example, if I join a badminton tournament, and the best in town guy didn't because he don't want to, or he's sick, or he's injured... then I win and people say the other guy should've...
THAT HURTS!
It's like no matter what I do, I'm still rubbish.
That, is not how sport should be watch. You can't compare Michael Jordan to Kobe, you can't compare Morten Frost to Peter Gade, you can't compare Tana Umaga to Daniel Carter.
You just don't do that! That is a very bad insult to the athlete.
It's unfair that people belittling LCW just because Lin Dan is not around. It is not his fault that LD didn't join competition.
If they are to meet, who is to say which one of them would win. Ever since 2003, LD and LCW have been trading the world number 1 spot till this day, that in it self is extraordinary.
Fact: LD is a great player, arguably the best ever lived.
@AirStylesWindia PG and TH are near retirment. PG is 34. TH could have a few more yrs but he is just lazy. There is no good reason why he hasn't won anything in 5 yrs. LCW is as good as ever. LD could win a couple more world championship titles and one more Olympic title, if he wants to. Even if LD quits today, he will still go down as the best badminton player in history thus far. I am sure that there will be players better than he in the future as the game expands.
That is a given. As time goes, the technique in coaching, the nutrient inflow, as well as exposure and developed new shots will always bring badminton to another level.
people from 20 years ago wouldn't stand a chance against top sport players today. Which is why I'll never agree to Michael Jordan > Kobe Bryant, because at Kobe's time, other players have also receive better training as well as himself, thus the quality of basketball is definitely a lot higher compare to early 90's.
Michael Jordan > Kobe Bryant because the rules of basketball has changed in a way that benefits offense, meaning Kobe is playing in a time where it is easier for him to score. Despite this, Jordan's career field goal percentage (not counting his garbage washington years) is higher than 50%. Kobe's doesn't even come close.
SImilarly, I can imagine the rule change in badminton from 15 points to 21 rally points must have made a huge impact on how players approach the game.
So in other words, there are more than just new techniques and new forms of training. Other factors (such as rules change) can also affect different eras of athletes. So there's no real point in comparing athletes of different eras. Just appreciate them as we go.
In badminton, the 21 point system makes scoring so much easier (Supposedly) but is it really easier to score? Probably not. If one is to compare a 1990 badminton game vs a 2010, you'll notice the difference in Offense, Defense, tactic, coaching method etc.
Same goes for Basketball, despite the hand-checking rule. While the highlight play today (Thanks to kids growing up with street-basketball and past legend's highlights) Defense in this era is actually quite solid.
Our athletes are getting stronger, faster and smarter with each era. Thanks to modern science(Nutrition, supplements etc) and sport professors (Training equipment, technique research, sport equipment) as well as experienced past coaches(Phil Jackson, Li Yong Bo) made our sport much much better.
True, Michael Jordan in his prime may still hold on as top 10 players even in this era, but who can guarantee 20 years later?
Just like... Can Mohammad Ali really beat boxers today?
perfect example... Back in the days, 11 seconds for 100 meters sprint is considered too fast for most(Around 70~80's), then in 1990's, the standard raise to 10 flat.
Today, we have runners going even faster. 9.8 seconds can no longer guarantee you a win.
Again, science = Faster, Stronger, Smarter.
And again, I'm not saying MJ is worthless, he certainly did his part on becoming an inspirational figure as well as taking basketball to a whole new level.
actually Ive been to several yonex tournaments and I saw the top players live on court. It just seemed a little unreal the last time I watched this, because those rallies appeard much slower in other vids of this match.
Chen Hong's footwork is not as good as most other top players, neither at the time around this match, nor today. I'm not saying it's bad, but it isn't as good as other top-tier players. I'm not making this accusation from the rallies seen here, but also from other matches.
are you serious? chen hong is famous for his technical skill. even his past teammates all agree he is the most technically competent player as do most coaches in the professional circuit. if there were to be a badminton instructional video, chen hong would be the man to do it
o man first rally, lin dan raped chen hong. that was pretty sexy. chen hongs great though, i remember this match against taufik, he was on fire, sexy smashes that game.
take your taufik trash talk elsewhere. Taufik is only 2 years older than lin dan. Don't take age thing as an excuse. Taufik drink, smoke, and party alot. He's is fuking lazy of a player. Even PBSI booted him out because he skip practices. No coach want to coach him because he think he's the best and he isn't. Only Mulyo is taking up his antics. Again, taufik went downhill after 2005 world champion, and lin dan keep improving. Going downhill at age of 24-25 due to aging? LOL, give me a break
Don't fuck around. Taufik was not kicked out from PBSI he left on his own account to give other players a chance. And he only wanted Mulyo as his coach. LD improved cause of hard work just like LCW and dude, don't criticize until you are able to beat Taufik, which would be quite impossible. I bet he would thrash you.
@SportsyGuy "Don't criticize until you are able to beat Taufik" is totally stipid! I am sure that Taufik's coach cannot beat Taufik, are you saying that his coach cannot teach him anything? That's extremely poor logic.
@ShuCWong At the very least, you are nowhere near his coach level. The main point is, Taufik Hidayat left PBSI ON HIS OWN and he WANTED Mulyo as his coach.
taufik peaked in 2004-2005. Stop talking in past tense.
LCW beat LD in puny tournaments because Lin Dan let LCW win some titles. LCW was step on by LD in 08 olympic. LCW hasn't won any all england, world championship, olympic titles. LCW won mostly village titles like the malaysia opens.

It's not LCW's fault that LD is not around to kick his ass, it's not LCW's fault that LD is not there to compete for world number 1.
It is not. He earned his world number 1, LD did not join competition, he don't deserve the title world number 1.
people who fail to understand that, is the real noob.

Fact: If LCW beat LD, fans will complain that LD's prime is over, and he could've still kill LCW if he never stopped.
Fact: If LD beat LCW, people are going to say LD is the best ever and LCW is useless.
No matter what happens next, LCW cannot win against people's voices.
Best today = best today. If one guy win, he earned it. Nuff said. LD's not around? LD's own fault, not LCW's.
I love TH, PG, LCW, LD. but they're near retirement . I hope KT, WZM will fill their spot when they're gone.

I think LD doesn't let LCW win some titles, he's just less concentrated and interested by the little competitions.
And LCW is not a noob, he is actualy strong and currently N°1
