  • Isn't that a backslash?

  • these pinheads are disgusting. this is what trotsky had in store for the russian people."We should turn Her (Russia) into a desert populated with white Niggers. We will impose upon them such a tyranny that was never dreamt by the most hideous despots of the East. The peculiar trait of that tyranny is that it will be enacted from the left rather than the right and it will be red rather than white in color.

  • agreed with the previous two comments

  • You know why the west loves Leon Trotsky, its because he fits into their neo-liberal revisionist bull shit. He was a counter revolutionary and nothing more.

  • @ooohpie Hey there, stalinist. I find it greatly ironic, how the Totalitarian dictators your support(Moa, Stalin, Pol pot, etc), called themselves ''communists'' and 'socialists'', yet, after each respective revolution, dedicated themselves to discrediting this ideology, resulting with it being looked upon with contempt by the majority of the masses, and rightfully so.

Have fun master-bating over dictators to fulfil your masochistic tendencies, and of course, have fun denying reality.

  • @Incognitoification1 thankyou! i hate Stalinists

  • @ooohpie @ooohpie "The West"?.... by that do you mean "The Educated"?....

Because your a random faceless Youtuber who goes by the name ooohpie (Which is obviously a sign of intelligence and maturity /sarcasm) and then give an opinion based on no research or scientific fact and expect people to take it...

    *Facepalms*

There's just so much stupidity it's not even worth going into it....

  • revisionist garbge

  • @darkillity True, the good interviewer allow people to talk.

  • IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THE INTERVIEWER WOULDN'T KEEP INTERRUPTING THE 2 NICE GENTLEMEN HE INVITED TO HEAR THEIR VIEWS ON THE MATTER. Unbelievable.

  • In my opinion. The moment this "discussion" started. Peter Robinson already set his ears to listen to Service. I really think he's bias.

  • Harold Camping was RIGHT about May 21, click on my channel to see...

  • Service is a joke, he should come down from his ivory tower and explain to the people fighting in the streets of Greece why figures like Trotsky are "not good for anybody."

  • @AndrewMann552 a wonderful comment brother...i send you my respect from Greece....

  • @AndrewMann552 They were not debating that, were they? Service pointed out that the Left's image of Trotsky is a rather romantic one since his political opinions on repression and war were very similar to Stalin's.

Whether you think troskyism/stalinism should rule the streets of Greece right now is another matter.

  • @xgnothixseautonx What a stupid post

  • Such a Shame of distorted history, They don't even mention how the Bolshevik revolution was created by the international bankers to be a anti-thesis of capitalism.

Suggest those interested could view a few videos of Anthony Sutton and Carrol Quigley. If rating were enabled; NEGITIVE

  • @letsgomd What?????

  • The American Historical Review, among the oldest and most prestigious academic journals in the United States, has condemned Service’s biography of Trotsky, saying that it "fails to meet the basic standards of historical scholarship". The review has explicitly endorsed the critique of Service's book by David North, the chairman of both the Socialist Equality Party in the United States and the international editorial board of the World Socialist Web Site.

  • Trotskyism and Stalinism are one in the same. The 'differences' are aesthetic.

  • Snowball ftw!

  • 27:10 wiki/Polar_Bear_Expedition

  • There is a fundemental principle, the Non-Aggression Principle. You can not coerce(especially based on lies) people to doing something you want them to, no matter what the issue. There is no dictatorship on earth, or has ever been, based on a more false premise than that. If you are opposed to Kim Jong-Il, Raul Castro, Saddam Hussein, etc, go fund and fight the opposition yourself. Hitchens is a coercive, rotund, Trotskyite tool, whom does not understand this.

  • @qwertypoiu4321 I partially agree with that statement. I understand what you mean thou we (the ppl) have the power to not follow the leader. However, when you have the military on your side, fear tatics and indoctrination that goes out the window.

  • This Service guy is obviously trying to defame Trotsky in devious ways. Too bad Hitchens was too drunk or nonchalant in this video to attack him back.

  • Why is the Hoover Institute hosting a discussion about Leon Trotsky?

The Hoover Institute (along with the Heritage Foundation, Marshall Institute, etc) is one the most conservative/right-wing think tank/institutions in America.

  • @bapyou

Because they realize that to understand one's own position, one must understand one's opponent's position equally.

  • @bapyou It's called a debate. No matter what views represent your mind, one must admit that Trotsky is a very relevant historical figure.

  • - To hell with the Vanguardists and the betrayers of the February/workers' revolution! If only Kerensky had stayed in power for a longer time and ended the damn war, Russia would have had a Socialist party AND a democracy!

  • Thankfully, the archives of the Soviet Union are now open. No more nonsense concerning Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin.

