I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but what's interesting to me about these early scenes is the mere fact that black people in France were educated, full members of society. Sometimes we assume that racisim and even slavery were just the way of the world, "back then," but it wasn't necissarily that way everywhere. That realization provides an interesting perspective on our own histtory (spreaking as an American).
I love this movie but I can't say that I agree that its accurate, no one knows the truth about what went on between Jefferson and Hemmings because we weren't there and his ideas on blacks being inferior except for manual labor, domestic work, and entertainment gives us a glimpse at how he felt about slavery.

That is probably the MOST comment that I have ever read.
If Jefferson wanted to set “free” any of the people that he held in captivity, he could have easily sent them to the north; Canada or even Europe (where many formerly enslaved people lived with no fear of harm or re-captivity).
Like Hemings, Jefferson’s offspring with Hemings LOOKED 100% WHITE & would have easily blended-in with White society.

Ok so I made it through about 12 parts of this movie and had to stop. It was just that bad. My advice to anyone about to begin watching this:
Stop what you're doing and go rent "John Adams".
You will get a fairly accurate portryal of Thomas Jefferson's actual personality (or at least what we know of it).
And, as an added bonus, you won't feel tempted to sift through ignorant comments calling the man a pedophile and losers saying they hate white people or are ashamed of their white half.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but what's interesting to me about these early scenes is the mere fact that black people in France were educated, full members of society. Sometimes we assume that racisim and even slavery were just the way of the world, "back then," but it wasn't necissarily that way everywhere. That realization provides an interesting perspective on our own histtory (spreaking as an American).

I love this movie but I can't say that I agree that its accurate, no one knows the truth about what went on between Jefferson and Hemmings because we weren't there and his ideas on blacks being inferior except for manual labor, domestic work, and entertainment gives us a glimpse at how he felt about slavery.

What's interesting about Lincoln is that (contrary to myth) he NEVER "freed" a single enslaved person.
The Emancipation "Crock-lamaton" did NOT "free" anyone & the 'Civil War' was mainly fought over the ecomomic-issue of 'Southern 'Secession' (& NOT over the moral-issue of 'Chattle-Slavery').
The ONLY reason Congress passed the 13th Amendment (which is what actually "freed" people from the Chattel-Slavery system) was to punish the South for attempting to 'Secede' from the Union

Listen -- ALL WORKING-WOMEN – REGARDLESS of if were ‘chattel-slaves’ (in the south) OR ‘indenture-servants’ (on the east coast) or factory ‘wage-slaves’ (in the north) -- HAD IT ROUGH!

Not so. DNA tests were positive PLUS timing of when Jefferson and Hemings were together coinciding with when she gave birth show that she had 6 children by Jefferson, 4 of whom survived. Even Abigail Adams, who was with Jefferson in Paris, made the connection and broke off her close relationship with him explicitly because of her disdain for a sexual relationship that was could be obviously inferred.

(This was on PBS, the History Channel, Dateline NBC, 20/20 & 60 Minutes.)

Contrary to myth -- most biracials consider the phrase "you've got the best of both worlds" (in regards to aesthetic-looks, life-experiences, etc.) to be a condescending insult (equivalent to telling a black person that they can dance well or an asian person that they are good at math).
Every mixed person's features & experiences are different.
For some people things are great -- but for others -- not so much.

Those people were 'slave captors' (not "masters") who held 'enslaved people' (not "slaves") in captivity (as chattel-property under a misogynistic system of matrilineal-based terror and exploitation).

@Bellalyze21 I think in the beginning Sally was in love. She was free when she went to Paris and I'm sure knew that by going back to America with Jefferson she was giving up her freedom to be with him.
Either she was so in love that she didn't care or He promised her she would not have to live as a slave if she came back with him or she simply did not know she was free and wasn't a slave while in Paris(which seems unlikely seeing as how she would not have been treated as one while there)

Historians have repeatedly PROVEN that neither Hemings nor her kids were ever offered freedom by Jefferson & stepping on non-U.S. soil did NOT make people being held in U.S. chattel” slavery “free”.
They were ‘legally’ viewed as the “property” & could ONLY obtain “freedom” by being “set free” with legal-documents filed in a court of law OR by “running away” & using a hidden-identity.
Running away was NOT possible for Hemings & Jefferson had no intention on setting her free.

Where are these "historians" that proved something that is pretty much unprovable? The only people who really know anything are all dead. However, Sally's children told the story of how they were the President's children long before those historians of yours changed their minds about it AND only after it was proven factual by DNA evidence.

What he did was -- simply not 'brand' any of the kids before or hunt them down like animals AFTER they ran away from him and Monticello.

According to another slaves own memoirs, he(the slave)took one of the kids to the train station on Jefferson's orders. The Hemings children were the only slaves who ever attained their freedom from Monticello. You think Jefferson didn't plan it like that? And if he did, it's believable that he promised Sally he would do it!

The only movie to get Jefferson's persona anywhere close to the image given by the accounts of his contemporaries is Stephen Dillane's portrayal in the HBO series John Adams.
Nick Nolte and Sam Neil. Good grief, where do movie makers get such ideas?
And the idea that the young girl seduced him, that's just too much.
The speculative book Diagnosing Jefferson by Norm Ledgin sort of makes sense to me.

It is a film. It is historically based upon a dark and unpleasant period of USA history.
I appreciate it because the film actually shows how far we have and have not come since this time in our history.

Well Jenifer Beals may look more white but her father is black so she would be 1/2 and 1/2 anyway what does it matter if she looked more white or not still a good actress and still a good movie and as far as white slaves are concerned they were called indentured servants not slaves , geeesh read a book and yes they were almost treated the same . The difference is they could earn their freedom based on their sentence.
