  • i love watching that girl too.... i noticed her the first time i saw the vid.... i like how she looks at the guy with her as if shes asking him to dance. shes just adorable.

  • guys become cuter when he can play an instrument.... =D

  • A m a z i n g

  • I love how raw this song sounds in the subway. They make me feel happy inside and out : )

  • Wherever you are "Girl in red hat", I love you!

  • Oh my God, the girl all the way at 2:49 who first appears in the back right wearing a red wool hat with the biggest smile on her face. She gets me every time, especially watching her make her way over to the music and start bobbing back and forth with full-body motions to the music, still grinning ear-to-ear. She is pure joy, it makes me smile. :) I've lived in NYC all my life and never have I seen someone so unabashedly full of love

  • I can def see this song as a car commercial song!<3

  • that "ladies and gentleman" part on the loudspeaker actually sounds like part of the song!

  • THE TAMBOURINE IT STINGS MY EARS

  • @adims654 ME TOO every time it hit my ears would flinch

  • i kind of wish the free lance whales would record this song with all of them singing this song because it adds really good harmony

  • CHUCK CRISS! So freaking handsome and talented!

  • The guitarist has his capo on the end of his guitar. That's where I keep mine! :D

  • @mntwins39 and so does the rest of the world ;)

  • @theRealNBK Thanks for that.

  • @mntwins39 Your most welcome =P

  • What a bitch excuse me my ass

  • They are So Freaking Awesome!!!!!!

  • That woman needs to take her hand off the the keys.

  • Almost as cool as playing in a service elevator

  • 2:06 'EXCUSE ME... i just came'

  • wish this song had more lyrics

  • Damn the woman who was like "EXCUSE ME" and barges past the camera person...wtf everybody else seems to manage getting past without disturbing! Grrr :L

  • Am I considered a hipster if I listen to this and a lot of more indie shit hahaha cause if I am then I'm proud to be one

  • Is this how they became famous or are they just so linked to never selling out they're too amazing for real stages?

  • @TheTechnoTurtle or they just enjoy playing there

  • @NajeePharaoh Way to ruin my moment XDD

  • so amazing!

  • I love that you can hear in the background " Ladies and Gentlemen, the L Train is now arriving."

  • Notice how non of them blush or seem embarrassed at all... They just do their thing.. so amazing.

  • Freelance Whales reminds me of flowers in this and the woman at 2:06 resembles all the people swerving and flying by who just don't have "enough" time to stop and smell them in their busy life...or they simply don't care, sadly..

  • They killed it at the TLA last night. Awesome.

  • They're so great live, I had a lady boner listening to them at Terminal 5 the other day.

  • EXCELLENT.

  • this made me smile for the length of the whole video... great guys :)

  • this song would we awesome with ore lyrics

  • i love that

  • This is just badass

  • mmm... love freelance whales i use to take the "L" train to the "G" train for work to bad i missed this..

  • I would move to NYC just for this.

  • Lol!!! That blonde bitch was such a bitch. "EXCUSE ME" she better had a good excuse for ruining a good shot. Lol. And the guy who "brushed" passed the cute guy with the guitar,..

  • Is there a studio or recorded version of this song with the third verse? The one on the CD stops after "the house chants on without us."

Or is there a video I can rip the song from that has a good quality with the third verse?

  • "Excuse me!"

  • I was captivated from start to finish

  • From a subway station to a Starbucks commercial. You guys have made it. Good talent is recognized

  • Subway performers made it on a starbucks commercial. now there ya go.

  • at 1:42 the dude behind the boy in the white shirt kinda looks like beck off of victorious

  • ... Am I the only one that noticed the bitch with the blonde hair that ruined the entire video by walking smack infront of the camera? Thanks woman.

  • @120sk8rboi you're missing the very essence of Street Performances... this takes place on a real-life busy subway platform.... the woman did not "ruin" anything. if anything, she enhanced the realism by showing us that life goes on regardless of whats going on around you. love the music.

  • you notice how the chick in the train metro speakers sync in perfectly when the melody of the song changes?

  • That was awesome.

  • Dear Pink Scarf with Orange Hat:

    You are fantastic.

  • Dam that was sick wish I was there

  • 2 years from now all the fools who passed by this awesome band are going to realize that they brushed passed sheer excellence that one day on the subway and they're going to wish that they hung around awhile or called in sick to work. :)

  • What instrument is she playing?

