hey people, do you know what? I was trying to find some of the Scottish poets, I found one! his name is Robert Burns! I chose the first poem in the list and it's called - A Red Red Rose. I was reading that and something familiar and close was sounding, though the style of writing is old...Then I understood what was it! shiver me timbers! These guys are so freaking intelligent!
As much as I like this song, I hope they stick to doing purely instrumental on their next album. I also wish there was an instrumental version of this on the album. I need Pelican to be my relaxing band. I simply can't have that with vocals.
ive loved this song since the first time i heard it, but in the wake of isis's breakup i can see a new spin on the song itself. a band like pelican, so heavily influenced by the style of bands like isis. final breath... its like a tribute to the band you know? though i know that's not what it was intended for obviously but it seems fitting to me... 'til the seas run dry.
@FaintestFusion man that sucks just found out isis broke up, what a downer, oh well at least they left great albums behind and also pelican which is also awesome oh well...
They don't need a singer, but I must say, it did lend a special feel to this song. This definitely blew my mind. I know you won't read this, Pelican, but fantastic work, as always.
Very interesting take on the old song by the Bard of Scotland, Robert Burns. However, it's definitely for my "Miscellaneous" play list rather than "Scotland" or "Burns".
NIce Song... I was flippin' through the music channels and stumbled upon this song... it instantly caught my attention! I'm not comparing, but it reminded me, at first, of TOOL. Anyway, glad I discovered this song.
I'll never understand why people debate music. I saw a comment about Tool being pretentious and it reminded me of an interview with Maynard James Keenan regarding Tool's lyrics; he admitted that they did not actually mean anything and that he was just good at putting words together. That doesn't sound very pretentious to me. If your going to post your opinion at least have some substance behind it and explain your view. There are too many people on this site chatting through their arseholes. x
Provide a link to that interview? Somehow i find it odd that Maynard would declare his lyrics utterly meaningless.
i personally hate when people try to over analyze his lyrics, and im sure he does too, but i think he puts creative thought and poetry into his lyrics.
Kerrang - Maynard talking about his Vineyard business. He said it not me. I don't have time to go searching for a reference too it but you can always search for Kerrang interviews with him. Happy hunting. I like the lyrics, dark humour and a lot of imagery, nothing heartfelt in them so don't tell me you feel a connection with the lyrics, Tool have never really been concerned with that. Also discussed by Tool themselves that many fans would struggle to understand, the lyrics are pretty mysterious
I mean, if you had never listened to Pelican before and heard this song it'd me "meh" but being a fan of Pelican, the vocals are really haunting and much more meaningful. I mean, it's an instrumental band. You can feel the inspiration. . . . .
@cardboarddalek I agree with the "majestic" bit, DO NOT AGREE with your "bored" bit AT ALL. I'm 100% sure that before making that comment, you had barely payed attention to the LYRICS, the MELODY in the vocals and strings, the CALM and hypnotizing drum pace. What carried you over, steadily in its arms, until you reached the "majestic" part, my friend, was nothing short of a beautiful, amplified love poem.
@ghoawaynetcabo I didn't word my statement perfectly - I think I mistakenly thought they were just going to repeat the same general tune for five minutes. How wrong I was!
@MastermindRx Disagree. After hearing what Mr Allen Epley was invited to vocally add to this composition, I believe it would have been weaker without it. He has rarely ever joined them live, but when he does, he doesn't even step on stage. His decision so to interfere as less as possible with the band's live and instrumental presence. Check it out. Go to your youtube homepage and add this to the address bar: watch?v=onkH_cG49Z0&hd=1
Can't decide whether it reminds me more of an intro sequence to a Playstation 3 game about Virus-spreading Terrorist Zombie Ninjas, or the titles for Headbanger's Ball...
I dont see all the need 4 debate here, amazing song amazing vid
As 4 trying to classify pelicans music, alot people seem to like to think of them as post rock/metal. I think the best approach to this is just to take it 4 what it is and stop trying to label it. Just enjoy the music
Yay special effects! Woohoo! Give it up for special effects! Special effects in EVERYTHING!
I want EVERY piece of art and music to be filtered through the guts of a Mac: that is the future I dream of - where I can be certain that everything I see and hear, every photo, every record, every movie, every single FUCKING THING looks or sounds absolutely NOTHING like it did at the first instant it was made.
YAY! SPECIAL EFFECTS! They make everything so much more... I dunno... professional!
i'm taking this as sarcasm, and i dont agree. its called progression. sometimes our ideas are bigger than what we are capable of producing, and technology helps us elaborate on our wildest ideas, and makes them so.
If however, you're intoning that their music helps you to imagine images and that this video services that response - then I have three points for you:
i) Music is something you hear, not watch.
ii) You've watched too many music videos in your life, and now you feel forced to 'see' something when you hear music, otherwise you fear that you're not interpreting it correctly.
iii) Music videos = Universally bad. Good bands don't make videos because they are stupid.
you're right in some aspects. i mean there are certainly examples out there of over producing something. but you have never associated certain colors or images with a song? not even a "dark" sounding song? or the opposite? or a feeling? "this pink floyd song is so heavy feeling" speaking of pink floyd, their stage shows were all about the visual experience for the audience. music videos are a big waste of time and money, but so is pretty much everything else these days.
disagree..TOOL is a good band, and the do make videos.. and pretty amazing ones i dont take your explanation.. post-rock is a special genre.. almost all post rock bands use projections on their live gigs.. this should multiply your experience .. take you from simple musical to some audiovisual higher level..
I've seen many, many bands whom you'd describe as 'post rock'. None of them had visuals. Including Pelican. None.
Again - the desire to 'see' music is not a healthy attitude or indeed an appropriate response to much music. Feelings, ideas and realizations should top the listener's experiential hierarchy.
Merely having flavor-of-the-month Apple Mac-based heavy metal imagery thrust upon us is not good enough. Music should transcend such special fx nonsense.
i used the word 'post-rock' just to idetify the genre.. you can also say instrumental rock or whatever you want to call it, im not a fan of labeling music.
i had the chance to see pelican live and also to talk with them.after the show.. mm you're right, they had no visuals. BUT in this type of music emotions are the most important.. and visuals help to establist that unique moment when listening.
To understand/like tool, u must read between the lines.. thats what i like about them
Most people simply see visuals as a nice complement to the music. I think this video is great and fits the song nicely.
Oh, and Red Sparowes have visuals. I agree with you that visuals are not necessary at all, but in Red Sparowes' case, they provide a great atmosphere for their live performances.
