Checked this spot out with my dad who used to surf it in the early days. When he saw all the boogie boards in the lineup, he couldn't be bothered even going out.

It was their sacred place. If you dared to disrespect them you were lucky to leave with your teeth. Seems they let anyone ride it nowadays. I preferred it back then.

Hey Zues, popping up to your feet doesn't take that long to master...took me two sessions....by the fourth I was bottom turning and doing small turns. But I already had prior wave knowledge and in a month I was snapping, hitting the lip, etc.Then I realized I was following a pattern that tools follow and stuck to what I liked best. @SouthjettyBill Bill, I don't know how else to explain it. It's like the process of evolution. Some enterprising fish crawled out of the primeval ooze on it's belly. It's descendants developed rudimentary limbs and learned to crawl the descendants of that creature developed stronger limbs and learned to walk on all fours.....so on and so forth until we have man with specialised limbs who learned to walk upright freeing his hands up to create. Hey Zues, popping up to your feet doesn't take that long to master...took me two sessions....by the fourth I was bottom turning and doing small turns. But I already had prior wave knowledge and in a month I was snapping, hitting the lip, etc.Then I realized I was following a pattern that tools follow and stuck to what I liked best. Having a hard board doen't make the you/ocean tougher

@SouthjettyBill Bill, I don't know how else to explain it. It's like the process of evolution. Some enterprising fish crawled out of the primeval ooze on it's belly. It's descendants developed rudimentary limbs and learned to crawl the descendants of that creature developed stronger limbs and learned to walk on all fours.....so on and so forth until we have man with specialised limbs who learned to walk upright freeing his hands up to create. Boogie boarders are simply less evolved.

I'll say it for the last time. It is all about wave/ocean knowledge, timing, weight placement and some guts. People stand on sponges and do it all. Are they evolved ? Area code meant fucking that you base your identity on your hometown. And your explination doesn't answer what special skills surfers have.

I've lived all over the world dude my home town is wherever my wife and I are living and loving at the time. As with my boards my home is something that I make not the other way around. No I don't just surf in summer I have been surfing all year round since before leashes, wetsuits and yes even before Tom Morey invented boogie boards.

@SouthjettyBill As a Sponger your Centre Of Gravity is so low you simply can't fall off. Put in its most elemental terms that means that it is MUCH easier to ride a belly board. No matter how you phrase your argument or attack me on a personal level, you know I am right. None of the little pirouette 360 turns and barrel rolls you do will ever compare to the gravity defying skill of an inverted backhand hack while standing up. It's physics man! You can't argue with physics.

@steev3d Um gravity exists whether you are on a hardboard or a sponge.A backhand hack isn't too difficult. I used to do them. Actually I don't do the whole weak ass spin and el floppo shit. I'm a fucking original...march to the beat of my own drummer. Surfer Mag did a thing with pro surfer Peter King and a pro boogie....comparing the two. King couldn't even do a hand drag spinner....pro boogie even landed an air on the "real " board. King made Oklahoma tourists look good. Wow he couldn't sponge

@SouthjettyBill Of course Gravity exists but the Centre of gravity being so low when lying down means it is much much easier to sponge than surf. I can't speak for Peter King or your nameless Pro Sponger or anything that they may or may not have done. I can only presume that the pro sponger had previous stand board experience and that King had zero sponging experience but as I haven't read the article or know anything of the background of either of your claimed participants I cant comment.

@steev3d Pro boogie was Ross Mcbride and there isn't anything to comment about. It is what it is. I know people who sucked at sponging. God awful, but they're good surfers. The rush ? You get a better sense of speed with your head closer to the water....and really your brain is just a few feet higher in the air on a surfboard...wow what a thrilling difference. Anyway you came on here saying that anybody can sponge...well I'm waiting. You haven't ridden both boards so you know not what you speak

@steev3d Let's just end this by you submitting a video of you doing ANY of this stuff in this Blackrock sponge vid....I'll give you three months.....Put up or shut up.....In the past ten years two editors of the major U.S. surf mags have been injured and reduced to sponging...both wrote pieces about it...You could tell that both of them were stoked on the sponge but and I quote, "wanted to get back in the band." It all boiled down to image and being part of the "in" crowd.

The Kuhio beach groin, known locally as “The Wall” became the epicenter of the paipo scene. STANDING on a paipo was the considered the ultimate at the Wall. They knew it then and the same remains true to this day ....
