Search for "Japanese Grammar Guide | Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese", that's the best guide I've ever seen for the language and it doesn't leave out anything - writing system, fundamental grammar basics, abbreviations, slang - everything is there.

It even gives you a natural, casual feel for the language.

Yeah, it has been a great help for me, and very well explains how things work.

Make sure you learn the writing systems Hiragana and Katakana before doing anything else though, and read the first sections thoroughly - they tell you how to learn and understand the Kanji (meaning-bearing characters) used in the grammar guide itself.

I recommend you to glance through the Basic Grammar so you get an overview first, then use the guide whenever you need to.
