@KameronID Nah, true jazz fans will always find the good stuff. I still pull out Vince Garauldi, and Dave Brubeck. Thank God for my Dad raising me to love this music.
Doc's sound and styling made him one of the ten top trumpet players in the World in the 20th Century. What clarity and smoothness he has in his upper range around the four minute mark. It sounds effortless. I got to know Doc when I was a guest on the Show back in 1979. He is very humble and told me that trumpet playing was the only thing that he was good at. The video is up on my Channel. Watch me blow air into his hands and make a musical "toot" come out!
A great band lead by a fantastic trumpeter. I had the pleasure of seeing him live several times and even now he still plays a sweet horn. The Tonight Show was enjoyable even when it would bomb on a particular evening because Carson was clever enough to pull it out. All late night pales in comparison today just like most things unfortunately.
That is still unbelievable! Doc Serverinsen is still missed. He was one of the last Master practitioner of the Great American Songbook. Most styles are copied but classic greats such as Stardust has it's own unique blend. The Tonight Show band was by far one of the greatest collections of musicians that could bring magic to the American Sound.
Classic Big Band. So many great musicians. Sadly many of them are gone but our band is playing this chart. Our lead trumpet does a pretty good job with the chart but as he said there's only one Doc. The last note is a nice F above High C!
Classic Big Band. So many great musicians. Sadly many of them are gone but our band is playing this chart. Our lead trumpet does a pretty good job with the chart but as he said there's only one Doc.
Doc didn't seem to trust his third valve during this song. Notice how often he pays special attention to it, making sure it was going to perform like it should when he needed it. Was this a Getzen trumpet? Getzen is world-famous for having the best valves in the world.
plasslett, you are dead on correct! Johnny was a class act, then the band had Doc, Snooky, Ed Shaugnessy, a wild sax section, Tommy Newsome writing arrangements . . . . I do not understand why letterman and leno NEVER let their bands have a number. When Doc and Snooky get done playing "Flying Home," all I could think to say was "That's how its done!."
This sound is big enough to fill the universe. Doc and the band can only be envied. More talent there than I can even imagine. Listening to him makes me love the trumpet and I play woodwinds.
Wow !!Network television pay attention. Allowing great talent on TV and paying them for it,creates programs such as this. Successful for many many years and never running dry on quality or talent. Compared with reality TV and Americas Got Talent.

When I first heard this arrangement on CD I couldnt stop playing it. Now to see it performed by the Band and Doc even if its on You tube what a pleasure. I wish I could turn back the clock 20 or more years and see Johnny Doc and Ed every night. How I miss them all.
@Iloveswing100 Man, you and me both:). Not sure if it's generally recognized how much Johnny LOVED music, from jazz to classical and back again. Besides this tremendous band, he often featured jazz artists (I remember seeing Dizzy Gillespie and Buddy Rich, among many others) and opera singers. Don't know because I rarely watch them, but has Leno or O'Brien ever done either?
Every time I watch this video, it reminds me how much I miss Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. What an treasure. And Doc and the band were fantastic. I long for those days again.

