Oh man, your guitar playing sounds great! Good background info on the Luther Perkins method. Ive been looking for this info for a long time. You broke the lesson down nicely. Im a beginner and Im looking forward to practicing your suggestions. Thanks. Keep posting.
@PegSueee Did you completely ignore the link pasted at the top of the video that sends you to a video with less talking? What kind of a person does what you just did?
"So, with all due respect, go fuck yourself you ignorant asswipe"
"personally insult people (remind you of someone?)"
Remind YOU of someone? I see you have talent, and considering your youth, commend your taste in music. But 'go fuck yourself' is about the worst choice to silence your critics, and the best way to start a flame war. By the do-over, even You have all but admitted this wasn't your best effort, so chill out dude.

@kdx220a I'll put it this way. After about 20 or so thoughtless comments of "you suck", one tends to get a little pissed off. Seeing as the people who post comments like that are generally as stupid as the comments themselves, telling them to go fuck themselves actually silences them quite well. To deal with trolls, you must speak their language.
And yes, there's a difference between Trolls and Critics. I treat critics with respect so long as they give me it.
Obviously your starvation for attention outweighs your foolish pride, or you would have turned off the comments. You are right; no one 'made' me watch this garbage but rebutting the childish tantrum you pitched towards hockyphill was irresistible. Something nice? 158 out of 50666 like your little gimmick! Feel better now?
@kdx220a Right. Or maybe it's easier for people to ask quick questions when comments are turned on. But what would I know.
Irresistible Tantrum? Please.
When people make base comments on completely invalid points and personally insult people (remind you of someone?) I have an inclination to insult them back.
Concerning the video itself, I would first like to to see you post something better, let alone have it rated as high as this one before you start being an ass.
@lerb21: Favorited 158 times out of 50666 viewings is .003%, so maybe YOU should fuck yerself. Your problem, Mr. too sensitive is either too much caffeine, meth or energy drinks. Nervous and manic behavior is NOT conducive to teaching; you look like a douche nozzle jumping around with spiders crawling up yer butt. And if you can't take the heat-don't post
@kdx220a No one is making you watch this or post asinine comments, but there's obviously some desire within you to be a total ass wipe, which is your problem. So keep it to yourself. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all, because all you'll do is make yourself out to be a troll.
Im building a tribute Esquire to luther perkins im going with his red sunburst one i think its sweet i really dont know what kind of pick up he used so Im going with a Seymore Duncon tele pick up I love that sunburst esquire when its done il post some vids of it and thanks to lerbs lessions i can pick like luther .
Hey, just using a little bit of deducing we can figure out what pickup Luther had in his sunburst esquire. Even though it was custom built for him by Fender, they still would've adhered to the 60's pickups. So a seymour duncan Antiquity II pickup would be very close. Not that you asked specifically for help, but that's my $0.02. You could also ask the guys at the TDPRI.
+1 on the amplifier information. Don't forget the Echosonic he got from Ray Butts or the 63' Super Reverb he used.
I also have a theory that CBS Fender included different pots in the volume postion of Luther's Guitars. Not only that but I also have the suspicion that Luther started using halfwound strings in the late 60's.
WEIRDAL, I've been studying Luther's technique for over 40 years and the cadence that Luther was indeed the more syncopated style I described earlier. There was often a little slap applied, but this had nothing to do with the cadence.
If you want an example, it is defined in the performance of 'Folsum Prison Blues' on "At Folsum Prison". You'll clearly hear the 'click-clack-clicka-clack'. I know the difference between slapback and picking.
He did use sixteenth notes in his later career. "One and a Two and" was the pattern. In his early years, Luther simply plucked the notes along with the bass. At Live at Town Hall party he played the classic 8th note run.
Luther started this distinct syncopated cadence very early in his career; just listen to 'Sugartime'(released in 1961 on Sun, recorded four years earlier) and the 1959 Columbia release of "Frankie's Man Johnny" (on The Fabulous Johnny Cash, Johnny & the T2's first Columbia album).
Nice, lerb21, but what you've got is closer to Bob Wooten's style than Luther's. Wooten usually played the straight 'E-e-B-e' pattern, while Luther tended to syncopate an 'E-e-BB-E' swing. Also, Wooten applied the hand-heel mute in much the same way you're doing; Luther opened a bit more on the D string to give it an accenting resonance (Johnny preferred a strong backbeat). Finally, a lot of their difference came from Luther's use of flatwound strings, making the bass end a lot more even.
lerb21, I think fbogarin might be a little envious, so much so that he had to resort to profanity and name calling. I think your video is great. I would just like to know though if you are fretting any on EDAD? I have tried it and it just doesn't sound right. I play a Hwy 1 Tele, new one with the hot pickups, maybe that's the problem. Any help and a bunch more vids would be great.
