  • want safety? buy an SUV.

  • dumb lobbyism for american car producers

  • In Singapore, people who drive bigger cars drive recklessly, change lanes and pull out from minor roads carelessly. By some coincidence, bigger cars cost more, so such owners are richer, and have a superiority complex, and think that others must always give way to them, regardless of right of way. They also will intimidate the driver in front, imagine a huge SUV driving so close, you can only see the front grille, with headlights directly in your mirrors.

  • @isftish

not only in Singapore, all over the world.

Take a look at the German Autobahn :D

  • The smart car just flies away when hit, literally...scary

  • Small cars aren't unsafe, it's just to many unnecessary large vehicles on the road. Most times you see large large pickups and suv carrying one single occupant. Also this video also failed to highlight large pickup rollover rate.

  • ehm bin selber aus Frankfurt

  • I wish he would say he everyone should buy small cars instead of saying hey everyone should get a big hybrid.

  • I wasn't really paying attention to all that safety stuff, but those slow motion car crashes were f**king cool lol

  • I think I could have avoided some of my crashes in larger cars, had I been in a smaller well designed car e.g I could have braked in time, manoeuvred away from danger. It is a fact backed up by physics that larger cars are more difficult to manoeuvre and easier to dislodge (the physics the commentator was talking about), so I'd challenge this video's view that because a car is bigger it is safer. The question is; statistically do more people die in smaller cars or larger cars? Does anyone know?

  • 2:29 :D

  • We want M1 Abrams vs Smart ForTwo ... 60mph collision PLEASE!!!

  • I'll stick to my F250.

  • @KenMacMillan Or a lifted suburban :)

  • @The1500Suburban

    Or a lifted F250.

  • wow! so if we all pack half a ton of lead into our trunks everyone will be so much safer! yey!

  • @stadtpilz your car will fold in the middle 8^p....another question....why they dont criticise one honda or toyota like they talk about chinese????huhh

  • The smart car got owned @ 1:14

  • I would never buy a Yaris. Look at how weak the passenger area is!

  • wow, FAIL, lol, look at 2:27 smart car is so smart

  • wow, FAIL, lol, look at 2:27

  • wow, FAIL

  • OK smartass, now let's crash your "safe" Camry against a Sequoia and see who wins. It's all relative. Buy a safe small car. Save tons of gas. Drive defensively. ??? Profit.

  • This vid is bullshit! Saying the bigger cars get the same or more mpg! WTF

  • ow yeah amercans the insurance tells you to buy petrol guzzlers! maybe they have made an agreement with BP

    enjoy

  • lets all be honest here smarts are fucking roller skates your going to die

  • shit cars ,for shit heads.

  • Its good for you crash wall?? or... 1:12

  • @BIakDragon that isn't what i meant to say, i meant to say, use a car for what you need it, it would be ridiculous to use a smart to move bricks, but driving in a huge 4X4 for normal day shopping should be ridiculous too

  • @BIakDragon True, I live in northern Michigan, but, see people drive these things up here from Detroit, and points further.. Therefore I stand behind the push for higher rates on these little cars. Thanks for being civil sir, have a great day.

  • everyone buys a heavy car = FAIL

  • SIZE MATTERS!

  • If everyone would drive a lighter car, no crash would look like that -.-

  • AND THAT'S WHY I WOULD NEVER DRIVE A SMALL CAR!!!!!!!

  • and that's why a school bus doesn't need seat belts! :D

  • حها يا ولد

  • At 2:25 he said "you can't repeal the laws of physics". What else does this apply too?

A cue ball dropped from 1,368 feet will reach the earth in 9 to 10 seconds.

    Hhhhmmmm?

  • That's only true from this point of view, try to crash a big car into a wall... And remember, as it shows on the video, the bigger the car, bigger the forces aplied. So that's relative...

    ...or buy a tank!! hahaha

  • @spinixDH A bigger car would be safer in a crash against a wall too, the wall would suffer a larger damage but the driver would be safer a larger car usually has a larger crumple zone thus provides more safety for the driver.

But seriously it's not like walls suddenly appear out of nowhere, the driver has to be very stupid to crash against a wall...

  • @Raffix394 Yes, you're right, is more likely that another car crashes into you, instead of a wall running in the middle of a street... hehehe :)

But now seriously, i think that a much bigger car has much more inertia, so the final result will probably be the same... The crumple zone will be propotional to the weight of the vehicle.

Let's assume that the wall is a meter wide... So a bigger car or a small one have the same effect on that wall, none.

  • ok, I'm buying a mining truck... just for the safty of my family!

