The eye represents the window to your soul, to your pure consciousness. It is only with death, or tumbling down the rabbit hole, can one's consciousness escape the stranglehold of the human mind and be what it truly is. And only when you are calm and content and transparent as a skeleton can this be allowed to happen before death. Death is the ultimate reality, but until then, follow the rabbit, it is trying to wake you up.
This movie was so puzzling to me that I had to read about it to understand it. I guess the movie does not stand alone but requires dialog with others which is sort of neat.
@Xnitrox535 This idea might be out there, but its the best explaination i have. its the people in the other universe celebrating donnie bringing the plain part back to their universe, saving his universe from ending and possibly theirs as well. Seems kind of out there i know but that makes scence to me.
@sushiboi66 because you didnt get it!!!! it never should be the end of the world for everyone...it was only the end of the world for donnie darko because girl he loved died this night thats why the world ended for him...
Huh. I'm glad this wasn't in the original. The graphics on the extra sections really don't seem to flow with the mood of the rest of the film. But I do like the whole idea that some of the memories from the first timeline can be continued, seeing as this was barely even suggested in the original (the only real clue being gretchen waving). Was Maggie's super grotesque greif in the original though? I don't remember it being so full on... I think I liked it though.
@koalashooter1 i agree with you, but i think that gretchen was simply lying to the neighbourhood kid by saying she didnt know him, she was not in the "mad world" montage when the people were sleeping but was in the final scene talking to the little kid, this gives out a bigger image and bigger effect to us that she does remember donnie- she is more focused on donnies mom than she is talking to the boy, and when he asked her if she knew him, she paused for a while before she answered,

Oh, I totally get the ending... so like, the people you see crying remember the journey, but gretchen doesn't remember it.

@koalashooter1 Exactly, also it proves that the people you see crying remember the journey because when frank is sitting there he feels his eye.
