Wow, I love his restraint of the pedal. I have the Artur Schnabel edition of the Beethoven sonatas, and Schnabel usually throws in a few pedal markings here and there...but this one he hardly put anything there, which surprised me.
I find this movement eludes most great pianists, and this is no exception; Schnabel was one of the greatest musicians and pianists who ever lived and he made many great recordings; Backhaus' first recording is the only one to get this movement exactly "right" IMO.
