  • is this better than IOMEGA NAS? thanks

  • @geekyranjit thank u very much rajit:)

  • Top review!

  • Thanks for the good review!

  • Great review!

  • @alinthebest: Thanks!

  • dude, DS212J doesn't support WOL. It just spins down the drives and rest of the unit does run in full while in sleep mode. So, when you access it while in sleep mode, its already awake and just need to start spinning the HDD.

  • Nice video, just wondering can this be used to stream video's or movies to a computer when your not at home? Or would you need a dedicated server?

  • excellent review, answered all my questions. Thanks from Ireland!

  • @deasy852010: Glad that you found the video helpful, appreciate your feedback.

  • Thanks for this in-depth review. I was deciding against the Drobo with droboshare, and this. This is just in my price range and seems to do everything I'll need.

  • Where to buy Synology products in India??

  • @Golaa006: Synology products are available in India it's distributed by EBM.

    ebm.in email:info@ebm.in

  • Thank you ranjit. I do have a question though. I plan on buying a nas and the primary function will be to store all my movies and music. Then when i want to watch the movies or listen to music i would access the nas. I do not want the nas to do the trans-coding for me as my pc is more the powerful enough to play the movies. I just want a central location were me and my family can access our files off the one hardrive without using the space on our on pc. Is this the product for me?

  • @arsh231: Yes you can use it like that, in-fact I am using it just like that all the media videos / music / photo are stored on the synology unit and shared with all other computers / media devices thorough the house..... BTW it does not transcode Videos just music / photos and that can be easily disabled via settings.

  • is there a hosting performance difference between the Synology nas's?

  • What a great video! I was looking for an affordable NAS and thought that D-Link DNS-320 would be a nice option. But after some negative comments and, most importantly, after having seen this video, I decided to but the DS212j, which seems fairly superior.

  • Great video, I currently have a DS110j with 1 drive bay. I was thinking of upgrading to one of these, do you know what things are better with the DS212j aside from the 2 hard drive bays?

I was also wondering how it performed say if you were watching a video on your PS3, but wanted to upload a file to the NAS while doing that? As my current NAS stutters a little doing this, but I'm not sure if that's just a problem inherent with uploading while downloading. Thanks!

  • @Synthesthesia: With DS212J I do have problems streaming multiple video feeds and downloading stuff at the same time, I doubt even your DS1110J should have a problem with that, just make sure you are not hitting the cap of your internet bandwidth.

  • thanks, i made up my mind,,,

  • You made a great video - It's very much appreciated, Thanks!

  • Great vid and really detailed, I've been looking at getting a NAS for a while and think I'll be getting this one

  • I'd like to know about steaming videos to other PC or iPhone. Is it download the videos to PC first after watching them? Also what's format of videos are supported for iPhone platform?

    Thank you so much.

  • Your review is really help.

  • Hi.. I just subscribed to your channel. Do you know by any chance if this server (ds212j) supports 1080 HD movies to be watch on the Xbox 360 slim. Thank you very much for your help and your video.

  • @msciel22: The NAS DS212J can serve the media to any DLNA enabled client and it can handle any media file SD / 720p or 1080HD.... the actual supported media formats will depend on the DLNA client and yes xbox360 is a DLNA enabled so you can easily stream your content stored on the DS212 to your xbox..... in-fact I have a similar setup by in my case its a PS3 and WDTV.

  • @geekyranjit: I want tobuy the ds212j, what hard drive do you recommend? Also the transfer speeds are they over wifi or should your laptop be wired to the gigabit router as well.

  • @maximusutube: Almost all 3.5" standard internal HDD work but to get specific model numbers check synology website, the transfer speeds that you have seen in the video are over wired ethernet running on a gigabit network, with wireless / WiFi it works great but you will get slow speeds coz WiFi is about 10-12 times slower than the gigabit network.

  • Rajiv, After watching your videos I bought Synology DS212j Diskstation.

My only request is if you can put some videos on how to configure DDNS so that I can access my data, music, photos and videos through internet? Once we configure DDNS Service through Synology EZ-internet...do we need to configure our router with DDNS settings.........?

  • @gursikh133: Congrats on your purchase, the first thing I would do is go to control panel and use the Router Config to configure your router and then use the EZ-internet option, yes a DDNS service is recommended coz it makes its easy to access your NAS using a easy to remember name.

I am talking a off for a week or so so might build the video on this only in mid January, but if you follow the above steps it should be easy as their is a guide on synology website on how to do the same.

  • Hi. I have done so i can get accses to the NAS trough explorer in windows, but when i turn my computer of they disapear, why?

  • Hi. when i upload data to my ds212j i only get 700kb/s, but the drive is is doing something called #resynchronising" can this have something to do whit it?

  • @Itstoomany Yes let the drive volume get to normal status

  • @geekyranjit Ok thank you!

  • Looks like your router just has a 100mbps port hence u are getting just 11 MB transfer u need a gigabit based router to get those 50-55 MB/sec speed btw I used the 7200 rpm drive no raid or anything like that just configured as standalone volume

  • @geekyranjit. I am using Apple Extreme 2nd generation. It indicates Gig port. I will check again. Thank You for prompt response.

  • @MrPatiljitendra: That 11 MB/sec is the limit for a 100mbps port that is why I am sure there is some bottleneck some where in your network, BTW the computer on which you are testing is also hard-wired I hope..... coz with WiFi again the transfers will drop, I also have a test 100 Mbps WiFi router and with that I am getting the transfer in the 10.5 MB/sec range.

BTW for testing in this video I used the Netgear WNDR 3700 router which has gigabit ports and I constantly get reads in the 50's range

  • Video showed read and write speedn in 40 to 50 mb/s rate. what kind of hard drive config you used? Is it Raid 1 or 0? I currently have only 1 hard drive 7200 rpm and on gig port but I get only 11 mb/s for write.

  • Thanks for your response.

  • @Ranjit. Ok fine. Sir i need a video editing software. Which doesn't cost much.

  • @Adarsh123454321: No idea about Windows Platform coz I don't edit my videos in Windows, but I heard Sony Vegas software is good, on the Mac you can use iMovie for free its great and offers a tons of options or if you are getting a bit serious FCPX.

  • Hi. Dude can you just help me out with how to merge (overlay) two videos together in movie maker at desired position both running at the same time.

  • @Adarsh123454321: Sorry I have never used movie maker to edit videos.

  • i really like your videos and i have used your knowledge in my computing life and it is great. i was thinking if it could be nice if you started some giveaways too.keep up the good work.

  • "Please come again."

Is it wrong of me to think your accent is funny? :)

This software seems very interesting. I am thinking moving all my "7200rpm storage" to external HDD tower myself, but I really think it needs to be able to room 4x 3,5inch drives, support USB 3.0, eSATA and have proper silent cooling. Currently only found the HF2-SU3s2 coming close without looking like shit.

The NAS looks nice and I like the software, but 2xHDDs is to few.

  • @Lobos222: Thanks for your frank comments, Synology does have 4 disk bay NAS check Synology DS411+II or DS411 but not sure about USB3.0 and the good part is that all of the models use the same rob-oust software making managing the NAS a breeze.

  • Good review I will purchase one
