great old wrestlig days..,sting at his prime.,at the hitman hart as well.,., now what do we have???cena.,.,.,sheamus.,.,nor even orton is as good as these guys were.,..,the day hbk left the industry ..,wrestling died along.,.,all we have left is undertaker.,.but wait..,he wrestles one match per year.,.,..,
I heard plan was for a fast count, but Hogan razzed up Nick Patrick and Eric Bischoff not to do it. Later Bischoff said he was pissed because Sting, who was competing in his first match in a year and a half, was out of shape and said at the time he allowed Patrick to go along with the normal count and not the original fast count. Way to screw up 15 months of building Sting's new character and a plot line that was on top of the wrestling world.
This is were WCW first dropped the ball on this botched ending crap. It's all b/c Hogan didn't want to do business. It's like what the hell's going on.
This match here between Hogan and Sting at Starrcade 1997 was the absolute greatest match in the history of the universe. All over the universe this match is eternal.
As odd as this may seem to hear, I think wrestling would benefit if WWE and TNA just went back to something more simple. And that sounds so vague but maybe I don't know how to really describe it. Make title reigns longer, stop with all these gimmick matches! Go back to the way things were.
sting beats hogan clean, huge celebration, nwo comes in to beat down on the tired sting and some of his wcw friends, hogan has a change of heart (like he did with the rock years later) and helps sting and wcw, hogan redeems himself and shakes sting's hand, the end. the epic nwo storyline ends there. as much as i love the wolfpac, nwo should have ended here. on side note, machoman never should have joined nwo and should have stuck with the wcw or atleast had machoman in nwo as a spy for sting.
@ArmandtheWise I agree 100 percent.. I've said along the same lines for years.
But it shows you the lack of creative in WCW.. Vince and WWF would have done alot better with the story lines.. (well you got the screwed up invasion) lol..
But Vince could have done a better Job.
It was just Hogan Pulling his creative String!! But you got to say one thing, this was th be greatest build up to a match in history.. A year straight buildup. they need to do this now. But Cean and Rocks buildup suck
@1981mmichael I believe the main difference between WCW and WWF (I am a WCW guy) is that WWF was more character driven in the sense of comic book type, and WCW led with personalities in the sense that the Ric Flair you saw on screen was the one you saw in the street, same with Arn, Funk, Benoit.
@freddy333ful That was one of the differences between the two. However, I think the biggest difference was that WCW was WCW's storylines advanced more through the wrestling and WWE's advanced more through interviews and back stage promos.
The nwo should have ended here. Sting the hero beats hogan the enemy and that should have been it. I still don't get why Brett heart was involved. Stinger should have death locked him. And ended the match legally with no controversy
@mrbonesmcgee Yes, this would have probably been the best place to end the nWo storyline. Sting beat Hogan by submission and Hogan didn't have the title anymore. From here on out, they should have either disbanded, or have everyone start drifting away into their own storylines.
fuck why couldn't Hogan just swallow his ego for once and have Sting beat him cleanly without dispute, the whole year of build up to this point was excellent and it was almost ruined here because of Holloywood 'politics' Hogan and Bischoff, this and what followed after Starrcade was a poor way to end a great storyline
I'm not sure I buy the fast count idea anyway, if it was truly meant to be a fast count why didn't Sting try to kick out? He just laid there and seemingly didn't even attempt a kick out after the count. If I'm being cynical I'd say the referee was meant to do a normal count (but call it a fast count) and Sting was meant to not kick out, thus making Sting's claim to victory even more disputable.
Just another political ploy by Hogan and Bischoff. Up to this day, those two will downplay this event as a factor that caused WCW to implode. Hogan couldn't have it his way in WWF/E, so he took full advantage of the opportunity in WCW. Ah, well, in the end, that's pretty much all WCW amounted to, another addition to the WWE Home Videos Library.
my friend ordered this PPV for her birthday party and when we all saw this, we were pissed beyond all reason. The next night, i started watching raw. Worst ending ever. (insert Cornette Face here)
You have the biggest angle in the history of wrestling. The best storyline of the monday night wars. you build it up for over a year. And then you fuck it up.
@AJ36sXe i dont know about fully putting them down (wwe had austin and tyson in 1998 after all) but they couldve at least held their own. all they needed to do in this first instance was to put sting over clean like they did with luger on that episode of nitro.
WWE "sells' the rights to WCW and starts another show (but in reality WWE still owns it and just gets money from 2/3 shows or really sales it - don't matter to me) ... fans win
Bret Hart talks about the end of this match in his book "Hitman." The way I understood it, there *WAS* supposed to be a fast count....but Nick Patrick screwed up and did a normal count, but Bret continued as if there had been the fast count, slugged Patrick, and assumed the duty of referee.
Horrible ending. Complete cluster fuck. I dont know who is to blame whether its Hogans backstage politics or horrible booking. For one, it wasnt a fast count and the whole thing looked like a play on the montreal screwjob. Second, why would Bret Hart be an official yet wasnt involved at all until the end of the match? The biggest match at the biggest PPV of the year and wcw makes the ending a horrible confusing cluster fuck.
@AME Wrestling and all u other douches who say there was no fast count lol 6:36 ref neil patrick starts the count, now tell me how in gods name is it possible for someone to get a 1-2-3 victory in 2 seconds?!?! lol stop hatin on Stinger and The Hitman, he made a good call and The Icon WON the match
That wasn't a fast three count. And why didn't they just make Bret the guest referee in the first place and make it seem like he was either gonna screw Hogan or Sting?
This would've meant so much more if they didn't do the stupid Luger/Hogan switches back in the summer. The whole premise behind the angle was that Sting was WCW's last hope to get rid of Hogan & the nWo. Of course with Hogan's BS that was never going to happen, as the nWo & Hogan were both around til almost the end of the company. This should've been the end of the nWo storyline. Sting should've dominated Hogan. Badly booked match and subsequently the whole storyline was botched as well.
@edgeblade35069 Disagree completely. They handled the nWo storyline pretty well until 1999. The only thing they should've done here was have Sting win outright with no controversial finish.
@edgeblade35069 yeah they should have made the nwo completely unstoppable until this paperview. luger already beat hogan twice. once with the giant at bash at the beach and than on nitro for the title. roddy piper also beat hogan on a few occassions as well. hogan should have remained undefeated until sting beat him here.
Hogan wont be able to do half things he did 1997, so what yaa gonna do Hulkmania at Bound For Glory 2011 when you are facing Sting The Match is gonna suck thats for sure......
I said this once and Ill say it for the rest of my life...one of the worst ending ever. I love sting and marked out bigtime on that night BUT watching it as an adult its the worst ending ever in terms of no fast 3 count..you cant hear what bret says (though i know what he said)...and then hogan never gave up.
This has been flagged as spam show
Every time I watch this my mind screams, "What the fuck?!" What a fucked up ending.
06:36-06:38~Hogan pins Sting cleanly after the legdrop.
(I know about the botched "fast count")
So, Bret Hart coming down & all looks like WCW (the faces) screwed over the NWO(the heels). It's shit like this that lead to WCW's downfall.