  • WHAT DID HE SAY AT 1:26?!?!?!?!? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO NEWTONS SECOND LAW!?

  • Don't use plastic use metal, solves the problems (maybe)

  • haha got ya.. you little stupid smart drivers... as you can see the lasd vid the smart was like a paper car and it flyed like a plane

  • @TheEvil567 i think i would feel safer riding a bike than drive a smart

  • lmfao why did toyota call that car the "yaris" when they already have a yaris in the UK the size of a smart car?

  • Lol the smart at the end looks like a cartoon. Anyways it's just amazing how the yaris pperforms differently in the two tests

  • I'm sorry the arguments are not reaching out enough. What about taking the safety cell from the Smart to the Yaris. You may make small cars safer!

  • I'll keep my 2010 Nissan Titan V8 thankyou. And for all the tree huggers that buy these impractical death traps........charge at least 75% higher insurance rates on these people for the increased hospital and funeral costs. Fact one....like it or not, the engineer in the video clarified this well.

  • @hearsedriver1968

They are not impractical for everyone. I have absolutely NO USE for a pickup truck every day. I drive from my house to my 18 wheeler and back. I am not bashing your truck, it's a great vehicle FOR YOU. Also there is more to saftey than what happens IN A CRASH. The small nimble car is more likely to avoid the situation in the first place. I see more SUV's and pickups overturned on the road than any other type. People should buy whatever it is they like and need.

  • @kens97sto171 As a crash investigator for the NTSB, I am well practiced in the forces and dynamics of a crash.

I still stand behind my professional opinion of these impractical, unsafe vehicals on the American Highways. I have travelled all over the U.S. and cannot think of one location where they are practical in regard to safety, vs efficiency. Just wait until you see what changes Obama has in store for your 18whlr and hrs of service. You are not going to like those either. Have a great day.

  • Buy german.

  • @lennardf1 what about farmers, business owners, long haul and other people that need bigger vehicles?

  • NO SHIT

  • my dream car: a 1968 plymouth roadrunner, with a 440, i wonder how badly that would do lol. go away treehuggers.

  • so what is the lesson from this: we need to buy a bigger car so we wont get killed in an accident, the other car's occupants will!

stupid host, if everybody would buy a small car there wouldnt be a problem..

  • @lennardf1 Stupid user, not everyone can get by with a small car.

  • @mattg889 mcdonalds isnt nessecary for survival...

  • @lennardf1 McDonald's is very different from a vehicle that you DO depend on for survival. One of those dinky little cars would never have kept me as warm as my Taurus did on my way to work this morning, up here in MN where it hit -40F. I do depend on my car for my survival, if you don't then you must not work for a living... or you live right across the street from work, I wish I could be so lucky.

  • if everyone would give up their guns, would you be safer from getting shot?? Criminals are like the ones with tanks and cement trucks. It wont matter if you get a small car, theres always gonna be huge trucks on the road waiting to crash into you!

  • @KripDrip You have that backwards. Over 70% of all car/truck incursions are the fault of the CAR driver. Learn how to drive and you won't die. Let Darwin apply.

  • @KripDrip You have that backwards. Over 70% of all car/truck incursions are the fault of the CAR driver. Learn how to drive and you won't die. Let Darwin apply. Only cowards and the unskilled bitch about crash safety. YOU controlling your vehicle is the solution. Operate like everyone is trying to kill you and develop the skills to survive. Just because you draw breath doesn't mean you're needed in the gene pool. Try riding a motorcycle in SoCal sometime. I've been doing it for 30 years

  • And we are trying to stop communism when we support it by buying products we expect to be good made by people being paid 1 cent a hour?

  • Back when America was good and Americans worked for money cars were great. Why? Because they were made out of AMERICAN STEEL, not that poor-grade shit from japan and china. Why was the steel better? Well first off you had the Unions, than they made their companies pay them big. And they made great steel. And what else made the cars safer? The "big ass gas guzzling V8 motor" not all this plastic crap. We need to bring back the steel industry in the US and stop using plastic in our motors!

  • A bigger car is safer than a smaller car: No really!?

  • my sister drive a 1991 caprice I am not worried

  • lololol try a bus hitting a smart.... the smart explodes and the bus doesnt moves 1 cm... lolol

  • Thank you, captain obvious!

  • what stupid tests when do you see cars clip head on off center on the public roads i have always seen cars hit smack head on i think they need to smash cars head on not off center then we will see how safe smaller cars really are

  • oh shit! i drive a yaris... lolzzz

  • @trishatragedy1 just dont crash in to anything big and you will be find(e.g camry accord and etc)

  • @graveler2golem my goodness, i hope i don't crash at all lol

  • at the end the smart car got demolished

  • "Vehicle size protects occupants in crashes." You know what is a vehicle... TAKE THE BATTLESHIP!

