69elko is correct. Im a Suzuki fan in every way. But the truth is on the track(cornering especially) the R1 is just to nasty. Which is because of its mid range stank! This is the only bike i would own over mine.(2008 gsx-r 600 white.)
You guys don't realize that peak horsepower doesn't mean anything if it isn't useable. On a 1000cc bike that is the problem, it is hard to control in corners. That is why yamaha made the 2009 R1. The corners are what matter in a race, if you can take the corner faster you can come out faster and still win on the straight away.

Probably go with TwoBros but worried about overheating, do you have any problems with it? Did you have to get it Map'd? Has anyone put a power commander or a Juice box on yet?
I have the Two Brothers and if thats all ya gonna add ya do not need a map ... it'll run just fine and no need to worry about over heatin' ... NOW ... since ya can't spend 2 grand on a full exhaust you CAN get the Two Bros and the LeoVince mid pipe and that'll run ya less then 1 grand ... it's what I done and I love it !
some people are faster with more top end rush power and some like more umph in the mid range of the rpm band. just what works for you that counts. the new r1 has more power i believe at 9 k than the rest of the liter bikes . i just read a compare and contrast on a long airplane ride and they had dyno sheets for the big four. they all very close to the same peak hp. the honda i remember had the highest top speed. i think yama had the best 0 to 100 .

A HP boast is what the manufacturers sell their bikes on. If nobody cared about having a faster bike than the next guy everyone would be riding mopeds. LOL To each his own for sure. I used to have a Yamaha myself, but I just like my CBR better. Nothing against Yamaha, but I just thought it would put out more power considering all the rave about this bike.
Once again, it's not about how much power it makes, it's the way in which the power is produced that counts. With this new motor, you can pile the power on much earlier that the blade. Furthermore, the motor generates torque much more efficiently so it doesn't need as much torque or power as the blade. This is why on the dyno it seems peaky and gutless, but on the road it feels like a 1098 in the way that it out grunts the opposition.
So it is smother, so what. It drives like a twin because of the cross place crank. It all comes down to the rider anyways. The best bike in the world can't make the worst rider good. Like I said earlier, ossi makes Yamaha look dam good! I used to have one, and I prefer the Honda's power, as it fits my riding style. I sat on the new R1 and it feels like a tank compared to my 1000rr!

if its your first bike dont get the r1 cuz i has 1000cc 250cc is recommended for "noobs" idk how many ccs the GSX but if its over 600 i dont recommend it as a first bike
Manufacturer claimed horsepower numbers are usually measured at the crankshaft. Chassis dynos (which measure rear wheel horsepower) will always be lower because of drivetrain loss. So, all of the numbers are right, but the chassis dyno numbers are what's actually getting to the ground.
Im still trying to figure out who to believe. Ive seen two brothers dyno and graves dyno saying the 09 R1 with their exhaust pushing a lil over 150hp, yet everything else i read on the R1 claims it to be stock 180hp
Dude ... this is a 2009 Yamaha R-1 and the exhaust comes out under the seat from the factory ... the 2009 Yamaha R-6 comes out the side from the factory ;)
Not a problem ... of the big 4 bike manufactures the Yamaha litre bike is the ONLY one that kept the exhaust under the seat ... Suzuki,Honda and Kawasaki all litre bikes are out the side ... I have the 2009 R-1 and this exhaust and it sounds just like ya hear ... BIG and BAD !
the exhaust on the outside is def. horrible looking, that's why I got love for the Y, they know what they're doing. The new r1 is real nice looking but it looks way too short, maybe i gotta take a closer look at them at the store, maybe ill like them. Yes the rear of the bike does look rather short but it grows on ya ... I haven't been pulled yet for the sound BUT I have had several stare hard ... so I decided to put the silencers in :/
How do you run a dyno? I know you take it from idle in 5th to red line and back down but I've seen others in diff gears and such, what's the pattern of it/ or the point?
the idea is to do roll-on runs (the ones you see posted on websites for top hp numbers a lot) in whatever gear is closest to 1:1 ratio, which on bikes is 4th gear. not from idle, but just above, maybe 3.5k rpm.
Its obvious really that most of the people like the looks of the bike, 99% of people love the sound of the bike and the people who matter who have ridden the bike don't have a bad word to say about it..
. As for the looks of it ,like all new models every new generation takes some gettin used to, then once your used to seein it it nearly always becomes fovourite over the old one...No dowt with a few tasty extras you can make the standard bike look alot better...

You know, how an engine makes its power does affect the dyno results. You may not believe this but I have seen engines that accelerate seconds faster through a gear but turn out lower numbers.
The 09 r1 has less than 04-06 model (not mentioning the competition like gsxr and zx10). This whole fireing interval is one big stupid commercial slogan. If I want a bike which has a low power and sound different I would definietely choose a V-Twin over this shit

you are right, when I first saw this bike I was all about it, oh yeah 09 r1, then I started to compare the numbers and I got a 09 zx10. Fireing interval cant beat the fastest production bike ever can it? The answer is no if you are still thinking about it. A side note, the 09 r1 is still an awesome bike and it sounds amazing, but I decided to go with more power than sound or low end torque, if I need torque I will just ride where I have it, no use in riding in 3 and 4k r's, wind it out.
This four cylinder will cure my addiction for v8s, sounds just like one. Yes, a Miata with one of these crossplane cranks would cure my Hemi addiction.
Someday, if Yamaha doesen't already have a patent on this "crossplane crank on an inline four" technology, it would be nice on a light little roadster like a miata. If any enthusiastic American engineers are reading this, lets beat the German's and Jap's to it why don't we.

