape which loses a lot of quality. Film is/was much better.... just look at some of the films from middle of last century that have been released on Blu-Ray and look almost as good as a modern day film quality wise (some with "digital enhancement/remastering").

Can anyone tell me if there was the same level of ice cracking off the first few shuttle flights which had painted tanks rather than later with the unpainted ones. Ive always wondered if Columbia could have been avoided if the tank was still painted and less ice fell away? Was it the same or was it more unpainted with the foam exposed.
@DumbYankies The only reason they stopped painting the tank was it saved alot of weight. The problem with columbia was a briefcase sized foam fell off, not ice, that caused the deadly breach on the wing. They still had alot foam loss even with the paint on it so it would not have made any difference.
I had forgotten that ... the Astronauts on Apollo and Shuttle went out to the launch pad in a modified Clark Cortez motorhome. They used it because it was a unitized body with no chassis so it was easy to get into while they were in their space suits.
We still have one of those motorhomes. Bought the thing in 1962.

In the 80's Shuttle seemed like Shuttle was right out of a Scifi show and looked great on TV. I only wished it lived up to its promise of low cost. It was promised to be be 50 million p/flight and we would have 50 launches per year. It ended up costing 1.6 Billion per flight over 32 times more that promised. Shame on US citizens for letting it continue after the 5th flight. Some people even called Shuttle a welfare program. Privatization of Space vehicles will help costs in the future.

Young and Crippen had guts. Just think, the shuttle had never been launched before. Every spacecraft before that time had been launched and tested unmanned, on a rocket that had been launch tested and proven. Not the shuttle, the first manned flight was the first flight. There had been system tests of course, but not a full up test. Also, I bet the shuttle was pretty roomy with only two astronauts on board.

"Scalded Cat" was the most memorable description I recall of the alacrity of Columbia's inaugural launch in 1981. This space ship performed like nothing ever seen, and KUDOs are forever due to Young and Crippen for risking their lives on a machine with an almost entirely untested performance.
BTW, only after the tragic results of Challenger's launch on the 25th mission, were launch photography available in HD.

This should have been the only Shuttle flight. We showed reusable flight at STS-1. Shuttle ended up being a huge drain on recourses and has held the US behind in achievement for 25 years. What a waist of time, money, and tragic loss of 14 human lives. If we had used disposable rockets like an upgraded Gemini. We could have already been to Mars and beyond. Thank God for SpaceX.

I was camping with my parents and brother/sisters at Jetty Park that week which allowed us great seats (on the rocks-along the jetty). I plan on going back for the final launch. i must disagree with the last comment posted. it is human nature to push the limits. young and crippen got on that shuttle knowing it had never been tested in a launch. these are folks that do what they love. nobody makes them do it. money? yes very expensive. but you can't tell me we have not gained from the shuttles voyages. as far as a needless waste of human life... there is risk in any task as great as these folks have dedicated them selves to do. they are like any pioneer who as ever been

They proved reusable flights after STS-1. They should have stopped after the maiden flight. Shuttle ended up being a huge drain on resources at 1.6 billion per launch and needless waist of human life. Shuttle had no escape system and humans should never be put on a rocket with solid rocket fuel. A winged shape craft is is not a good design for atmospheric re-entry. Luckily, the Falcon9 rocket will be its replacement and its looking like the safest rocket ever created for human travel.

@3rkid2 2/134 is not a bad record for a satellite delivery system. However, 2/134 is really really bad when people are involved (in this case 14 deaths). I realize Russia had some deaths in the back in 1967 and 1971when developing a new system. Also the Russian deaths by a ventilation valve and parachute failure, not by a major hardware design failure like shuttle and certainly nothing past 1972.

2/135 is decent when you're reusing the most complex machine ever built in history. The Apollo program had a really shitty record in comparison. The first one ended in three fatalities, and one was almost lost in space.

@3rkid2 (they have not had the 135th flight yet). The Shuttle's complexity makes it also the most dangerous manned vehicle in history. SRB,s should never be used with people and we were warned by Von Braun not to use SRB's. The lack of an escape system is not good. The position of crew cabin parallel with the main tank is not good. A winged shaped craft is not an ideal shape in re-entry. Basically, landing like an airplane in the 20 seconds of flight is not worth the cost.

My understanding is that the center tank was left unpainted in all subsequent launches in an effort to save weight. It took 800 pounds of paint to cover it. If you get the chance to tour the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex and take the tour, by all means do it. Very exciting stuff... they do America proud!

@tackN2Wind I'd say it had more to do with most video back then being stored in analogue on magnetic tape which loses a lot of quality. Film is/was much better.... just look at some of the films from middle of last century that have been released on Blu-Ray and look almost as good as a modern day film quality wise (some with "digital enhancement/remastering").

I had thinked a proposal of realization to one universal vehicle, good on Earth but and in Cosmos. Can anyone tell me if there was the same level of ice cracking off the first few shuttle flights which had painted tanks rather than later with the unpainted ones. Ive always wondered if Columbia could have been avoided if the tank was still painted and less ice fell away? Was it the same or was it more unpainted with the foam exposed.

@DumbYankies The only reason they stopped painting the tank was it saved alot of weight. The problem with columbia was a briefcase sized foam fell off, not ice, that caused the deadly breach on the wing. They still had alot foam loss even with the paint on it so it would not have made any difference.

I had forgotten that ... the Astronauts on Apollo and Shuttle went out to the launch pad in a modified Clark Cortez motorhome. They used it because it was a unitized body with no chassis so it was easy to get into while they were in their space suits.
We still have one of those motorhomes. Bought the thing in 1962.