  • @EmilayBemilayDisaray

Harmonium is what she's playing. The guy beside her is playing a glockenspiel which is similar to the xylophone, but instead of its bars being made of wood, their metal. At least 2 of the band members play the glockenspiel and it appears to be one of the bands distinct sounds.

  • @nightbirdmedia Well thank you very much. :-D

  • watching people's reactions is the best.

  • I couldn't figure out who was striking the tambourine, until I saw this video again...LOL...This IS the BEST SONG EVER!!...Starbucks has good taste =D

  • awesome song, and im also surprised how good they sound live in a subway station with people walking by them.

  • I take this train all the time. I feel like this song just goes with the feel of the station

  • EXCUSEEEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEE 2:07 lol

  • I see them April 29th! I'm counting down the days.

  • mvincentc.tumblr.com

blog dedicated to promoting good music such as the freelance whales. come here to hear about new shows, reviews, upcoming records, new releases, songs of the day, information and news about bands, etc.

some bands posted about so far:

the nodz, bright eyes, freelance whales, manchester orchestra, lcd soundsystem, crystal castles, the dodos, the strokes, and many more.

freelance whales have actually checked out my tumblr as well and we spoke about it. =] lovely people!

  • LOVE this so much.

  • It's like a hymn for the cogs that turn the great engine...the unconcious synchronicity in which we all work and live. Perfect setting to perform it. I'm gonna be whistling this song like the 8th dwarf all week.

  • @DIGBY67 I haven't been able to get it out of my head since the Starbucks commercial came on.

  • First a starbucks commercial now subway.

  • omg my subway stop :)

  • You gotta start somewhere.

  • the announcer really fits in well.

even the girl who said "excuse me" fits in.

    LOL this is lovely!!

  • @hellohome I was just thinking the "excuse me" lady was a douche, then I realized that's the whole point of performing it there, right in the middle of people who really need to stop and listen, if they did they'd realize the song is about them.

  • "excuse me!"

  • @Mastersnipe1 that guy was so rude! I wish I would have gotten off the subway to see this. What a day.

  • I like how raw this is.

  • cool song!!!

  • This song DEFINITELY deserves more recognition. The starbucks commercial hopefully does wonders, thats the reason i found out about it

  • @massacrene1 same with me :O i heard it and instantly LOVED it <3

  • Brilliant. There next gig should be on the moon.....with panda's

  • @kurt12f too bad there is no sound in space :(

  • Brilliant. The next gig should be on the moon....with panda's

  • There was a video like this posted a couple years ago, but it was only like 2min long :P

  • That blond curly haired woman was so rude people need to stop and listen how beautiful their music is....

Sometimes you just need to stop take a break and listen to some good music to make your day so much better....

  • I'd allow to make me late for work. If I heard this while walking to my train, I'd stop as long as I could.

  • hahah i love that that train came in and loads of people got off just as they were getting into it :)

  • they probably could have just turned sideways and people would have had less trouble getting through

good song though, paying to see them next month

  • I would miss my train on purpose just to listen to the rest of this song. The world moves so fast, but this proves that music has the power to make time stand still.

  • soo good!

  • i think i just saw BEN BARNES (Prince Caspian) at 1:40 to 1:43

  • When the song was over, I was going clapped as if I was there but then I noticed I was in my room. :/

  • I'd like to have that band playing at my station the morning ...

  • @DoctorBeardface hahahaha, oh god

  • Since when did Velma learn to play the organ?

  • I need to learn how to play that beautiful instrument. (I'm talking about the banjo)

  • Its to good.

    To good...

  • The girl dancing in the background. She knows what's good.

  • @razzamataz1525 she bout to drop it like it's hot

  • i think the announcements in the backround add a weirdish good tone

  • Look at these fucking hipsters.

  • why, God, was I not at Bedford L Subway Platform on March 2nd?

  • @mahonnequin Because you're gay.

    beautiful art

  • @mthrfckrx you couldnt have said it any better.

  • @mthrfckrx Shut up, u faggot.

  • i gotta get myself too new york

  • You can thank Bloomturd for this kind of attention seeking gentrifier bullshit right here in this video.

  • fantastic!

  • even though their style makes me wanna rip off my ballsac, we should have more people like these.

Rather then people stealing and flaming.

  • hippies<hipsters<people<mel gibson

  • Haha I love it when the girl in the ORANGE BEANIE starts getting into the music at 3:20 i fealt the same exact way! then i hit my elbow on my desk. :(

  • softer mallets, it's slamming whatever compressor is on the camera audio.