RPM24: My bone stock 2009 R1 made 163 to the tire on the dyno. Any 09 R1 that makes 146hp shows there is something wrong!

its not a v8 engine. Its a crossplane crank 4 cylinder engine. The crossplane crank utilizes the same design as a 90 degree v8 engine.

Not a problem ... of the big 4 bike manufactures the Yamaha litre bike is the ONLY one that kept the exhaust under the seat ... Suzuki,Honda and Kawasaki all litre bikes are out the side ... I have the 2009 R-1 and this exhaust and it sounds just like ya hear ... BIG and BAD !

the exhaust on the outside is def. horrible looking, that's why I got love for the Y, they know what they're doing. The new r1 is real nice looking but it looks way too short, maybe i gotta take a closer look at them at the store, maybe ill like them. But i got a question, do you get pulled over alot? even when you're not speeding? i want the 04-07 r1 but the cops where i live are just too racist to let a brazilian guy go without some cuffs.

Yes the rear of the bike does look rather short but it grows on ya ... I haven't been pulled yet for the sound BUT I have had several stare hard ... so I decided to put the silencers in :/

How do you run a dyno? I know you take it from idle in 5th to red line and back down but I've seen others in diff gears and such, what's the pattern of it/ or the point?

the idea is to do roll-on runs (the ones you see posted on websites for top hp numbers a lot) in whatever gear is closest to 1:1 ratio, which on bikes is 4th gear. not from idle, but just above, maybe 3.5k rpm.

Its obvious really that most of the people like the looks of the bike, 99% of people love the sound of the bike and the people who matter who have ridden the bike don't have a bad word to say about it..
. As for the looks of it ,like all new models every new generation takes some gettin used to, then once your used to seein it it nearly always becomes fovourite over the old one...No dowt with a few tasty extras you can make the standard bike look alot better...

I'm a Honda guy myself, I have the VTR1000 SP2 (or RC51 depending on which country you are in)... I love the sound of the twins.
However... This may be the bike that wins me back to the inline 4. I'm amazed at how good it sounds, just wish it didn't have the bug eyes...!
Now... What can I sell to give me enough money to buy one?! Anyone want to buy one of my kids? :-)

way over 20 huh? im comparing the r1 to the other jap 1000's. if you can please tell me where your getting your info from. the r1 is in the low 150 range rwhp. are you saying the zx 10 and gsxr1000 are making over 170 at the rear wheel.. everything ive seen and read puts them both right at 160 rwhp... about the rossi thing.. yamaha won the constructors championship, fiat won the team championship and 3 of the 4 riders finished in the top 10 two of them in the top 5. j.t finished 11..

anyone who thinks 5 or 10 hp are what make a bike fast either dont know a thing about SPORTBIKES, have never actuallr "ridden" one. if you use 1/4 mile ets to back up your opinion or reason for buying one bike over another i am ashamed that my interests are in the same sport.. btw. what has kawasaki done in any of the top level racing lately? the new r1 just got pole and won 1 of the 2 world superbike races this year, and moto gp? i guess the m1 has a bullshit crank and firing order .gimmick.

teammates barely in the top ten huh? do you not know who rossis teammate is and that he finished 4th and if i remember correcly colin edwards was also inside the top ten at 7 and james toseland in his rookie season finished 11. thats all four yamaha gp riders . looks to me like they all almost finished inside the top ten on the crappy yamaha that happened to sweep the podium twice last year. did rossi take all three positions himself..

When I see posts from wangers that say that 150 rwhp isn't enough for them and they are going to buy something else with better numbers (adamus995)....It always makes me wonder how well they ride. Are there really that many guys that can utilize a bike like this to it's fullest??? Same goes for the guys spending $1,500 or more on a aftermarket exhaust system just to squeeze another 6-8hp out of a bike with 150...Posers, the lot of ya!!!!

You know, how an engine makes its power does affect the dyno results. You may not believe this but I have seen engines that accelerate seconds faster through a gear but turn out lower numbers.

The 09 r1 has less than 04-06 model (not mentioning the competition like gsxr and zx10). This whole fireing interval is one big stupid commercial slogan. If I want a bike which has a low power and sound different I would definietely choose a V-Twin over this shit

Jeez you sound like a noob... HP is ONE piece of information when considering the whole picture of a motorcycle. If HP was the only thing that people wanted we'd all be riding a Boss Hoss. I advise you to stop comparing numbers and reading crap on-line and swing a leg over and experience it yourself. THEN you might be able to make a useful contribution in critiquing a bike.

you are right, when I first saw this bike I was all about it, oh yeah 09 r1, then I started to compare the numbers and I got a 09 zx10. Fireing interval cant beat the fastest production bike ever can it? The answer is no if you are still thinking about it. A side note, the 09 r1 is still an awesome bike and it sounds amazing, but I decided to go with more power than sound or low end torque, if I need torque I will just ride where I have it, no use in riding in 3 and 4k r's, wind it out.

It sounds like a 1,000cc sport twin that can rev to 14,000 rpm.
This is the best development to hit the Japanese liter bikes since, well, the original R1 in 1998.
