I saw one today while Kayaking between La Jolla Shores and the Cove. I couldn't believe it b/c they are exceptionally rare. A local kayak guide told me they've seen three lately.
I took some video of a sea turtle in front of the Marine Room in La Jolla... where the leopard sharks come every summer. Looks like a different species than this one... cool stuff!
Wow! I was snorkeling at LJ Shores yesterday and overheard someone on the beach say that he'd seen a sea turtle. I thought he must have been crazy, but I guess not! It was low tide and little swell, just like you said. Now I'm gonna have to go back and look for him!
Good video. I was wondering if this little guy survived a shark attack or if he was ran over by a boat a little time back because you can see the scar on his shell. Glad you got to have this experience. We see Green turtles all the time where I live but it always is a beautiful time to see them.
I was out snorkeling at La Jolla Shores to see the leopard sharks yesterday and I saw one of these turtles swimming along. I followed him a while and touched his back... it was cool... and with fins I'm faster than them, so I could follow him as long as I wanted. Didn't know these were around there.
touching a sea turtle's back is a $100,000 fine. Their shells are extremely absorbant and th eoils from humans cause infections so it's proably dead now. But as long as you had a good time that's all that matters.
While I applaud your efforts to protect these wonderful animals, your comments are not quit accurate. While it is illegal to harass sea turtles, the fine is only $500. Don't get me wrong it should be $100,000. And while it is not good to touch turtles or any wild animal it will not die from a simple touch; don't worry ghuegel you are not a turtle killer! That being said showing all marine life respect while enjoying them in their natural environment is always the best practice.
I wasn't trying to hurt him, and a little touch won't do any harm. I love these animals, and hope others can appreciate this wonderful wildlife around us.
great shots. How large was this guy? When i worked for one of the la jolla kayak tours i saw a few last summer in the waters. I now live in Hawaii and see them daily. It's still a pretty amazing sight each time though.
Cool! Nice that you got to see one here. Does this mean that the waters are getting warmer and more suitable for them? hmmmm. It would be even more cool if some breeding colonies were to get established. Probably not likely though. Thanks for the show! :D
Woah dude awesome! My buddy and I were just talking about how rare those are in La Jolla. We will go check out that spot tomorrow :) When did you go by the way? How was the tide?
you lived my dream.

You want to go at low tide and very little swell. I have seen this turtle four or five times now this summer alone. Good luck, I hope you find him :)