  • Buy a Tank.

  • @EpicButtSecks

And get free T.O.D. (Trap of Dead) for limited time*

    * See disclaimer for more detail

  • Get rid of all these huge cars, and they will be as safe as any other car. In fact, get rid of them all, and you can get 70mpg all day long like me on a motorbike. -- A motorcycle rider.

  • @Painteshed: yes Renault is safe but Mercedes, Honda and Opel are too

but they haven't as many technical Problems as Renault

  • "Vehicle size protects occupants in a crash"

    I'm buying a Suburban

  • 0:05 PUNCH BUGGIE WHITE!!!!!!!

    *punches mom*

  • At $18.000.00 CND and Mercedes having lots of problems to convince people to buy the Samart (which is NOT very smart...), why should I trust that such an expensive little car is so good for me to buy? Fishy...Fishy...

  • Just buy a Renault, all these Toyotas and American Junk, Chryslers and stuff are trash.

  • 13 people drive a 1 star rated vehicle.

  • hybrids are a joke...

  • 2:29 mercedes eats smart cars lunch

  • maybe if they used real steel in all the cars instead of spit thru tin they might all be safer!

  • People say Fieros arent safe also. In fact, the Fiero received the highest NHTSA crash test rating for a car without airbags 1984 Pontiac Fiero Driver-5* Passenger-5* Head Injury Criterion-308.6 Chest Deceleration (G)-30.9 Femur Load (lb)-840 2009 Smart Fortwo Driver-4* Passenger-5* Head injury Criterion-531 Chest Decel(g)-55 Femur Load (lb)-1282

  • Dont listen to fuckers like this. Some say suv's are unsafe others say its better. Just dont try to crash xD and get a nice car.

  • So your saying get a bigger car? WTF and you guys say SUV are unsafe

  • At like 1:43, I swear the dummy's head smashed off the hood of that camry... that's brutal.

  • at the end when that smart car crashed it got owned badly it was like fucking ping pong

  • After filming stopped Batman's Tumbler rolled onto the floor and crushed everything, including the crash test barrier...

  • if a guy on the internets says it it must be right!

  • Lmao the small car at the end

    WAKA!!

  • Save gas or save your life...tough decision...

  • @strakeinc I'll take save gas, because smaller cars have something suvs don't, Active Safety...

  • @strakeinc lol Very true. When you are sitting in your wheelchair paralysed from the neck down you will be pleased you saved a couple of dollars on your fuel/gas bill because you choose a coffin on wheels, I mean compact car. LOL

  • @matsui2001 you can go in the big car, but you can crash with a big truck, with same results...

  • @ALFTUBE50 I AGREE there is NO car you can not die in in a crash. BUT heavier cars fair better in a crash than a lighter car. That is a FACT and there are statistics to back this up. But yes there is NO car you can not die in if you have a heavy enough crash...Say with a truck for example.

Save money on your fuel bill OR save your life in very bad accident.... IT IS UP TO YOU!

  • you cant repeal laws of phisics do ppl actualy think that F=MA just desapears because a car is small ? what i mean is that to bounce off the car has to absorbe energy to bepropelled the other way thus those surveys dont seam to take into account the energy transfered to the tridion cell ( not the occupants boddy) and thus propelled in the other direction basicaly its the jump that absorbs the body not the occupants . not so in the bigger car witch only absobs energy tru crush zone

  • @dragon22873 do the research then tell me they do.

    thats a laughing matter.

  • 'honda toyota make mercedes'....this guy is on crack.

  • @navtok Well since this is his job to know this, i'd say he's right compared to yourself.

  • @navtok He meant they were testing cars from Honda, Toyota, and Daimler who makes Mercedes.

  • i want mini cooper vs hummer h3

  • What about testing a 1998-2010 New Beetle (I own a 1999 Beetle GLS 2.0) in similar head-to-head crashes?

Everybody by now knows that the New Beetle got a an overall 'good' (top) rating and was even named a "Best Pick" in the IIHS' own 40-mph offset crash test (tested in 1998), and a 4-star rating in the NHTSA's head-on front crash test and an average 4-star rating (5-stars in the front and 3-stars in the rear) in their side impact crash tests. A TANK!!! The New Beetle PWNS!!! :)

  • The smart car needs a neck belt.

  • That Smart Cars saftey cage held up a lot better then the Yaris.