Read a history book written after 1991, people.

  • @a199215 Even these books aren't reliable. Service claims his books are based on the Soviet archives and yet his material is incredibly biased

  • Had Trotsky gained the position of being the vanguard of the proletariat, we would be sitting here discussing how much better the soviet union would have been "If only had Stalin gained power"

  • Very interesting discussion. I love watching Hitchens debate, but it's nice to see him having more of a discussion.

  • I really like Hitchens, but I am so dissapointed over the fact that he speak highly of Trotsky (even though he does it so cleverly)

  • @hafnia28 If that is the case, then why on earth do you really like Hitchens? He has always been a dedicated Trotskyist above all else, because he's considered the issue thoroughly and come to the salient and humanitarian conclusion of real socialism, and he realizes the importance of supporting it. do you only support his atheist views I imagine?

  • Wonderful debate. I enjoy listening to civil discussion about such a controversial topic as opposed to the personal attacks on most of the YouTube comment debates.

  • Chris is really ill in hospital right now. Good thoughts going out to him and his well being and health.

  • Long live Stalin!

  • People of that... Kidney?

  • Service's book is a joke when compared with isaac Detscher's 3-vol masterpiece.

  • anyone else catch that at 24:51?

    "even if extended by bayonets."

so subtle. great line Mr. Hitchens!

  • It just seems to me conservative analysts have more of a predilection for speculation- quickly confusing it for fact. It all sounds so serious and scholarly; maybe it's the suits, the small glasses and the faked interested look in the eyes...

  • Service's book is a demolition job on Trotsky. Service can't even get his fact right in some places in the book - dates, persons, etc. Astonishing!

Isaac Deutscher's 3-volume biography of Trotsky is still the best.

  • I'm glad this interview isn't about religion. I'm tired of hearing all sides of it for now.

  • @iago201 I agree hitchens is such a smart fella, THere are some great videos of him on yt some of the are about current affairs in the 90s if your interested and there are a few on the founding fathers

  • He champions the facilitating of U.N. expeditionary forces, on the Thomas Woodrow Wilson's war model of 1918, to police the globe. Hitchens is anti-Republic, anti-free speech. He yearns for a world mirroring Orwell's opus "1984" where-at the State controls the flow of information. Non-readers are oblivious to the hatchet job Hitch did on Thomas Jefferson as our centralized, counterfeited currency consistently counts as capital.

  • Great discussion.

I get the feeling that Service would have indeed been at the service of the Whites if he were alive then. Makes me not really want to read his book.

Now if Hitchens were to write a biography of Trotsky . . . ;D

  • Oh Hitch, still a straight shooter! Love that guy.

  • hmm, interesting. Thanks for posting.

Too bad Trotsky was killed, would have been interesting to have his take on more thiings.,,

  • This is a load of garbage. Service just keeps spewing ugly smear without providing any justification for it.

Why not have a Marxist on to debate the pro-Trotsky side?

  • @MikhailSilverwood (have you noticed Hitchens is very much pro-Trotsky?)

  • Thanks for uploading this. Quite interesting.

  • Remember Kronstadt

  • Trotsky does deserve kudos for getting Hitler right (& not just because he was, as it were, a rabid "anti-communist" from the beginning.

  • I think this is a pretty measured (& intersting & entertaining) discussion considering it took place under the auspices of the Hoover Institution, which is ideologically conservative (some say Neo-conservative). I think Service (& Hitchens seems to concede this) is right that Trotsky gets a pass for a number of reasons, the first being that Stalin was such a monster. I think its fair to suggest that Trotsky would have been problematic in his own ways ...

  • lol Trotsky

  • Fantastic discussion. Thanks to the Hoover Institution for posting.

  • Does the Host not know the term is Trotskyite?

  • @geezzerboy Trotskyite is a derogatory term used by Stalinists. People who side with Trotsky much prefer to be called Trotskyists.

  • It's far more interesting to listen to Hitchens talk about something he has some history and knowledge of rather than debating "How liberals are abolishing Christmas" or some other such rubbish on Fox.

  • Robert Service is re-writting history and telling lies about Leon Trotsky

  • @IanLittle123 He tells lies for a living, just like Hitchens.

  • @binhthanhvo

    elaborate?

  • Robert Service coming out with more pro capitalist bullshit.

He's afraid and refused to dabate with people who really know about Marx and Trotsky and get his bullshit exposed for what it really is.

Come on Robert... come and debate with the Socialist Party in the UK... or anywhere else you choose.

  • I love Hitchens and Service is just not as smart or charismatic Hitchens.

  • Service is an awful bore. Read his book and you can imagine him there, dressed as a priest, ranting and raving.