Someone asked who else is a great trumpet player. Maynard Ferguson and Clark Terry come to mind. I remember when Ferguson played with Stan Kenton Band before he formed his own band. We would go to dances and stand around listening to those great high notes of his. WOW!
i am an ex-muscian - t-bone in h.s., college and community band - and it doesn't get any better than this. sends chills down my spine. it's so much better than that silly excuse for a band jay leno had it's pitiful. this band cut two grammy-winning albums and actually went on the road. i wonder if kevin's band fizzled out as soon as leno's gig ended. probably.
doc's band was a class act. i have both albums and they are still available on dvd. thank you, tonight show band.
BTW, can anybody tell me if that is Al Klink playing tenor sax. A good look is at 4:00. He played for Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Sauter Finegan. I knew he played for the Tonight Show forever, but since this stuff isnt on DVD....Thanks for posting this. Really...their performances need to be out on DVD.
According to the back of the album cover from which this song was recorded, it is not Al Klink. The sax players are Tommy Newsom, Bill Perkins, John Bambridge, Pete Christlieb, Ernie Watts, and Don Ashworth with Christlieb and Watts playing the tenor sax.
Oh, yes, I know he's not on the album; thanks though! I was just wondering if that was indeed him in this clip. Maybe somebody out there can identify him? Ol' Al played in the TSB going back to the Skitch Henderson days in NY.
Grew up watching Mr. Carson (had to sneak to watch it since it was on around 11:30 pm) and seeing Doc and the guys is what led me to take up saxophone and play jazz. I wonder how many others out there did the same. What a great show. Doubt it'll ever be duplicated.
Me too, dartagnan926! I am 39 now. I remember having a new stereo TV in 1986, and at that time, the only thing broadcast in stereo was the Tonight Show. Man, when Ed kicked in those two notes, our stereo TV would kick in too. I literally grew up anticipating to see Doc and the guys.
wow I remember after working comming home late kicking my shoes off and turning on the tonight show to see this when it was new!!! when late night had something to offer!!! diffrent time diffrent world to. glad to be a part of it!!!!
In the history of The Tonight Show there has never been and probably will never be a band to beat Doc and the guys. Not only is Doc, who was rated as the best in the world, but the band is full of some of the greatest jazz players today. Thanks for this great rendition of an old classic tune that will never die.
If you have a trumpet or another instrument, you can play the same notes (in a lower octive) and realize that the last three notes he hits are D, D#, and E as the last note, which is open, thus freeing his right hand.
A couple of weeks ago I videotaped a show that he did with his new Mexican based band in San Miguel de Allende. He is on tour with them now. 81 years old and he has still got it. He also designs and manufactures his own line of trumpets.
Jay Leno with Kevin Eubanks band does not do "The Tonight Show" any justice. Nothing can come closer to this era or entertainment for late night talk shows. Thanks for posting.
Kevin Eubanks Tonight Show Band are a joke when compared to these guys. Kevin's band is so lackluster they've never been featured playing anything except Jay's theme song(which is kind of comical and not serious) and in b/t commericials. Evidently NBC has been trying to pay for its sins for having an all-White band(save for Snooky Young). It's ironic that this half-Black band plays to an almost solid White audience. Kevin also makes for a poor Ed McMahon substitute in the laugh department.
I'm lucky enough to have seen Doc live several times since the early 80s and quite frequently in the 2000s as he guest conducts the Minneapolis Orchestra -- as Johnny said in this clip: It don't get no better! By the way, for all you trumpet freaks out there constantly trying new horns, Doc was playing a standard stock model Getzen Eterna, which he used for decades. It's the player, not the horn.
Truly a master at his craft. Doc is so good at just knowing when to put vibrato and when not to...for him its obvious that his trumpet is a part of him and not just and instrument. he doesn't play but sings. I'm 15 and a trumpet player and i can even tell that we've lost the pure class and finesse that people like Doc had back in the day. i just hope somebody can come back soon and raise the bar and then keep raising, just like Docs benn doing for more than 50 years. Two words beautiful and wow!
Hey Man... It's great to read stuff like that coming from a fifteen year old, I'm 18 and love my horn, Theres a lot of trumpeters in our generation who try and bypass history.
Looking at your favourites, you've got the Louis Armstrong,
You've got guys like Doc, Basically you're learning the history of this wonderful instrument as well as learning to play the horn. Good on you man... Keep it up.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand ......., x
!!WOW!!A true master of his craft and skill. The standards of todays music have hit the bottom but at least we'll have goo ol' Doc to make it classy again....its amazing how calm he is throughout all of this.
Doc may not be taken seriously by jazz purists, but the evidence is here. No one, not Wynton, Arturo, just name any other, can make the horn sing like him. The trumpet should imitate the human voice and pour out flowing phrasing. The others run scales. Doc had control, taste and tone. He was a class act and a phenomenal talent. Notice how relaxed he is just before the stratospheric burst at 3:50, conducting. Arturo panics and squeezes thin just before a bird note. Not Doc.
Performances like this one remind us of just how horrible TV has become. Yeah, I want to go out and drop two grand on hi-def and another $70 every month for digital cable, so I can watch a bunch of ho's on crappy exercise equipment. I guess we just didn't know what we were missing in the old days with our junk TV's... and real talent.
What a great arrangement. Doc and the band were superb. How sad that the quality of the Tonight show music has diminished so dramatically. Now they're nothing more then an over sized garage band. It's even worse over at CBS with the Letterman show.
I LOVE this arrangement! I'm doing this in my Jazz Band. I'm playing the Basstrombone for this and it's rockin'! Anything that can make the saxes jump from the sheer buralness of a pedal Bb is the best!
Our Big Band in Michigan is working up this chart and I get to plat Ernie Tack's Bass Trombone part. What a fun and cool Bass Bone part it is under Doc's solo. Doc is an all-around talented band leader. Big Bands forever
Yeah, my jazz band is doing this chart too. I'm actually in the same band as Kim4Kitten's brother. It's an amazing song, I love it. Thanks for putting this clip up!
Some mighty fine trumpet playing be Doc. One thing about Doc is that he never took risks to comprimise that beautiful velvety sound of his, Bravo. BTW Stardust has to be the greatest all time song from " The Great American Songbook"
Fabulous vid!!! Doc is mega! Some of the high-brows like to look down on him, but his chops would put him on the stage to play anywhere with anyone. What a classy guy he is.
No, I don't think that there ever was a finer trumpet player than Doc. What a great jazz soloist, lead player, and classical musician too! Outstanding musicianship all around, and a great band leader as well. I've been fortunate enough to play some concerts with Doc myself, and I learned more from this about music and trumpet playing than from all of my other musical experiences combined! And, he's such a nice guy too. I love the man and I owe a lot to him for his positive influence on me.
Bob..you are so right. This is just an outstanding clip of Doc and the band. As much as I luv MF, this is very special to me. And now too, with people like Conte, John Audino, Ross Tompkins, Tommy N., and Johnny Carson gone, there will never be anything like this on TV again. Just a truly beautiful interpretation.. Wonderful.
All of those names you mentioned (Tonight Show Band members and Carson's) really brought back some great memories for me. It was one of the most incredible assemblies of musicians ever, and will almost certainly never ever be equalled again.
Carson's last statement sums it up... "It don't get no better than that."

Keep it up.

Great comments! Good for you - I'm encouraged that young people see true talent...I'm 41 and have been following Doc since the 80s.

I was thinking Harry James also on this. Ray Anthony came to mind also. Just beautiful, I wish they had featured the band more.

Not Doc.

Love this arrangement of this tune. Doc's great. If I tried to play this on my trumpet, I'd probably pass out.

Man, so sweet. Doc knows how to use just the right amount of vibrato.
