I think it would be handy to note that when smithing your xp is based on the bar, not the item. e.g.

plate legs = 3 bars = 225 smithing xp

that means that runite is 75 xp per bar.

that means that 1k bars making plates would give the same xp as using 1k bars for a hatchet.

yeah i smelted like 7k gold ores from 66-70, and now im just super heating addy ores and coal, maybe get a few levels up in that, then probobly just start smithing mithril for a bit. add me on runescape =p... User is - Blinksoad

Ok well any tips for smithing addy? because i just got to level 70 smith and have over 500 addy ores plus 200 bars, but i think i'm gonna smith mithril until i can smith better addy stuff... Any advice?

@blinksoad Well if money isn't an issue, either adamant arrow tips or bolts to 88, then adamant platebodies. If money is an issue then I'd probably suggest super heating gold ores with goldsmith gauntlets, which is also good magic xp. You could also try superheating other ores; you'll get less xp but may make profit, or try the Blast Furnace minigame; I've not played it before but I heard it's good.

why not make better stuff then legs 4 more money? Kiteshields are good too.

@blinksoad I mentioned in the description a lose of around 6-7 gp per xp, you don't make money smithing any rune items. Rune kiteshields are almost always about 3 times more expensive to smith (about 20+ gp/xp). Only rune platelegs and rune 2h swords are worth smithing depending on which is cheaper.

@MrRunemadness No, about 6-7 gp is lost per xp and half that with scared clay hammers. It's just a lot cheaper than adamant platebodies but the xp rate per hour is almost the same. You can also do rune 2h swords, depending on the prices.