EDAD is just the string order not the note order. Finger an 'E' chord and then play the E string followed by the D string and so on.
Guitars are not the problem when picking like Luther. One can do it on an acoustic, Les Paul, Tele, Strat, etc. If it has six strings and is tuned correctly, you can do it.
Even though most of Johnny's stuff was in 'F', Luther didn't use a capo. He would also set his tweed at the right volume so he could mute for a rhythm thing and then let go for solos and not adjust volume. He WAS a nervous guy. Living in Memphis with not much money and into a recording studio in front of Sam Phillips for his first few times, and his solos even show that!
Yup, I just use a capo so you don't have to go thought with the trouble of tuning your guitar up half a step. The original story of Luther's esquire was that was it had a broken volume, so he had to palm mute his notes when he wasn't soloing. Of course this created the sound, and when he got new, non vandalized guitars he still continued to palm mute. Indeed Luther was a nervous guy, and not the best player at the start of his career, but if you watch the video I'll be all smiles tonight, you
Really dynamic considering the combination that this fingerpicking contributed to Johnnys overall style. I don't think I'm hearing too many people mention that. This is powerful stuff. I gotta write a song with this rough tough breaking out kinda style. YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Indeed. If one listens to Johnny's early stuff without Luther, it's like Johnny lost his right arm. Luther's guitar added what two or three regular guitarists could do. There's just something about that rhythm Luther had that make the whole thing come together.
Merle Travis and Robert Johnson did the same thing. If you can sing and play it you got it made. For some reason this cadence seems to occupy a lot of space.
Didn't writ it but the info used on the Wikipedia entry about Luther came almost entirely from my research since 1988. The fellow who posted the info about Luther's life and especially his gear (a super fellow by the way who can confirm this) was given that info by me and he got it ALL right! Luther used the Butts amp (#10) for less than a year in '56. He began using Fender reverb in 1961 and on his Super Reverb until '68. I also know Luther's wife and daughter by the way.
I thank you much. It's nice to speak to someone who has indeed talked to great men such as Mr. Stuart and Mr. Wootton. My theory has indeed changed on Luther's style of picking now that I own an Esquire. This video was made pretty much to stop people from e-mailing about "How the heck do you make that sound!?! OMGZZZ..."
The Camera I use is sensitive as all hell. Check out summa the more recent vids for improved audio. Seriously, you noticed how my voice overpowered the camera?
it would be cool if luther used a gibson sg thats what i got it sounds cool just try to get one and play that song dude it would make it alot better in my openyun
Thank you for the video, I have no clue about playing a guitar, but it's interesting anyway. You do need a better microphone though, this one scratches like helll!
On the couple new videos I posted, I've been using both Spring Verb and Tape Delay. Ellum68 enlightened me. For much of the time that Luther was recording at Sun, he used an Echosonic Amp. It had Tape Delay built in it so he just used it. Later on in the early 60's Luther acquired a spring reverb unit and later just used amps that had reverb in them.
So in other words, we were both right. On the early songs (which are the most popular) you use hear slapback, but on the later and less popular stuff (and the more popular Live at Folsom Prison), its reverb.
yes he had reverb. If he didnt have reverb then why would he use amplifiers like the "Blackface super REVERB". He even used spring reverb units when his amp didnt have reverb built in. Go to luther perkins (dot) com and look at the links. Then go to "The Man behind the man in black". It lists all the guitars, amplifiers, and string types luther used over the years.
Luther also had no pedal board. Therefore this is not a true refelction of how Luther played Folsom Prison Blues. Once again I will say, Luther had no reverb or a pedal board. There was slap back.
Are you so narrow minded that you think that I'm putting compression and distortion in this, my friend? Hell no. I'm use the POD I have to model Amplifiers. The model that I used here was Blackface Deluxe Verb. And don't even try to argue with me on the subject of reverb. Luther used reverb, thats a fact. Look at Ellum's Lutherperkins, com or The man behind the man in black webpage. It lists gear.
For Christ's sake, he bought a SPRING REVERB UNIT for amplifiers. Are you in denial that Luther used reverb or something? If you are I pity you. You've heard luther use the little water dropping sound on the boom-chicka-boom picking. Sure you can use delay or slapback to do that, but its 100x easier that to crank the verb. Luther's gear was simple. He used an amp and a guitar. That amp had reverb in it, so he used it.
Thought I'd add this also. Have you listened to "Jackson" on the Live at Folsom Prison Albums? Right at the beginning of the song luther comes in a play the the same boom chicka thing I'm playing, only on a C chord. Check it out man!
wow thanx alot i had no idea it was that easy i use to just liten up on the strings and thought i had it but i guess you proved me wrong the palm mute sounds way better thanx.

