Mary has 'it' the x factor a certain I know not what and there is chemistry with the sisters fortune robbed or not Mary's voice was an unmistakeable sound of the sixties and seventies - I'm a Brit and there was an explosion of rock and roll soul and Motown and glam rock too but everybody knew leader of the pack and walking in the sand and we all really liked Mary I have just downloaded her album and her voice is better now and very distinctive. X
Mary has always been a perfect example of someone who has that indefinable X-Factor. I originally feared that she may lose "it" by releasing a new album and revealing so much about the mystery surrounding the history of the Shangs in promotional interviews. But, if anything, she's only reinforced the fact that she truly has that elusive "Je ne sais quoi" which so many other "artists" strive for.
Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the Shangri-Las, looked more like a 20-22 year old woman in this clip, yet she was only 14 or 15 years old in this clip.
@gemmagirlxoxo Exactly!! You and all these great people know better. It's only natural we'd want to share what has given such joy and get ticked off at the hollow crap that takes it's immortal place. We'd better teach the children well.
This has to be one of the most mis-managed groups in rock history. They scored w/ a few hits, but w/ their talent and the beautiful Weiss sisters, they should've been a super group. Oh well. Such is life.
Why is it only 3 of them are featured, not just in this clip but single sleeves and publicity photos from back then? BTW I understand one of the twins died of drug overdose in the '70's or '80's.
@38yofrmut I read that Mary's older sister (Betty) was camera shy and also didn't like touring, so Mary took over her part in the group and the twins backed her up. I think she sang on a lot of the recordings though.
dazzababes Thank-You so much for sharing these priceless footages. It seems as though through the generations there will be singer or singers that will have unique qualities. Teresa Brewer from my hometown Toledo, Ohio. The Shangri-Las, Millie Small with "My Boy Lollipop." My boyfriend at the time had a Harley. Many a time we would go to Detroit, then over to Windsor Canada to the Elmwood Casino where many singers got their start. Crushable dresses were a must for a iron horse saddlebag, lol
I remember hearing them sing on the streets in Cambria Heights , Queens, NY only 2 towns away from Jamaica where the Godfather of soul (James Brown) lived
Today's singers go around with their big ole mic , which to me is a comfort kit. If they tried to belt out a song like "Shout" with Betty Weiss and "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" leading singer Mary, their lungs would collapse. Only glad to have lived in the 50's and 60's. And to be a biker babe...That alone was a tough look. Hang Tough Mary Weiss. RIP ....M~M
has anyone noticed how similar summer days from grease is to this song? not word for word, but in style and themes, the question and answer it; "what car does he drive?" "tell me more" etc
@dazzababes Yeah, I noticed that two. I've just recently found out about this group. There are a few more of their songs that sound like they came right out of the play/movie "Grease". Obviously, there production style was an inspiration for the producers of "Grease".
Could it get any better then The Shangs in shimmy tops!! What a group! I don't understand why there is not more Shangs airplay on oldies radio! Protest! RIP Mand M
I don't think in this video they're lipsynching. The tempo on this one is much faster than when they did the same song earlier in their other performance on Shindig. & Shindig was knowng to be almost all live singing. The music was pre-recorded a day or two before the show. Goal was not to be a copy of American Bandstand where everything was fake. When the show was released on DVD this info was shared for the first time.
Shangri-Las baby. In 1964 - Mary Weiss was my first crush. I was 10 years old - Mary was 16. Should I tell you more? "Sure". Was she tall? "Well...I had to look up!" And if I were to see her in the street - my heart would take a leap and skip a beat - and I'd walk right up to her - give her a great big kiss - MWUAH! Tell her that I love her! Tell her that I care! Tell her that I'll aways be there!
Dazzababes, did you notice that under the fringed shimmy tops, they're wearing the same black leather jumpers that you see in every performance. I think it was their only costume!
I hadn't noticed, but that would make sense as the outfits are an all-in-one which they would generally wear with a white frilled-bib blouse underneath. Although, on this particular show they also performed Out In The Streets with black blouses instead of white.
Interesting way to change what appears to be their only stage costumes. Well observed!
They used to say Janis who im sure. Think she was a troubled POP star Amy has made her mark history and then some, quality they sell earing aids on ebay even in germany.
Yes, Only 5 Grammy's worth of sucks!!!!!!!They don't give them to you as "Thanks for Coming Gifts" Amy is the only one laughing here!!! Like all the way to the bank, Cd is selling over 10,000 daily! She will be among the great vocals of our time. Just as Mary Weiss was here.
I don't give a sh** what she gets. Her voice would have been average back in the 60's. Her tunes stagnate all the time they don't carry along. The way she sings is cliché wannabe "black". Busy yourself with songs of the 60's like "ain't no mountain high", "be my baby" or "Your love keeps liftin me higher"...whatever... compared to that she is a real joke! Go ahead listen to charts and be affected by awards and the musical taste of children... who cares!?
