@BroadwayNerd4: They asked the entire original cast back for the movie? That may've been what the official press-release said--but I don't believe it. Daphne Rubin-Vega (Mimi) was devastated by her exclusion from the movie. I believe that they deliberately excluded her because they wanted someone who was younger and who was already somewhat of a movie "name."

@BroadwayNerd4: as for Fredi Walker (Joanne), I don't believe for a second that she voluntarily turned the movie down; I'm sure that she was excluded quite simply because she was fat, and Hollywood simply couldn't conceive that Maureen would leave Mark for a fat girl. Indeed other than a few Ricki Lake movies, I don't think that Hollywood accepts fat women as being sexual in any context.
