I haven't done 5th gen rain, but in 4th gen Hydration Dewgong was my MVP. Since Vaporeon has Hydration as it's DW ability, I'd probably use one. Manectric was my obligatory Thunder-user, and my rain-dancer.

Though I dont see how Virzion is a counter to Gyrados. Virizion stab moves dont even do SE damage. If anything, Bounce Gyrados counters Virizion, lol.

I dont like to use weather teams due to them being heavily overused now, but I would say my favorite in rain would be something that would help a pokemon defensivly in rain, like Ferro or something else that would be weak to fire like another grass type. Allowing you to be able to sponge more damage.

A lot of Virizion carry HP Electric.

He's a good counter with HP Electric because he resists Gyarados's two most common moves, WAterfall and STone Edge.

True that in more complex builds, Virizion would have the better "kill" set over Gyra and would be able to counter then. Hence making Stallrein work so well: Ice Body.

Generally there is a balance in the 4 aspects. If it has a bad typing, stats, ability or the movepool simply does not flow well then the poke will make up for it elsewhere. Shedinja: Great ability, bad stats. So Ice can work, they just need coverage to make it work