  • Loves it!

  • What a punk bitch @ 2:06 haha i love the subway announcments in between it actually jives well, great vid & song <3

  • Why is nobody smiling on this platform?? Reminds me of the Joshua Bell stunt in DC Metro.

  • 2:06, that bitch, you could tell shes a bitch and hates life, i would have spit on that biatch.

  • wow....this is inspiring and beautiful, not often that you find that in this kind of music.

normally this would be pretentious and boring, but this is purely genious.

    I love it :)

  • Congratulations, a very humble start, you guys are now famous!

  • doesn't get any better than Freelance Whales :)

  • I almost feel like the lady on the annoucement system should be part of the song.

It kind of fits. Weirdly enough.

  • @drdanisuess It does, doesn't it? Haha, it's compliments the song very well, giving it a beautiful urban sub-ethos. Even the abrupt "Excuse me(s)" in the songs only enhances the visual and emotional drama playing in the NY subway system. Brilliant, utter brilliance.

  • @ 2:38 - guitar wielder has some smooth moves!

  • my brain almost exploded at the level of perfect brilliance here...

  • Pure talent. i love these guys

  • @lasurubens that is my favourite comment on Youtube. just thought you should know.

  • I would move to New York just to be able to see this kind of performance. I watch this vid 5+ times a day. It's just too freakin cool.

  • @QuasiDog513 part of the reason i miss new york. gotta love the subway :-)

  • Merci de m'avoir rendu le sourire ce soir :)

  • Clever.

  • Makes me want to learn to play the banjo

  • @harrietdaspy Do it! Not a better instrument to learn how to play :)

    It changed my life.

  • @harrietdaspy I play the banjo and it really is the ~ Best. Instrument. EVER! <3

~ Sounds freaking amazing <333 it!!!!

  • #newtwitter!!!

  • love this song! check out KMK2244 for an awesome music video to it!

  • been listening to there album this whole week, when i find something good, i can spend almost a whole month listening to it!

  • forget the labels, anyone that listens to this should understand its brilliance

  • I'm amazed that there wasn't alot of traffic right through the set..........I do believe this was done most any where else things would have been different.

  • @theronandemily Depends on the time really

  • look at all those sad people... cant even stop for a minute to appreciate something beautiful.

  • sounds like a bunch of six year old were let loose on a pile of instruments

  • @tobilius is it really that hard to walk around a band on a subway platform? Is it really that much of a burden on you? I suppose it would probably take you an extra 3-5 seconds to walk around them which is time you could have spent bitching and making assumptions about something else. By the way, I find it hilarious that you are calling out hipsters yet on your last.fm music profile two of your top three bands are Mates of State and Tegan & Sara...

  • @hobbnet i mean honestly... they are taking a decent amount of space. maybe if they were more considerate of people who actually have to get somewhere they would have aligned parallel to the train not perpendicular to it ;)

  • I would loooooveeee to have that kind of expresions here in Medellín! It would be incredible! :D

  • i love how a bunch of hipsters crowd around them half way through.

  • blissful music is for ignorant people

  • Can't wait to see you guys Sunday. Hope you enjoy Buffalo, your sound is pretty rad

  • This makes me smile.

  • I love the girl in the back with the orange hat. Just how it seems like she's genuinely enjoying it. Why can't the rest of you stop complaining about hipster trash and just LISTEN TO THE DAMN MUSIC

  • Can't they be considered a safety hazard? They're blocking off the path xD

  • I would gladly pay taxes dedicated exclusively to providing this sort of music for my daily commute.

  • 最高!!

  • would have loved to have stumbled upon this!

  • good on them

  • Damn, this is so crazy! Makes me want to visit NYC right now.

  • Why is it that the worst musicians are always playing at the Bedford avenue subway stop? Oh yeah, lemming hipsters. Please leave New York, you add nothing.

  • @permanentbodyguard

. Freelance Whales are able to create creative and intuitive pieces from the oddest of arrangements of instruments which span, break, and reform many modern definitions we have of music. Their music is not only complex and redefining, but simply harmonious and entertaining all the same.

Hipsters drive me mad and, in my book at least, skinny jeans may as well be from the devil, but in all honesty you need to respect musical talent and give credit when it is due.

  • @alexcull Ok. My comment was based on this one video. But I think the song they played in this video sucked. And to me it sounded like a watered down version of quite a few the hipster bands my friends try to get me into. Maybe I would like some of their other songs, though.