  • @SteelCity1981 That is so true, and yet the media had the balls to twist that around and make it for bad publicity. It is so funny that test came out right when GM and Chrysler were getting their asses bailed out. I just love that little test, and yet this man hailed the larger car as a better buy. One of them being a "Ford"

  • I would LOVE to work at a crash test place... so darry what car will we flip, slam, crush, and destroy today?

  • @MaryVirginiaWhite

I wouldn't like to clean the mess up afterwards though.

  • smart car looks like a wild ride.

  • There aren't enough accidents like this to justify a big sled when you want a cheap nimble car. Wear belts & don't drink or text. It's an odds game. If you're a lousy driver, get a midsize car & pay the $6K for hybrid, but if you don't run into lots of obstacles or other cars, drive what you want.

Prosperity and too many actuaries made us greedy for security, fetishistic about safety, & paranoid. Live so you learn to handle risk. And throw a banana peel in front of a safety-fascist now & then.

  • @grizzlygrizzle You are right about the been a good driver part, but that dose not prevent you from been hit by a careless or drunk driver. That's why we eager to have all kind of safety device to save our ass.

  • The whole fuel economy thing didnt audi make a car that is a 1 cylinder deisel and gets 300 mi/gal while being a medium-large car???

  • Honda Fit is officially Honda Shit

  • i dont know why i love watching these..

  • @CounterCrazeBand

Because reality TV is an evil mistress.

  • not a great video

  • 1:45 how to die quickly and that isn't even at a high speed.

  • The smart car did the best however. Despite that violent rebound it didn't buckle at all!!!

  • @jp2691

Yes BUT as the narrator states, the more the frontal end to absorb the shock, the less the forces placed on the driver. The cab doesn't need to buckle the break your neck from the force of the impact! And being that the Smart has the least front then the others, its only obvious that there isn't much to absorb the impact. I went to Italy and nearly all of the vehicles were Smarts or Mopeds, so they aren't bad just dangerous here because of the size differential.

  • @jp2691

That is a COMPLETE misunderstanding. The buckling is bad, but it represents forces dispersing. Smarts violently fly away because they take almost all of the force. The smart driver would have hit his head into the steering wheel hard. It's much less likely he'd survive when compared to the much, much smarter Fit.

  • @DTownzz Actually no, he's more likely to survive. What you're missing is that fact that while the Fit was buckling the dash was being pushed into the driver. Or in other words while the smart driver would've faced possible head injury the Fit driver would've faced being pinned, or worse.

  • @Neonspinnazz30

You're wrong. The driver in the Fit is not hit by parts of the car except in accidents so severe the Smart driver would indeed be in extremely bad shape.

The buckling is designed to work around the driver, and it's designed very well. I don't think the Fit is the ideal car for safety, but it's in an entirely superior category to the smart car. That's not hyperbole, that's simply the results of testing.

  • @DTownzz Watch the longer version of this video where the IIHS Pres speaks about the cars, heck, go to their site and check the data on that crash. The video shows the Fit driver pinned under the dash and a big mark on his head from the impact. In contrast the smart driver has marks on his knees and a small mark on the head. The data shows the smart driver sustained less force than the other two, and the Pres. even says the fortwo came out better.

  • @DTownzz Another thing you're forgetting is the weight of the opposing vehicles, the other two sedans weigh just under or at 3,000lb. The C300 (hit smart) weighs just 200lb shy of a brand new Chevrolet Equinox. What does that mean? While the C300 is small it's heavy, so in theory the smart was hit by a large crossover.

  • @jp2691 Yes and the driver of the Smart car would have been able to coff up his heart. It has NO crush zone .

  • @matsui2001 If you knew anything about the smart car then I would agree with you, but you don't. It has no crush zone that is true, but what it has is a design in the cab. During a crash the cab is set towards the back and at the point of impact there are springs or crunch zones that allow the dash, seats, ect to move forward a limited distance to eliminate the forces caused from the crash. Its a alternative to the crush zone genius. People with opinions yet no knowledge should stfu

  • @jp2691 I laugh at people like you who "Believe the hype" I would have loved to have seen the figures for the G-Forces placed upon the occupants in the smart car in the crash at 01:15 in this video. A car has to have a crush zone or crumple zone to slow down the energy transfer. Otherwise it will be like jumping off a 90ft roof on to concrete. Put it this way I would rather be sitting in the bigger Mercedes ANYDAY! You simply can not defy the laws of physics HEAVIER CAR = SAFER CAR in a crash

  • @matsui2001 I would love for you to see it too cause guess what genius xD. The occupants according to the data collected from the dummies in the crash apparently would survive these violent crashes. Do your research asshole =/

  • @jp2691 I dont give a flying fuck. I would rather be sitting in the bigger Mercedes with the longer "Crush zone" to absorb all of the nasty energy. My money says you would be able to get out of the Mercedes and walk away!