You like Luther's tone? duplicating the guitar is part of the puzzle.
Flatwound strings.
The Amp is important too.
I've heard of him using several amps.
Sears Silvertone on all the Sun Records, Fender Bassman, Fender Champ and Fender Pro Amp Brown 1960(?)
If what I found was true, and you want to get as close to that Perkins sound, you might search for the Sears Silvertone.
Best of luck.

Luther used an Echo Sonic amp made by Ray Butts. Chet had one and so did Scotty Moore.
regardless of the website's information.

Yeah, my camera's mic sucks. Now I just record my voice and guitar and play it over the vid.

Luther never used a telecaster he used an Esquire.
wackbrownies240 4 years ago
I know that. I wrote the wikipedia page for god's sake. Just because I'm playing a Telecaster doesn't mean Luther played one.

thanks dude it helps

I agree with organ hero, even if he DID have reverb it sounds to much like a faint slap-back sound to be reverb, maybe BOTH..........

On the early songs (which are the most popular) you use hear slapback, but on the later and less popular stuff (and the more popular Live at Folsom Prison), its reverb.
lerb21 4 years ago
oooooh, ok I'll try that. Thanks

Luther never had reverb, he had slapback.
TheOrganHero 4 years ago
yes he had reverb. If he didnt have reverb then why would he use amplifiers like the "Blackface super REVERB". He even used spring reverb units when his amp didnt have reverb built in. Go to luther perkins (dot) com and look at the links. Then go to "The Man behind the man in black". It lists all the guitars, amplifiers, and string types luther used over the years.
lerb21 4 years ago
Luther also had no pedal board. Therefore this is not a true refelction of how Luther played Folsom Prison Blues. Once again I will say, Luther had no reverb or a pedal board. There was slap back.
TheOrganHero 4 years ago

Is that a little speed goin on there or just ADD?
hehehe. Sure seems rather tweeked out. LIke the lesson though ;)

I don't think Luther had a pedal board.
BillAqua 4 years ago
Obviously not. He had the real deal gear so it'd sound like that. I use my board to mimic the reverb and amplifier that Luther used.
lerb21 4 years ago
Also it's much easier to use a pedal board then a bunch of little pedals, trust me.

One of these days, when I get an electric, This video will be one of my first visits.

Thought I'd add this also. Have you listened to "Jackson" on the Live at Folsom Prison Albums? Right at the beginning of the song luther comes in a play the the same boom chicka thing I'm playing, only on a C chord. Check it out man!
