Yes, slavery was a major part of the war and yes, when you do some research, it played a huge part in winning the war for the north and not just in manpower either.
but when you get down to the bare essentials, you have to look to Massachussettes for the answer.
When states started seperating from hte union, they did so because with their states being primarily democratic and congress being primarily republican,

Not once did the South fight for slavery, even AFTER the Emancipation Proclaimation.
In fact, most of the soldiers fighting in the south didn't even have a slave. Many couldn't even afford their own shoes.