WASH YOUR EARS OUT ASSHOLE and Listen to what this guy says at 02:21 until the end of the video....

I will keep my Range Rover SUV 4X4 Thank you very much .. I will have a BETTER chance in an accident against a smaller car. Save fuel OR save your life..It,s up to you!

  • @matsui2001 you could by an SUV that comes in a hybrid to save fuel and be safe, range rovers are just obscene

  • @jpmahone How are Range Rovers obscene??????

  • @matsui2001 they are gigantic and usually there is only one person driving them. I'm a valet and when I drive them I laugh at how oversized they are. Get a Honda CRV or Toyota Highlander

  • @matsui2001 So you follow everything other people say? Hell this argument is invalid cause they don't even talk about so smart. WASH YOUR EARS OUT ASSHOLE Its the Toyota Yaris they speak badly about. So talk about that peace of shit.

  • @jp2691 I drive a Range-Rover SUV 4X4. Are you TRYING to tell me I should sell it and buy a Smart car and I will be safer in a crash... HAVE YOU ESCAPED OUT OF A LUNATIC ASYLUM!!!!

I would love to see a crash test...... A Head on crash between a Range-Rover and a Smart car both doing 40 MPH. The smart car might put a dint in the bumper of the Range-Rover as it drives over the top of the Smart car... YOU SIR ARE AN IDIOT!

You must have an I.Q of about 45. You MORON!!!!

  • @matsui2001 Lmao did I prove my point yet everyone? This guys comprehension of words is like a mute person trying to speak sign language with the feet to a deaf person. Once again...I never said my point was to prove smarts are safer then larger cars retard. I am just saying they deserve a little more credit to the amount of safety they provide. Never ever ever said smarts were safer then larger vehicle, Take your suv...sell it...and buy a new brain on the black market =/

  • @jp2691 So someone with real potential can be brought back from the dead. >.>

  • @jp2691 I will keep my big safe Range Rover SUV 4X4.

If you want to drive about in a coffin on wheels just because it is good on gas .That is up to you.

Save your life OR save a couple of $ on your gas bill!

    IT IS UP TO YOU.

You keep telling yourself that the Smart car is the safest car on the road.If you tell yourself it enough times you will start to believe it is true.

I hope YOU are crippled in a crash in your coffin on wheels. You will be pleased you saved a couple of dollars on gas

  • Comment removed

  • @matsui2001 depending on the year of your car, it could be a 3 star crashtest EURO NCAP, which is not good. The engine could be pushed into the passenger cell causing feet and leg injuries.

Also it's hard to stop a 2 ton car, so you have to live with the consequences of flattening a pedestrian if you just can't stop quick enough.

  • @Paintheshed Why walk into the path of 2 Tons of steel on wheels?

Renault are indeed make very safe cars at the moment..I agree with you on that!

  • @matsui2001 Because if you bought a Smart car it would be a Contradiction. LMAO Dumbfuck

  • @jp2691 You can't cheat the physics involved. The longer the crumple zone, the longer the time to a complete stop = less G force on the people inside. The Smart car has done very well with what they have but they simply cant overcome the fact that they have very little to work with.

  • @shananagans5 100% AGREE. I am pleased there is someone on here who has a brain that works.

  • @shananagans5 I agree totally and appreciate your input. I never said the smart car was safer then a larger vehicle, but people like matsui are too dumbfounded to comprehend exactly what the words used to express my opinion really mean. My point is to express that despite the violent impact the smart holds together stupendously and believe it or not if your Chevy Suburban rolls hard landing upside down its weight will crush the roof on your head. Smart cars are way to durable for such a mishap.

  • the blue camary is dangerious

  • @mountainmachine72 Blue yaris not camry

  • good video

  • The smart FLEW!!! haha..

  • i hope they give you the cars :P

  • Маленькие менее безопасны при столкновении с более крупной машиной? Это всем известно, кэп!

  • lol @ Americans

  • "Veihcle size protects occupants in crashes"

    TAKE THE BUS!

  • @scienceandreasoniluv I would like to take the bus but they will not let me drive (its the fault of the bossy guy in the front, he just hogs the wheel) and if I don't drive they never seem to stop at my house. Also, they don't wait for me to get my groceries in.

  • @XCritonX Sounds like the busses in your town suck!

  • @scienceandreasoniluv shut the fuck you filthy hippe scum

  • @jayive34 Are you feeling OK? Sit down, take a deep breath and relax. I think you should go and seek some professional help. You have issues.
